"You bless by paying attention." Thanks much, Jack. Both your stories remind me of something our teacher once said about this. Naturally he used to get called on fairly frequently by people who were sick or dying or bereaved or whatever--people up against it and suffering in some way--and his take was that, in the end, all you can really do, or the best thing you can do, for somebody is simply to be with them. I was struck by this, and have found that if you're serious about the being with, it is remarkably true. (Even if you're just a regular person and not a zen priest or teacher.) We are by habit lonely creatures, and at such times our solitude and singleness can be a terrible burden.

Thank you very much Jack. Blessing a dying person...giving them our undivided attention, immersing ourselves in that shared moment...not easy. There is another way of blessing which is the state of grace, that can happen to you in moments, in my case, difficult...without you hardly realizing it life takes you in its arms...they are almost unrepeatable...I say almost, because I am still waiting for it to happen to me again.....

Thanks Jack. Always interested in your direct experiences as a monk. Too easy to get wrapped up in the theory of this malarkey, manifesting it in real life is the challenge.

Oops. Just saw a typo in, um, the first two dang minutes of video. "Royalty free" is what I meant. How can YOU HAVE A TYPO IN A VIDEO, man???? That's like one misspelled word out of...five, six?? Get it together!!!

I can't afford to support you on patreon, but i did buy and read Zen Confidential. I found it hilarious, heartwarming, and deep. Thank you. An elder at my center told me a story (you probably know) about a Zen master calligrapher who was offerd a lot of money to do a scroll containing the core teachings of buddhism. The master simply wrote a large chinese character meaning "attention". The patron got mad and said "there must be more then that!!!" And in response the master underlined it... twice, handed the man the paper and refused any money. My dad is dying. We've had a tough relationship throughout my life. Now when i see him sometimes i just hug him as he cries. A lot of the time ill hold his hand while he angrily rants for hours about conservative politics. I give him my full attention, i try to cherish every millisecond spent with him. This hugging and hand holding practice I've started with him came directly from your descriptions of your inteactions with you teacher. Thank you for this simple yet deeeeep teaching.🙏

Your girlfriend could try Feldenkrais. It could help her to learn new postures and movement patterns . Lots of practitioners in Austria.

why would loved ones be exempt from the people one can bless? It seems to me that the more relevant question is : Does the other person have any access to the sacred? if not, then there is not much to enhance in their experience. But also no loss... So as long as the one who gives the blessing is sincere, and not a con artist I see no problem.
