I know I'm by no means the first musicologist to remark on Jesse's natural musical abilities, but my god she would make one interesting case study for anyone researching savant musicality in ASD folk. I just finished a doctorate in reimagining historical sound in contemporary roleplay and revival, which is not really related to this at all, but I've noticed a surprising crossover between the techniques your therapist is using here and some of the theoretical frameworks in my research surrounding musical "signs" and communication via melody. I'm particularly interested in how your therapist has established certain melodic cells to communicate specific instructions (eg: the "no biting" descending 4 notes). Something that both you and your music therapist might find interesting is indigenous Sámi music from northern Norway, Sweden and Finland. They have a vocal technique called joiking which involves evoking and representing people, objects and ideas using their voices; not even necessarily with lyrics, but adapting the rhythm, melodic line and overall "feel" of the joik to effectively evoke the idea of something. There's recently been some new research at the Arctic University of Norway into joik's capabilities as a healing and/or sensory tool in dementia patients, and I think elements of the technique could definitely be applied to non-verbal communication in ASD folk as well. At the very least, it's something to look up, listen to and maybe Jesse will like it. :) I absolutely loved watching this video, it made me cry about a billion happy tears most of the way through and I can't even explain exactly why. I just love seeing Jesse be able to communicate in a way that suits her. Happy new year to you and your fantastic family.

I know nothing about autistic therapy but it seems like Jesse mite do well with a rhythm sound in the background all the time. Like a metronome quietly in the background when she's learning. From this vid she seems way more focused when she's clapping out a rhythm. I don't think it's just a tactile comfort but a regular occurring sound that helps her anchor her.....mind....thought. Mite even b calming when she's maxed out. I even find the sound of a metronome soothing. Just an observation put together with what little I've seen in docs about autism & patterns being a comfort

I love how much you guys involve Bethany in Obed's lessons! You can see that Bethany is truly interested and invested in helping, not just tagging along like some kids might be. I bet having Bethany there really helps Obed too. Has Bethany considered looking into training as a therapist of some kind? Or maybe an aide? I bet she would be fantastic at that. I like how even her chores are centered on Obed. You can see that she really cares for him, but is also willing to push him and help him improve! Also, Obed's bopping his head to the beat was adorable and spot on... You've definitely got yourselves a percussionist there! Go Obed!!

It's of my humble opinion that, though the family would make great inspirational entertainment through mainstream television, the mainstream media often skews the way we receive the message of what we're viewing. While the parents are currently allowing us to glimpse into the life of their family, through KZbin, we see what they see and how they would like us to see it. It's purer and filtered through the parents. I personally wouldn't like this gift being dropped into the hands of corporate T.V. Again, just my opinion.

I’ve had such a gift for music ever since I was little. I’m not a savant. But I do have perfect pitch, and I do play by ear, and I do learn songs quickly. But it takes me a few times. Music therapy has helped me in so many ways. To communicate my emotions using music, instead of pushing them down and ignoring them. To accept them, feel them, and communicate it through improvisational music. It has helped my complex PTSD, my autism, and my other conditions tremendously. I’d like to work on getting rid of the self injurious behavior through music therapy. But I feel like I’m way too old for that, and I don’t sit on the same part of the spectrum as Jesse.

@SixBlindKids4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this observation, Claire! It is very important to not force these kids into something they are not interested in, but rather to draw out their ability to communicate what THEY want to do! There is controversy, as you obviously know, about teacher led vs. Student led. Hopefully others reading this will see this, too! I believe we found a gem in Zoe because she really has this down! She is definitely in charge of the session because the kids need the direction, but she follows their lead within that structure. 😉😊❤❤❤
