Years ago, Rik played at a pre-Indy 500 show in downtown Indianapolis. The show began and Rik tried waving at the soundboard guy to turn him up. He tried several times with no luck. So...he strolled back to his stack and twisted the knob himself. The additional blast of power was massive and the crowd went absolutely CRAZY. The crowd erupted so much that his bass player (same guy in this video) was visibly shaken. He had a look like what in the heck just happened. It was almost as if he had never experienced such a reaction before. It was a cool moment that set the vibe for the rest of the set. Rik is a guitar hero. Such an incredible talent.

Don't forget Steve Skingley's bass .... poor Steve often gets overlooked 😂 Actually, Steve and I are Doppelgangers of one another (more back in the 2000's but as late as 6 years ago or so) Rik initially mistook me for Steve at a meet and greet after a show in Utica NY as did some fans. Rik made a joke out of it though, which was cool. Now, if I only have learned how to play the bass!!😂😂😂

It's sad that Triumph came from the same soil as Rush just a couple years after... they were compared, and often mistaken for each other. Living in Buffalo NY in the 70s and 80s granted me the privilege of hearing a lot of air play from this underrated trio, at the time Rush was hammering it. That being said, I feel that if Rush wasn't there, Triumph would have had more respect. Then again, if it wasn't for Rush, Triumph might not have been noticed. Paradxal perhaps.
@A1Adaydreaming5 жыл бұрын
Rik Emmett is a true triple threat which is so rare in rock and roll. There are great vocalists but usually for a REALLY great vocalist, that's their primary instrument. (think Steve Perry, Roger Daltrey, Freddy Mercury, etc.) Then there are great guitarists, but the REALLY great guitarists focus on the guitar and usually let someone else carry the vocals. Think Neil Schon, Jimmy Page, etc.) Playing really good guitar is a technical skill and an art all at the same time. It requires a lot of focus. Who can focus on singing while all of that is going on? It's hard to do. Then there's the guys that are the consummate "frontmen". They sing, but they also need personality. They need to understand how to interact with a crowd, get them into it, make them feel like they are a part of the show. Some people just come out and perform but are not really great at bringing the crowd in. Emmett literally has it all. All I see from him is what appears to be a super nice guy who is appreciative of his audience and is concerned that they have a good time at his show, combined with an incredible voice, combined with not just decent guitar work, but really excellent guitar work. I play guitar and I know what to look at when I see a player. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise...if you forget about the vocals and the stage presence and all of that and ONLY focus on Rik's guitar method, he's a master. He's as good as it gets. In rock and roll circles, go ahead and put him up there with Schon or Pete Townsend or Alex Lifeson...he can hold his own. When I think "great vocalist combined with great guitar player" there are a few that I put in that category but not a lot. David Gilmour comes to mind. Geddy Lee (even though it's a bass and not lead/rhythm...his bass lines are very tasty and complex) comes to mind. Not rock and roll...but Gordon Lightfoot has this kind of package. Elton John can do it with vocals and piano...equally as complicated. Yes, there are a few that are in this class. More than I have mentioned here. But Rik Emmett is definitely in that club. I am not sure that he gets the credit he deserves. I don't know if he's mentioned in the same way as some of these others. But he definitely is right there with them, in my opinion. I have a huge amount of respect for his talent and I am also impressed at how good he STILL is today. He's literally been a powerhouse for 40 years.
@briankeith62565 жыл бұрын
Quadruple threat, really--he writes the songs as well. Hes an AMAZING musician. But he makes it look so easy, I think folks have overlooked him through the years.

Rick was playing Randy Roads before Randy but who gets the credit? Don't believe me? Lay It on the Line was recorded in 1978. Blizzard of Oz was recorded in 1980. Even the run at the end of the Lay In on the Line solo (1978) is similar to the end run of the Crazy Train solo (1980). Rick has always been a humble guy and would never say it but we can say it. Nothing against Randy Roads here but Rick was better. God rest Randy's soul and we all thank him for the great music. Rick's music is just as great and he was when Randy was with us A by far superior guitarist and overall musician.
