Also a big thank you note to Ashkan, Priyansh and Klaudia for bravely taking this challenge of having their portfolios public and open to public opinion. This was very refreshing. Great to see that a big office like Zaha Hadid has a lot of similarities to the smaller offices here in the US that Ive worked for. The only thing I didn’t have in common was the need to show a face. Some people disagree because your design skill should be more important than your physical beauty. Some bosses care about your looks, but in the smaller offices my experience is those offices tend to be toxic workplaces.
@marianacabugueiracustodiod95483 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa I understand what you mean :) In no way a photo on a CV should be evaluated under beauty criterias! imagine that, everything I am against of actually hah I dont see why you would not stand up for your face, you mean a lot more than your work or your design skills :) unconsciously I feel closer to you when I see the person behind the work, it is human psychology, I feel, It is no longer a robot with good designskills. It is warmer. Of course this is not a deal breaker, for me or anyone, it is up to you and how you feel more comfortable ❤

I liked that you guys didn't fixated on graphics and illustrations, like many people do. One can easily know that yeah, architecture is about planning, personality and visual sense! Really appreciate your take on the projects and designs. I have a question about how to make an icon out of our projects?
@marianacabugueiracustodiod95483 жыл бұрын
Thank you Yash :) regarding project icons, and very briefly explained, if you try to re design your projects with less and simplistic lines (start by drawing the least amount of lines possible and keep adding more until your project is recognisable) you will achieve an idiogram of your project - although the project got decomposed in less lines it is still recognisable in them - this can be used as the icon. Another way to get an icon out of your project would be isolating an unique feature of it (can be the colour, some specific shape, a diagram, even the section) and replicating this feature as the project symbol. Something memorable. If you check BIGs projects, all projects have a very unique icon. this will help you :)

useful videos on architecture in general are hard to come by, your is one of those rare ones. Good content. thank you for sharing. I have 17 years of experience in the profession and putting a portofolio together for me right now is quite difficult. I came to a conclusion that I only need to include my top 5 projects to make emphasis on and feel abd to leave some prpjects out, they are ll our own, but have to be brief on showing what one's experience is through the portfolio--I have been on the interviewing side for so long and can judge portofilios well, it just sucks when ni ahve to do it mkyself mainly because of time available, but it is important to collect good material and like I said, show the best of the best----.

@marianacabugueiracustodiod95483 жыл бұрын
max 5 to 10 pages? never heard such thing.. they are seriously getting lazy these days, uh?... Well, just adapt to that then. A full spread render should apply to your best project only. Make sure you cover concept, design, diagramming and technical drawing on each project. if its a 5 page thing I would compose each spread as if it was a competition board. You know the ones where you fit all the info together? shame they make our whole academic work reducted to 5 pages...

@@odipanda5673 Hi, your comment jumped at me, because I know a lot of architects who dream of opening their own firms going down the competition route (I am a sole practitioner working on my own), and from what I saw with them it's a dead end approach. Your odds of winning a competition are very slim and even if you do, you will most likely never build the project, because of 1 of 2 possible reasons: 1. The project is very big and you don't have the manpower or experience to handle it so you will not be able to deliver it, or 2. most competition projects are theoretical and don't get built. Instead, try to find your own clients. It doesn't where, or what project, even if it's something as small as a room for a friend, that will get you started in a much better position rather than doing competitions and hoping you hit it big. Wish you all the best, it's not an easy road!

One thing I see missing in portfolios is knowledge of construction documentation and the meaning of the symbols. Do you find it beneficial for designers to include elevation marks, section marks, and callouts for references to other images? Portfolios are beautiful but it always comes as a surprise having to teach someone these basics.
@marianacabugueiracustodiod95483 жыл бұрын
Definitely yes! Super important, thank you for pointing this out Miranda! When I asked in this portfolio review for the students to have at least one plan spread out in a wider format it is exactly to see their skills on issuing technical drawings. Not just to see how you organize space but also (and mainly tbh) to see if they can actually issue 2d documentation. My uni teachers were actually a pain regarding technical drawings, all marks, all callouts, even the dashboard's spacing. I think we all expect new employees to have this knowledge :) So definitely include them in plans and sections. Kisses

It amazes me how they are reviewing/criticizing portfolio compositions when the background in the video is mirror with a very obvious dark smudge(not even centered). background choice is distracting, on the first cover the vibrant colors make contrast with the background but once they go to the first page of the portfolio it is confusing, it looks as if the background is part of the portfolio.

i am architect as well, but after i got to work to the 'real' work site, i feel like an architect is just imaginative without civil enginering. all that good or awesome design are just on the paper without the enginer. and yeah, i feel bad for those enginer because if there is the good or unique building, people always just ask who is the architect/designer, not the one who built / calculate all the structure problem. this is what i was concern right now and hit me hard. sorry for bad english.

Hi Randy. You made your point very clearly :) No doubts that we need the best collaboration between professionals to create great things, not just engineers, but landscape architects and designers, interior designers, Light designers, contractors, etc etc a whole team of ambitious and active people. We make sense in a team and as a team!

I don't understand it. Why would the host say "oooh, yah", and agree with Ms. Cabugueira Custódio dos Santos, when it's clearly the Farnsworth House. Are they looking at the same page, and looking at the same image?
