Luna was definitely still imprisoned on the moon when Sunset was still Celestia’s student. So Luna appearing at the beginning of the film is the present time, but then slowly cuts to the past, hence why at the very end it now showed Twilight readying herself that sets the stage for Equestria Girls. Moondancer deserves more recognition than initially given in the episode Amending Fences.

9:30 Celestia was taught by Starswerl the champion for not understanding friendship. Even if she did have friends she would just have to watch them grow old and die. Who could do that for over 1000 years? No wonder she is so focus on making new Alicorns so she can have a friend who will last.

I think reason why celestia wanted sunset to make some friends so much was because her sister's return was getting closer by day and celestia still thought sunset was going to be next bearer of element of magic and she could have have been grooming sunset to eventually become alicorn princess but celestia knew sunset had to let friendship into her heart first that's why celestia didn't handle the situation with sunset the way she should have and avoided all of this though twilight wouldn't be who she is today as result.

Let me give you the rundown since you talked through the first bit of the animation and seemed to be having issues. Celestia lowering the sun. Luna comes up behind her, Celestia acknowledges her and turns back around and goes inside. She goes to Twilight's room, sees she's sleeping and decides against what she was going to tell her. She then goes to the mirror, touches it then recounts her relationship with Sunset Shimmer before she went to the world through the mirror. Come back to the real world and it shows Twilight as she's about to go through the same mirror Sunset went through and thus, the story comes full circle. Hope that enlightened you a little as to what you missed.

Hey Blank. I think the scene between Luna and Celestia was before Luna's banishment. Luna, yet again, coming to 'tia to remind her of her failure to make friends as they ruled Equestria. I feel 'Tia failed due to the disappearance of Star Swirl and the other Pillars. She was apprehensive due to fear any friends made would also disappear. Otherwise, everything was pretty much as given. Your idea, that Luna was there to nudge 'Tia to send Twilight, could also be and explanation as well. just my thoughts, the Frank Pony
