Blending coloured pencil with solvent - Tutorial with Cat's eye reference.

In this tip video I show you how I build up the layers in coloured pencil, going from light to dark and then blending with 'Zest it' pencil blend in between layers to create a more painterly look and to get rid of the graininess of the paper. Solvent is also a great tool to use when working in coloured pencil as once it's dry, you can then add lighter colours over dark, which is usually difficult to do in coloured pencil.

Very useful! Why do you think most artists don't like solvent? I'm not an artist and in my actual work I'm using solvent and I really love it, because the texture and the layers looks better. Thank you for your tutorial!

Sandra Pinto thank you so much! I think like any tool it has it’s uses and is definitely more suitable for certain pieces. It can have a bit of a matting/flattening effect sometimes. I never tend to use it on commissions because you don’t have as much control as you do with just pencils and there’s always the worry you might ruin it. I think it’s a very useful tool though and love the painterly look it creates!
