I can't get over the food critic, Zesty Gourmont isn't it? "She took one look at how empty it was and decided it wasn't even worth a rating." What kind of food critic deems a restaurant 'unworthy' just because it's empty? You're a food critic, not a building critic, just go in there any try it.

I agree with most of your statements, but one thing, Suited for Success-- I firmly believe Rarity didn't need to learn a lesson there. Her business is catering to clients. Yes, she's an artist and adds her flair and does her thing, but it was still the others in the Mane Six's lesson. She wasn't making the dresses for the fashion show, she was doing it for them. The fashion show wasn't her idea, it was Spike's. Also, she tried several times to advise her friends with her fashion sense, but they were the ones caught up in their crazy ideas. :)
@applegeek25978 жыл бұрын
Hmm, that's a hard one to come to a conclusion on in terms of who was right and wrong. While it's true that she tries to meet her client's wishes, it's still her reputation as a designer on the line when such bad designs are displayed in public. Any craftsman who takes pride in his/her work should know when to draw the line so as to not produce something they're not proud of. It's better to refuse to do business with someone rather than compromise your standards, because if you compromise your standards, potential future customers will be less likely to trust you. The problem there is that they weren't just any customers, but rather her close friends, who can be a lot harder to say no to. That said, yes, you are correct in that the others were at fault, as they were too caught up in their wacky ideas about what their dresses should look like to see what they were doing to Rarity. She shouldn't have been forced to choose between maintaining her personal standards and pleasing her friends. For that matter, it's unclear whether she made them for free or not, but if so, then they REALLY shouldn't have been so demanding. Fortunately they finally realized their mistake and managed to turn things around in time to save Rarity's reputation in the fashion world.

This episode's story was pretty by the book and predictable, but the song, visuals, and new characters were great! The humor was pretty spot on as well. I liked how Zesty refused to try the food. That was a fresh addition to this kind of plot, just the kind of thing mlp brings to the table. Overall, I liked this episode.

After watching this episode again through your review of it, I have to find it hilariously ironic that Rarity should talk about "Stuffy Unicorns" since she can be the same way that Zesty can be.
@7Seraphem77 жыл бұрын
Wow... that ending just... just so amazing. WHY CAN I ONLY SUB ONCE!? Seriously, this was just.. just...... So perfect. The thought, the emotion, just, all of it was so damn spot on and perfect. And... yeah, outside of the titular "Friendship is Magic" if there is one theme this show constantly hammers in over and over and truly tries to make clear, it is "Be true to who you are." Don't let others define you, tell you what to think, what to believe. Find what makes you you and embrace it. If others don't like it, to bad for them. ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH! (seriously, Gurran Lagann and Pony would mesh so damn well) Also, one more addition, as epic and spot on and perfect as your bit on Rarity was, there is one more thing to consider. This wasn't her business on the line. This wasn't HER reputation. Yes Rarity will have no qualms about standing up for what she believes in and putting her ideals over her business. But this was Saffron and Cumin's livelihoods she was working with, so why would she be as willing to take risks like that over play it as safe as possible?
@applegeek25977 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you enjoyed my commentary! I know not too many people listen to that part. I'm not sure I fully understand your question though, in that I'm not certain whether you're saying she did the wrong thing or the right thing by trying to change their restaurant. Without going back and watching this again, I would have to say that Rarity probably WAS playing it safe by making the changes. To her, playing by the rules of high society is the definition of playing it safe, regardless of how much work it is. She likely thought she was doing the best thing possible for them, and in the spirit of her generousity, didn't have a problem at all with the workload that resulted. Defying the rules, on the other hand, is a major risk, and I think that at the end, she realized that it was worth the risk in order to not compromise your own beliefs and passions.
@7Seraphem77 жыл бұрын
" I would have to say that Rarity probably WAS playing it safe by making the changes." That was my point. IF this had been her own business, yeah she'd be more likely to buck the trend and do what she thought was better over what was 'expected'. But dealing with other ponies' livelihoods? Of course she'd play it safer.

Alternate interpretation of the whole map-timing thing: the friendship problem was Zesty, not the restaurant itself. They could have gone there at any time to solve that, the restaurant just happened to be the only one currently not conforming at that particular time, and any restaurant could have been used.

I 100% agree with everything you said, especially of Rarity. She was not out of character. This is exactly a part of she is - Do what it takes to succeed in business. The other side of her - the passion for the business (Canterlot Boutique is the best reference I can think of). If you're not passionate about what you're doing, that's a cue to me (like with Coriander Cumin). I agree with everything you said completely. My Little Pony is a show that does well at displaying real-life real world issues and struggles. And I'm so glad you touched on the point that characters do not just learn a lesson and never make the same mistakes or encounter the same issues more than once. It's a process and lifelong experience, and MLP does it so well. Thank you so much for making these videos. As awesome as MLP is, it's always great to hear you express yourself and discuss and share your thoughts with us. Like I said before, your videos make me smile and I can't tell you how much I appreciate you're doing this. I love your post-commentary and thoughts on these MLP episodes. I will always be a supporter. And I'm glad too that you were able to finally come to a peace and understanding about what makes you happy and not stifle your passion to fit the mold. Thanks, I appreciate that. This one really had a lot of depth in terms of the moral messages, so I hope I was able to effectively communicate what I wanted to say about it. I have loved seeing the positive development of Rarity throughout the show, especially in season 6, and now, although I was unhappy at first with what she was doing to the restaurant, I was thrilled to see that these characters are still as flawed as we are. Again, my appreciation for Rarity continues to grow, to my surprise, given that she was originally my least favorite of the Mane 6.

This was a very good episode to put the hiatus on; helps that I like cooking related stuff. I really enjoyed the looks of the two new ponies and hope that we see them again. I loved the message as well; it's okay to be different. I really enjoyed it, and I'm happy that we got a map episode! And the reasoning that they put into why the map wasn't working was very believable. And even though I thought that Rarity was in the wrong I'm happy that she realized her mistake at the end; unlike Zesty. Pinkie Pie on the other hand was great in this episode, and I really enjoyed the song. Great reaction and can't wait for more! XD. Happy that you uploaded the episode. and man I wish I could've been there, sounds like it was fun.

Applegeek, I'm surprised that you didn't even react to the almost frame-by-frame comeback to episode 1 of the same season this episode was in where Rarity was overtly excited about being able to go to Canterlot because of friendship business (and not because of personal, rather prissy and somewhat pathetic reasons--being sarcastic there). While she was fangirling all over the place, we saw pretty much everypony else (including Spike with his 'are you bucking kidding me?!' face) just looking at Rarity like she grew a second head. That's exactly like in "The Crystalling" where Spike explained the chrystalling and also boasted a bit about his exploites of being a hero to the Crystal Ponies. And it shows everypony else with a collected "We get it, Spike--you're popular there" look, and Rarity and Fluttershy were giggling a bit at Spike's actions... I'm surprised that even though this is now probably going on 1 and 1/2 years old, not many commented on that. Of course, I'm pretty sure that others have saw that in the Opening scene.

1. Hmm, interesting, had no idea about that one, though I did wonder if those two chef ponies had any special significance. 2. Again, hmm, didn't notice that. Perhaps Minuette pulled a "Sweet and Elite" and was trying to act like her friends while running around with that particular crowd? To be honest though, likely was just an oversight on the writers' and/or animators' part.

It never occurred to me that Rarity was the only one who was naked in that scene. That's a little funny. But anyway, Rarity's whole goal was to get the restaurant that three hoof rating. The restaurant is not her business, so she wouldn't actually try to take a chance banking on being unique. She didn't want to ruin their business so she had to choose the easiest method to get that goal. Even though Rarity is all about uniqueness and creativity, she is also a very business savvy pony. Rarity is the type of pony who would help another business in a more conservative way rather than taking the more radical route that she herself usually follows. I mean honestly, opening a boutique in possibly one of the least clothed towns isn't exactly the smartest business decision. She made it work because she loves doing it, but she doesn't know if other ponies would love the jobs they do as well.Something else that she could have said to make it seem better is suggest that after they get the three hoof rating, they should just go back to the other food that they love making, But that wasn't thought of during the episode. The episode was supposed to be about both of them being wrong, but the strange unique block that Rarity did sometimes gets to people. Rarity definitely came off as being wrong more than Pinkie. Though this kind of thing actually does happen a lot in real life. A critic gets a little to critical and can easily cause a whole block to serve the same thing. It's how smaller businesses end up being run out of business. It's happened where I live a few times. So you live near or in Minnesota? My Grandparents live there, On my mothers side. They lived near Brownton, but I can't for the life of me remember what the town they live in now is.also sorry about the long comment.

I dunno, Ponyville may be a bit more...casual, but we see a number of high-society type ponies there from time to time, either ones that live there, or ones visiting from Canterlot, and there are special events there where ponies dress up too. Not really all that unrealistic to have a boutique there. ^_^

I LOVE the Whinnyappolis ponies! Totally nailed the Minnesotan stereotype and I'm not even mad! I loved it! Everything from their clothes to the mannerisms they used when they talked, it was just so perfect! LOL! I'd also enjoy a Whinnyappolis episode! That's be 20% cooler!

The one thing I don't like a bought this episode is when did Minuet become so stuck up? She was so bubbly now she's a snob.
@applegeek25978 жыл бұрын
Somebody else pointed that out as well, hadn't picked up on that myself. I think she may have a bit of "Sweet and Elite" syndrome, and was trying to save face in front of her high society friends. Really though, it was likely just an oversight on the animators' part. ^_^

I'm glad you were fair with Rarity she is wrongly blamed to much for this episode .

Yeah, I'm just glad to see that there wasn't a comments firestorm after this one like there was with Newbie Dash. Of course, I may have avoided that simply by posting the reaction almost a week late. In the end though, I'm glad I had some time to work on this one rather than trying to rush through the commentary in order to get it uploaded the same day as the episode's release, because it gave me some time to really think about this one.

ah, halfway through the review, might as well say my piece--concerning how Rarity initially goes about with changing the restaurant. while it isn't the right thing to do and seems like she's disregarding the whole "be yourself" lessons, it can probably be justified that she did it on purpose only because of those strict tastes Zesty has and believing the three hoof rating would fix the problem. like I said, wasn't the right thing to do, but it was understandable as to why she initially did that.
@applegeek25978 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's basically my rambling in a nutshell. Classic case of doing the wrong the for the right reason. We could all see that she was in the wrong, but putting myself in her position, I can understand why she did what she did. But yeah, do we really want to see these characters be perfect all the time? As it is, it's getting a lot harder to come up with new development for such well-rounded characters, and I personally think it's neat to see that just like us, they occasionally forget the past lessons they've learned, and need a reminder.

+Applegeek agreed. anyways, overall I enjoyed this episode way more than I should've. it oddly hits the nail morally with me--I'm of the mindset that opinions are opinions and that they shouldn't always be the same sentiment among others just because one person agrees or disagrees. it may not be a complete favorite episode for me, but I do enjoy the message it spreaded. with That aside, I'm surprised they took a hiatus before even revealing what the ninth episode is for the 13th slot (you see, all the episodes leading up to the hiatus, after a Hearth's Warming Tail, so from Applejack ' s day off to this one, was broadcast out of order from their production order), but that probably means they have something big in mind for it (or that it'll be aired sneakily or no one was able to get info on it, whatever) and just want to surprise us. XD I definitely look forward to seeing one of the rumored titled episodes that will come after the hiatus--"The Times Are a Changeling". granted, as long as it's legit and not a decoy title to throw us off. episode stuff aside, how are you doing, AG?

You ever realized that this show has the royals, nobles, and high status ponies rule everything and they're almost all unicorns?
@applegeek25978 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have noticed that, and it makes sense. As united as they are, there are still three different races, each with their own historical cultures, and the Unicorns have always been more of the scholarly and high-society type. Of course there are always exceptions, but there are definite tendencies in that direction. In fact, going back to the Journal of the Two Sisters, there were various separate Unicorn kingdoms that were united under Celestia's and Luna's rule upon the founding of Equestria.

So on Saturdays, you and Raritydash are the two I look for first for reactions. You two are generally like clockwork as far as timing and posting (my other favorites tend to use vectors, or post a few days later). Hours.. then days pass... I start glancing warily up at the sky, to make sure it's not falling. Then you posted the strike thing, and that you were at a convention (or 2, which you had mentioned in an earlier post, and I completely forgot about). And then you posted this, and all became right with the world again. : ) Anyways, great reaction as always bud. I was a little disappointed ending with these slice of life episodes, but the Trixie, Christmas carol, Fluttershy, and spike episodes more than made it up for me. Keep doing what you do bro! Haylox out.
@applegeek25978 жыл бұрын
Well, I posted the video about the strikes the same day as the episode came out, but yeah, just stinks that that had to happen right then. I know a lot of people didn't hide their videos and were fine, but I didn't want to take that chance. Thankfully it looks like the number of strikes were fairly limited overall, and it's been all quiet the last few days. I'm still waiting for AstrumSpark to sound the all clear for turning S5 videos back on, but I imagine that will be within the next few days if there are no further incidents.

1. A Food Critic is supposed to provide critique / commentary on the food YOU AS THE COOK MAKE; if it's great, well, great; if it's bad then the critic will tell you that. You DON'T cater to a critic's tastes. 2. ALL the ponies at the end are all real-life Chefs! www.equestriadaily.com/2016/06/spice-up-your-life-episode-followup.html#more
@applegeek25978 жыл бұрын
Being a food critic is a legitimate career, and the critiques they offer can be quite valuable. That said, they shouldn't be held in such high regard by patrons as to be the final word on whether or not somebody's food is worth trying. That fault is admittedly more on the patrons than the critics, but some critics do so well in their career that they find that people do put a lot of faith in their remarks, and I think some of them tend to go on a power trip and abuse their position with unfair critiques that are skewed by personal bias. It can go the other way too, btw, where professional chefs that have earned a great deal of respect by their accomplishments try to offer sound advice to less experienced cooks, and those cooks get offended by the constructive criticism and reject their advice. In the end, it's all about balance. The situation in this episode had escalated to such extreme levels that the whole system was broken, and somebody needed to shake things up to open their eyes, which is what Rarity and Pinkie finally managed to accomplish. And yeah, did I forget to mention that? I was aware that there were many ponified chefs in the end, yes, but I'm not sure I knew about all of them, so thanks for the link!

I wish Zesty ended up like Anton Ego....He changed his whole mindset because he tried the food. They are somewhat similar. But Anton Ego was redeemed. He was awesome. But this critic pony was terrible...We can all agree that Anton Ego was the most menacing Food Critic besides Gordon R., right? Anton looks so evil and frightening. Seeing him every time in the movie always gives me the chills. I hope you know who Anton Ego is....If you don't, WATCH RATATOUILLE GOD DAMN IT!!!!! Funny thing is, The guy who voices Quibble Pants in this show is the same guy who voices Remy from Ratatouille.

I like the episode its not one of my favorites but it was still good, I enjoyed both Pinkie and rarity but I would have to say I enjoyed Pinkie more, they interact with each other really well, on a side note i do like Rarity but their has been to much of her this season she has been way over used, while Applejack and Fluttershy have had one episode each, it seems the others have had more screen time than AJ and FLuttershy,, I really want a good AJ episode that gives her character some development, and if they are doing the map again I would have to say that AJ would probably get paired with FLuttershy or Twilight same goes for Rainbow don't think Twilight and FLuttershy would get paired again but i could be wrong as i usually am, nice reaction.
@applegeek25978 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there has been a LOT of Rarity this season. Not only that, but we've had two episodes focusing heavily on Pinkie and Rarity as a team. I hope that means that the rest of the season will focus more on the other characters. Fun fact: Tabitha St. Germain is the only voice actor to have a role in every single episode so far this season. Rarity has been in every single episode except On Your Marks, an episode that was completely devoid of any of the Mane 6, and in that episode she voiced Hoofer Steps, the dance teacher.
