Pausing when asked to shows great lack of ego, and independently understanding to pause shows sophisticated understanding.

This is still one of my favorite Derek videos ever... He SLAYS in jazz improv, and with a full band of seasoned jazzmen... its not even funny. And he could go on slaying for 6 hours if the song lasted 6 hours. What an artist.

Derek actually has his own quartet with a really awesome violinist, vocalist and drummer. They tour playing jazz standards complete with Derek's insane improvisations and also have an album out. Check out their website if you want to see some more of Derek playing with other jazz musicians - derekparaviciniquartet.com/

I am courious of what happend at 4:45. Derek tap his left hand with his right hand. I wonder if it was a self correction for the sound just before that incident. Just around 4:36 the sound goes out of sync and out of tone.
@frigital10 жыл бұрын
I just noticed... hm.. i think the notes and tempo are relevant but not out of sync , but as if from another song with similar harmony and the tap is as if to get back on this song..
@MeharBhogal10 жыл бұрын
Neat catch, I think you're right.
@GetUpTheMountains10 жыл бұрын
He is playing chordal accompaniment to the sax solo using alot of 1's and 5's on the left hand in a stride style. He gets turned around when the song goes to the next chord, so he drops out because it doesn't sound right (and he can tell). He bops his hand on the 4th beat of the measure and is right back in the groove with the right chords by beat 1 of the next measure. This is a common thing for any musician who find themselves lost a bit during improvisation. As soon as you locate where the song is, you just jump right back in! The audience is usually not paying attention enough to notice. ;)
@fraserkatie8 жыл бұрын
When Derek started to learn he never learnt to distinguish his left from right so thats probably why he does it!
@aumentada8 жыл бұрын
it looks to me that somebody told him to do the chords and stop the bass that was messing with the bass player ( pianists often forget to keep the bass off :D ) derek aknoledges that and "punishes" his left hand for doing such evil hehe
@AngryNerdBird12 жыл бұрын
Guy can play two pianos at once, one with each hand. Playing one handed ain't even remotely difficult for him. It's mad.
@landsgevaer Жыл бұрын
Sure. The two piano thing isn't that hard, actually. Not "easy", but doable. Just a different arm posture, but movement of the hand is the same. Organ players do it all the time. And feet as well. 😉

As humans, we are saddled with self awareness, and so the vast majority of musicians play with some egotistical drive. This can be good, generating individual styles and beautiful sounds. Derek's contribution is his utter lack of pretension combined with a virtuosic command of his instrument. He plays as though breathing through the keyboard. There is always truth in his music.
