Blind people can watch movies but they rely entirely on sound (obviously) so having a random unrecognizable noise and then having your boyfriend scream would probably get a similar reaction. (also fun fact jump scares are mostly based of sound, due to the way sound travels from your ear to your brain. If you just watch a jump scare mute it normally doesn't have an effect.)
