I spoke with a WW2 vet this weekend who flew '24's against German Uboats. His plane caught a U-boat off Spain in '44, and attacked with depth charges. The U-boat had some friends in the air as escort who shot at the '24. The crew, fearing the bullets of the Messerschmidt's hitting their depth charges, dropped everything, and sunk the U-Boat, while they got shot down by the German fighters. Odd way to make a kill, but a damned good story.

This is a Blenheim MK V, the latest version of this bomber. He was used to a very limited extent in North Africa, but was widely used in Southeast Asia from mid-1942 to mid-1943. Perhaps the film has been made at this time, before the institutionalization of roundels in two shades of blue typical front CBI.

@speedofc: Many thanks for your kind reply and many, many thanks for serving our country overseas in Vietnam, surely one of the darkest episodes in our national history, for want of courage over here to do "the right thing" in victory and defeat.

This is a Blenheim Mk V being flown by one of the RAF squadrons unlucky enough to operate it in 1943 during the Tunisian campaign - hence the shorts.

@teniootti werent blenheims allies planes though infact i know they were.. can u explain this at all? Some early or pre war lend lease or somehting?
@Long2316 жыл бұрын
They were cutting edge when they first flew - the RAF had only just introduced their first fighter with a fully enclosed cockpit (and even that was a biplane). These were the days when if aircrew were a bit cold, they had to put on another lawyer of underwear.

During the winter war many western nations supported finland against russia, at the time finland was allied to no one and russia was allied to the germans. Its not as odd as you first think. It wasn't until the continuation war that finland became an ally of germany and we supported russia.
@EdMcF13 жыл бұрын
Finland was not an ally of Germany but a co-belligerent, unlike say, Hungary.

Probably Royal Australian AF. This was almost certainly partly filmed in Australia by the vegetation in the background.Possibly Amberley AFB near Brisbane but might have been almost anywhere else along the coast. The centre of the roundel of the plane has been painted over to prevent confusion with the Japanese red sun. River at 1:24 might be the Nerang near Surfer's Paradise, Queensland Aust. before canal development began in the 1960s Just guessing

Not really, when Britain was considering supporting Finland agianst Russia, Russia still had a non-aggression treaty with Germany. It was only after Germany invaded Russia in 1941 that Finland allied its self with Germany.

Finland aligned itself with Germany, it was not allied with them, but a co-belligerent.

Wrong. The Finns used Blenheims, not Germans. Finns even built most of the Blenheims used there. And the swastika that was the FAF emblem those days, was not the same, as the German swastika. Finns used swastikas in FAF-planes since the beginning of the century, it was the personal emblem on Swedish count Von Rosen, who donated the first aeroplane to Finnish army in 1918 with a swastika painted in it.

@copferthat kebab is not Greek, it's either Persian or of Arabic origin. The greeks did invent a lot of maths, science, philosophy, tactics of war and art too. Truth to be told the Greeks did get a lot of their knowledge from the Egyptians, Persians, Sumerians and other great civilizations before the Greeks. For instance the Egyptians knew about Pythagoras triangle before Pythagoras himself. Rome, took over the lead, then others.
