@deblovetrains For all water soluble oil paints it is best to use a water soluble oil painting medium to thin your paints rather than using water. A tiny bit of water is okay - however, if you use too much water, or too much paint medium for that matter, it will thin out the paint binder too much reducing the integrity of the paint. It is best to use water for cleaning and stick to mediums for changing the consistency of your paint slightly.

For oiling out the water mixable oils, we recommend using the Artisan Water Mixable Painting Medium and a clean cloth. Rub the medium into the dull/sunken areas and allow to dry for one to two days. Repeat as necessary until the sheen is to your liking. For more information, feel free to contact our Product Experts at info@dickblick.com or 1-800-933-2542.

If you are working with both regular oil paint and W&N Mixable it is importnant to not mix more than 30% regular oil paint into the water mixable paint or it will no longer have the water soluable properties. If you are not concerned about it being water soluable and will be using solvent for cleaning your brushes, the paints can be mixed at any ratio.

@AlyaaGad Thank you for your question and comment. There are many different grades of linseed oil: Oil that you would consume is not processed in the same way as oil you would use for art or other purposes - and one is not appropriate for the other. It is likely that food grade oil will go rancid over time and ruin your artwork.

Thank you for mentioning the tips about brushes at the end of this clip! That's just one thing I have been researching and the selection is overwhelming! Now I know to buy synthetic as I did purchase these W&N water soluble paints...huge piece of advice, u gave. Now what about gesso and gamsol? What's your recommendation ?thanks in advance.

@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 8 ай бұрын
It's not recommended to use Galkyd or other alkyd-based mediums containing hydrocarbon solvents with these paints, but there are water-miscible alkyd products that are compatible. The same guidelines for varnishing apply to WM oils as traditional oil colors, even if alkyd is used. Hope this helps! www.dickblick.com/categories/painting/mediums/oil/?type=water%20mixable%20oil%20mediums&

Does water make it more transparent as well?
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art Жыл бұрын
Some colors may become more transparent after thinning due to reduced film thickness, but the effect is much more specific to the pigment. Water miscibile oil doesn't have the same optical effect as gum arabic, the watercolor binder which imparts luminosity and sparkle. To increase transparency in WM oils, we recommend the use of a compatible painting medium, or WM stand oil. Thanks for your question!

So if oil paint oxidizes, could you in theory, put it in an oxygen chamber to make it dry faster?

I may have to try these out next time I need more oil paints. I absolutely hate the clean up of traditional oil paints, with the paint thinner and needing to be in a well ventilated area, having to go outside and spending time cleaning my brushes in a special container (usually my trash can) Not to mention disposing of the paint thinner when I'm done with it. I would much rather use water to clean it up.

@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 7 жыл бұрын
+Melissa Lee The thinner does have a slight odor to it, but not as strong as mineral spirits or traditional turpentine. If you want to be completely solvent free, use the Artisan Linseed Oil, Artisan Quick Dry Medium, and/or just water with the paints.

Thank you for the reply! I watched somewhere that though it's called water-mixable oils, it should not be used with water. Water is just for brush cleaning. It is great if I can just use water.

The quick drying medium has an awful smell (sharp, chemical smell), FYI, I would stay away from it since you're painting in a small area. The linseed oil does not have any odour.

Did I understand you correctly that you have to wait 6 months to a year before you can varnish a painting when you use the WMO's?
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 7 жыл бұрын
+Barbara Jarreau Yes, because Water Miscible Oils are still an oil based product that requires oxidation rather than evaporationto cure it is recommended to allow them to dry for 6 months to a year (depending on paint thickness and mediums used) before applying a final varnish.

There are some othe brand varnishes what allow oil paint to breath and cure under it,and you can apply those let’s say Like month after painting without any problems.I personally don’t like W&N varnishes cos you can’t use them for soo long and can’t Leto painting go as fast I would want to and for that reason woulorecomend them.On other hand mediums and Artisan paints are grate,Love my Thinner,fast drying medium and Linseed oil,those are must need and grate prices for this type of paints.Hope it helps 😉

@Blick_Art

+GekkO Artisan Water-Mixable Oils (as well as any other brand of water-mixable oil,) can be mixed with traditional oil paints very well. The only thing to keep in mind is that mixing more than about 15 to 20% traditional oil into a water-mixable oilwill negate it’s water-mixable properties.

if you want to do a wet on wet technique, what would I use? just spray water on the canvas ? I'm confused.
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 8 жыл бұрын
+Sheryl Ketchum If you have the Bob Ross Liquid White or Liquid Clear, you can still use that for your wet on wet technique with the watermisible oils. If you make your own ground for wet on wet, mix some of the Artisan Stand Oil into a color of your choice and apply that to the surface. If you prefer a colorless base for your wet on wet, simply apply a layer of stand oil to the surface and then paint as you would normally. For the water miscible paints, you will have the most success if you still use mediums and leave the water for cleaning out your brushes only. If you have additional questions, you can reach Blick Product Information at 1-800-933-2542 or info@dickblick.com. Thanks!

I guess it depends on artist what to chose.These still are oil paints,water is good to clean up,but I wouldn’t use it work process for colour shift.dont want to get surprise week after 😉

hi dear i can use Winsor & Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paint to paints first face before going to use my normal oil color ? This will be helpful in reducing the possibility of color cracking or not ?
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art Жыл бұрын
You can use water-miscible oils with traditional oil paint, though the resulting mixtures lose some or all of their water miscibility. WM oils won't reduce the likelihood of cracking, however, any more than any other oil paint. A few of the reasons for paint cracking is lack of flexibility, insufficient oil binder, or too-rapid drying. If your paint is cracking, check to see if your ground/gesso is absorbing too much oil from the paint; add a medium like alkyd which promotes flexibility, or avoid the use of additional driers. Hope this helps!

Can you buy the liquins and use for glazing likes the Masters...I know they painted layers of glazes and I'd like to do that but I have respiratory problems and can only use the water soluble paint. and why do you have to wait 6 months to varnish?
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 7 жыл бұрын
+Laurel Schmitz Using Liquin with water mixable oil paint will negate the water cleanup characteristic of the paint. Liquin also contains petroleum distillates, so the fumes from it are mildly toxic. For that reason, you may want to consider a different medium for glazing that does not have a solvent in it. For any additional questions, you can reach Blick Product Information at 1-800-933-2542 or info@dickblick.com. Thanks! Reply ·

The majority of colors in oil paint brands use pigments that are safe enough to carry the AP seal indicating safe for all ages. Look on the tube or product listing for the AP seal; the CL seal indicates that special handling is needed for safe use. Winsor & Newton Artisan Oils are water-miscible so they can be thinned and cleaned up with water. Traditional oil paints can be thinned with solvent-free mediums like Walnut oil Alkyd, or with walnut oil alone (using minimal amounts).

+Cleetus S It is best to only use the water for cleaning up, not as a medium. If you do not have access to mediums, then a little water can be added - a few drops or a wet brush is sufficient. If you want to use them for glazing, it is best to invest in one of the Artisan Mediums. If you have additional questions, you can reach Blick Product Information at 1-800-933-2542 or info@dickblick.com. Thanks!

Aw i thought I could just use water to paint with them, since that is what my art professor told me....? Would just using water alone work? Guess I'll grab some of that other stuff then I suppose, either way.
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 8 жыл бұрын
+remainingembers It really is best to use lineseed oil or one of the Artisan Painting Mediums for the best results. Simply think of the water as mineral spirits. Too much mineral spirits will break down the paint film and thus makes an unstable and likely to crack. Water will do the same thing in this case. If you are plein air painting or painting in class and you don’t have access to the mediums, water can be used, but use as little as possible. If you have additional questions, you can reach Blick Product Information at 1-800-933-2542 or info@dickblick.com. Thanks!
