"In case she trips teachers"... the teachers can see the cane. The kids can see the cane. How is taking away a cane used for walking safely and freely helping anyone?

It occurs to me that the Sensory Support Service & staff at Hambrook Primary School in Bristol are in desperate need of a daily dose of Red Forman's foot, & perhaps that could reset their scrambled brains. What's ironic is that if they were rendered without sight they would actually be able to SEE that their actions are that of sadistic child abusers (to put it politely) & do not comply with human rights. They are essentially holding Lily-Grace Hooper's life in contempt. This is outright appalling. My heart goes out to Kristy & Lily-Grace Hooper.

What incident set this off though? Did she take a swing at another kid and say it was just her trying to see ahead. If she did, she would most likely not tell her mum. Did someone trip over her for not watching where they were going, leading to this overreaction?

Dannielle Coultas it's ridiculous! I used to need one and too and would have to go to the nurse's office (on the other side of the school from most of my classes) whenever I needed it. Thankfully I never had an asthma attack in class because I probably would have died by the time I got there ._. honestly I understand they want to be safe about that stuff but is it really better to kill a student because a little tiny bit of "chemicals" that can't hurt anyone might get in the air

It's health&safety gone crazy, the cane is the little girls independence, she should be an inspiration to her classmates on how to handle disability not a liability, that she might trip a teacher, So are canes banned for every blind person everywhere like streets, supermarkets in case someone trips or is the cane classed as a lethal weapon ? When the little girl needs the bathroom she has to roundup a posse instead of using her cane let the little the girl have her independence and dignity

That's like taking the wheelchair from a kid with paralyzed legs "because they might run into something" or taking the hearing aid from a nearly deaf kid "because it encourages eavesdropping" or just suspending a kid with a cast "because they might hit someone with it accidentally". Vila Star same cunts will probably ban the dog on the grounds "severe risk to health of others due to potential contaminants on the animal in question, I. e. the canine support apparatus". why don't they just write on their fecking forms "suggested defective child be placed in eradication apparatus, I.e. gas chamber and be exposed to 5ccs of carbon monoxide for period of five minutes. doing so will remove defective offspring and will allow more effective offspring to continue to function at peak conditions" if they think she's that much of a risk..

Actually they can. Worked in an early childhood centre and service dogs for the child was not allowed because an adult has to be trained for the dog as well and centres and schools refuse to spend money on that training for the staff. The cane is a human rights issue in this case. Take them to the human rights burrow and sue the school on that grounds.

Ridiculous. If there is a health and safety issue, it's not the fault of the blind girl using her cane properly. The school's priority should be in accommodating for her and her cane. The whole point of school is to learn how to function in society, and they are denying her the practice she needs to move independently in a populated area.

@Joy6168
@Joy6168 7 жыл бұрын
I completely agree that this is so messed up in so many ways. It's amazing how ignorant and uncaring people can be, about disabilities. I can start, 007K: first, the 7 year old needs the cane for her health and safety, so to take it away from her goes against discrimination laws passed, preventing assistance to those with disabilities being illegal. Second, the school isn't an expert on disabilities, that's the special education teacher's job. Third, if the special education teacher suggested taking the cane away to begin with, I will be furious, because people in that career position should know better. Fourth, if it's the general education teacher or principal or superintendent that suggested this discrimination, then shame on them, they have absolutely no right to make that kind of decision. Fifth, by law, the school can't ban a child from their premises because that child has a disability and know that, so instead of explaining to the other kids why the cane is needed and bullying will not be tolerated, they decide to make her life harder, by banning the cane she needs, which is lazy on it's part. Sixth, that seven year old needs to learn independence, just like any other seven year old, whether she has a disability or not, it's only a matter of time that the child will get hurt in some way, shape or form without her cane, which will most likely result in the school claiming innocence, to not feel the repercussions of their actions, which caused this to begin with. Seventh, the best way to get this school to sit up and take notice about the problem they just caused, is by threatening to take away it's money and the best way to do that, is through a lawsuit.

The problem with a guide dog is that it's not a form of independent travel as the dog is still guiding you just like a person would so it's still just as bad for her proper development. Also guide dogs require constant training from the user and a child really can't provide that so most guide dog agencies have a minimum age of 16 and require some level of formal training in independent travel techniques.

What about the health and safety of the girl? This is just forcing her to rely on adults, something that she should not have to do by now, instead of getting more independence. She KNOWS how important her cane is, it's her 'eyes' and here we have them taking it away. Blind people need their canes and she's mature enough not to harm anyone, if some idiot gets tripped up on it, even though it's obvious that she's blind, that is NOT her fault. And then we have them saying how she has to rely on others, 'why don't you get some independence', it's unforgivable!

it's not a language. it's just a different writing system. think of it this way: what you're reading right now is just lines. the lines have meaning to you because you were taught to read them, but it's not extraordinary, is it? it's the same for blind people.

Lucky for school this wasn't in Finland. Because that would have turned really ugly for the school in like 3...2...1. That is similar to denying access for service dog or saying that you can't come into school in wheelchair. Discrimination.

It's a health and safety issue taking the cane away from the kid! The other kids have eyes and can see the cane, besides she's a kid she wants to explore on her own without some staff holding her hand 24/7 if I were them I would've found a much better school that would accept her for what her needs are. Smh this is so messed up.

I feel so bad for this little girl, not only is she blind, but for the school to ban her using her seeing cane, is disgusting. How heartless and ignorant can the faculty be to take away one of the only means of independence she has? I hope her mom can find her a school where the staff is compassionate and uses common sense. Poor little angel, I hope things get better for her. SMH.

i guess you two would know, since it seems YOU both fell down some stairs and your brains are paralyzed - her class is on a main floor and the school and children should be made aware of assisting her whenever she needs it - but then again people like you are always filled with fear and would rather spend your lives cringing at anything out of the ordinary...

I would hope that in any first world nation that items to help a person with a disability would always be allowed. Walking canes are designed to be seen when in use. They're very hard to miss. I think the school would have been better served educating the children and teachers on how to act around a blind person with a walking cane. Anyone know how this story went after this? Was legal action brought on behalf of the little girl?

This is just like here in the states. I was born with not so strong lungs and was way to little when i was born. 22 now perfectly fine except the lungs. When i was in school they refused to let me bring my inhaler with me. Well in 3rd grade the fucking gym teacher made us climb the rope and back down, then made us run 20 laps around the gym. After wards he made us do 20 push ups and 20 crunches. I warned him i needed to stop and i was sent to the office for defiance. Half way there i had an asthma attack. The teachers thought i was faking until my face turned blue and i passed out. I had to intubated at the hospital. Even after all that they still wouldn't let me have my inhaler. They said i would abuse it. Wtf Well it happened to me again in 5th grade when we were forced to do an obstacle course and later play soccer for gym class. I passed out because of the heat and extreme physical activity. Naturally the school blamed it all on me saying i never told them i had asthma. Wtf You knew i had asthma. You took my inhaler away, said i would abuse it and waited till i turned blue to fucking believe me. I was so glad when i got the fuck out of that elementary school. Middle and high school wasn't much better either but at least they had fucking smart people unlike the elementary school.

i'll never understand why people assume elementary schoolers will "abuse" their inhalers which have no recreational use... if a parent trusts a kid with an inhaler, they should just have to sign a waiver saying they won't sue if the kid somehow "abuses" the inhaler and leave it at that. i wasn't allowed to have my inhaler on me either, which fortunately didn't ever hurt me since they just kept it in the nurse's office and i went there at lunch to take it (it was a daily inhaler, i think they had my emergency one in there too but i don't recall ever having an asthma attack during school). i do remember getting way overheated during gym class once (or maybe field day? i don't remember) and the teachers told me i was fine and to keep going, and then i got home and barfed everywhere from being overheated, fun times... i was also twice exceptional (learning disabled and gifted) and instead of giving me proper support, they denied adhd/nld (nld is basically asperger's but magically not on the autism spectrum, i was later rediagnosed) accommodations based on my IQ, and wouldn't let me participate in gifted stuff based on my average-to-low grades which were due to not having accommodations for my disabilities... so i ended up thoroughly on the "average" track through jr. high and high school, with one exception (being bumped up a math class my senior year) where i struggled with getting decent grades because i couldn't keep up with the level of studying/organization/generally "having it together" that was expected of me, while being utterly bored with the actual material. tl;dr schools are fucking terrible at accommodating disabled kids.

WildAndLiving See this is like telling me I don't have Nystagmus (uncontrolled moving of the eyes, mine rapidly shake back and forth) and can't sit in the front of the class or move by the board so I can actually read. I'm also nearsighted, so that makes it all even worse. My Nystagmus makes it so that anything I try to focus on that's a certain distance (which is unfortunately very short) away starts to shake and it just won't quit moving! It physically hurts after a little bit and I'm forced to give up and have somebody read it to me or move so I can.
