You can actually invert green channel with just one RGB curves node.

Very interesting! I have had no experience with UDIM other than to be aware they exist. Thanks for the breakdown.

I suggest to try adding udims to a model, its not difficult and opens a new world. I used to know what udims were but never used them and somehow scared me. One day I watched a tutorial and created a couple udims for my uvs, and exported them to substance. It was easy and made me step up my game with texturing, also made me feel more confident.

Invert green channel with the vector math multiply node with values (1,-1,1) Its faster and uses less nodes

You can invert the green channel by using the invert color node.

How does subtracting 1 invert the green channel? I cannot get that to make any sense. It would just offset the values by 1. Normally you would have to multiply or divide with a value of -1, to invert anything.
@MikeSmith3D Жыл бұрын
Sure thing, So first off, an invert node works just fine. I had seen on the forums that it should be done with substract, but apparently it's unnecessary. But to answer the question, color channels are just shades of gray from black to white, expressed as a number. 0-1. If you subtract 1 minus 0 (black), it equals 1 (white). So you've converted black to white. If you subtract 1 minus 1(white) it becomes 0 (black). So it converts all the black to white. It works for all the shades of grey in between. 1-x is a very common math node in node-based programs for inverting things. In unreal the invert node is even just called 'OneMinus.' Since I'm new to blender and the forums couldn't agree on how to invert green, I just used a universal math trick that is used across the industry to invert stuff.
@noxlupi1 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I testet it out in a simple math expression, it seems to check out. funny.. never thought of using that, been working in the industry for 25+ years, retired from CGI some 15 years ago. Always used multiply to invert. ;) Also, in my head I subtracted after the value, which only offset, and that didn't make sense, but now it makes a little more sense, as you start the value from a mirrored value ;)
@MikeSmith3D Жыл бұрын
@@noxlupi1 Yep I made that mistake all the time too haha. I would always do x-1 instead of 1-x at first.

Does "Invert" node work the same for inverting the green channel?
@donaldcourtemanche2395 Жыл бұрын
I think it would invert all 3 channels. So you need to do it the way he does it
@MikeSmith3D Жыл бұрын
I've been reading in the forums that you can invert the color in a few different ways, but by using separate xyz, you keep it as numbers instead of converting it to color and then back to numbers. It's slightly faster
@exmello Жыл бұрын
Colors channels are just numbers and colors are vectors, they're one and the same especially in the shader world. There is no conversion going on. Though some of the color related nodes may be slower if you're directly comparing a map range to a color ramp or math nodes to rgb curves, depending on how they're implemented. But that's just because the node is doing more math, not because it is color data specifically.
@MikeSmith3D Жыл бұрын
@@exmello Good to know! Thanks! That's intuitive, but a few people on the forums had the same answer for me. So I figured there was something in the background about blender I wasn't aware of.
@bucklogos Жыл бұрын
I have written a few HLSL shaders and it makes sense that a vector is the same thing as a colour from computation point of view.
@meshfactory Жыл бұрын
You can plug an 'rgb curves' node instead ...and simply flip the green channel...
@hypeuprise7026 Жыл бұрын
I would say this is more of a shading tips video, not texturing. I work in the industry and would just like to clarify that for anyone who is interested in working as a 'texture artist'. This is still good to know but it's more on the lookdev side. Texturing would be creating the actual maps in a tool like Substance or Mari.

If you don't need the close up detail it's definitely a lot to take on, but for a single model, UDIMs and multiple sets are the only way to retain it!
