I like that they made Mudbriar annoying, even to us viewers. It's a pretty brave move, because it forces the viewers into the same situation Pinkie is in, and thus makes it harder to accept Pinkie being wrong and needing to learn a lesson to begin with. It can easily make people not like the episode, because they'll just think Mudbriar is annoying, doesn't deserve Maud and just want him gone. But that's the entire key point. That we as viewers, just like Pinkie, have to accept his annoying personality for the sake of Maud's happiness. It works so well within this episode's arc, and is a sign of some of the best storytelling the series has seen, even if there's some people who are too blind to see it. It's a really good test of where your own morals lie as well, because if you can't accept a cartoon character for the sake of another cartoon character's happiness, then you're gonna have a REAL hard time doing it with real people and should reconsider some things. I do hope they give Mudbriar some more dimensions in any possible future appearances, so he'll be a bit easier to like, but I hope they still keep the core idea that Pinkie doesn't get along with him, for continuity and the moral of this episode to be even more real.

The moral is that Maud sees something in Mudbriar past his dull, lumpy outer shell, and that even if Pinkie is never able to see past that outer shell and find the beautiful gem inside Mudbriar, that doesn't mean it's not there. There's a beautiful gem inside everyone. Some people are diamonds, some are geodes. But regardless of whether you see the gem or not, everyone deserves respect and common decency. Pinkie didn't learn to like Mudbriar, she learned that even if she can't see what makes him so special, Maud can and that's all that matters.

I always thought of her more as an element of redemption since she reformed the changeling hive and actively tried to talk Twilight into saving Styngian as well as reform Juniper Montage. Twilight reformed some ponies too but those were more of side effects from defeating them.
