Nelson's blood, I think, refers to the cask of rum used to preserve admiral Nelson''s body after his death at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805, which sailors drilled to drink the rum, and possibly his blood too.

Admiral Horatio Nelson, won the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, but was killed in the process. Glad you enjoyed this one - the Longest Johns used to do more acapella versions of traditional shanties, though you'll find plenty of their tracks with instruments.

AH HA! I have heard of Horatio Nelson! I love that some of these shanties are steeped in history!

@@culurien3331when Nelson was killed he was too important to be buried at sea like the other sailors so his body was preserved in a barrel of alcohol, to be brought back to England. Some say that the alcohol was still drunk by sailors on the return trip, hence a ‘drop of Nelson’s blood wouldn’t do us any harm’😅

This song is kind of special, because you can just pick a sentence of a suitable amount of syllables, and make as many verses as you want. The Johns have mentioned that it's not uncommon for it to end up with maybe sixty verses or more if there's a lot of people who want to lead a verse. The Longest Johns are a fantastic band, and a really lovely bunch of people too. I definitely recommend checking out more of their stuff.
