@@damianlozano5966 most of them brought it on themselves. Occasionally people get wrongly convicted. But it's rare. I think what you're talking about were the laws. They were more strict so people ended up being put to death for things that some may see as laughable today. But still, the law is the law. So if they knew the consequences and did the crime anyway then it's on them. I've been to jail numerous times. It took getting older to get it through my thick skull that it was my fault. Just as it often is in jail. Most people in there are guilty as sin. They just don't like being in jail for certain crimes. They feel that the punishment doesn't fit. But that's besides the point. The selfsame impetus for cruelty and violence in people is currently every-bit still in place; it was NO misadventure in reasoning, violence in people is an 'emotional' exercise. Our current practice in an alternative is VERY tenuous at-best. It will be interesting to see just how well some of these efforts with 'cerebral' intervention hold up. Another example of blinding in Bulgarian history is Vladimir Rasate. He was the son of Boris the first, who is the one who made Bulgaria into a Christian country. He didn't do it because he was a believer, but because he knew it would have good political impact. Unlike many rulers he didn't rule till death, but retired, leaving the throne to his son, Vladimir. But Vladimir didn't want his country to be Christian so he tried to bring to old religion back, which angered his father. Boris came back to the capital, dethroned Rasate, blinded him and imprisoned him. Boris them gave the throne to his younger son, Simeon.

The middle ages is a great example of how being "tough on crime" is ineffective when not well thought out.
@YouTubeViolates1A2 жыл бұрын
I don't think we should care how effective it is. To me, it's not about eradicating crime as much as it is about doing the right thing. I think home intruders should be tortured before death. They're crossing a line when they disturb the sense of security and intimacy that a home brings. Look at r*pists too. Do you really think jail time is enough? That right there is an example of how more modern efforts at reformation are just as futile. Fact is, we can't annihilate crime. Whether we try via brute force or with utter stupidity like these European countries that offer glorified 5 star hotels to reform hardened criminals. Like I said, we shouldn't bother eradicating crime. We should simply do the right thing by enacting and adequate level of punishment. Even if said punishment is draconian.

These people were truly psychopaths. This is why it's so important to not let psychopaths corrupt society, culminating in a downward spiral. It is also a cautionary tale on reconciling justice with humanity. A "tough on crime" mentality is a sensitive balancing act, and as appealing as it may be to let criminals "really have it", the truth is that innocent people get caught in the cross hairs of a flawed justice system all the time, and so it is important for punishment to reflect both the gravity of the crime and the degree of certainty about the offender's guilt.
@brized2 жыл бұрын
"Beyond a reasonable doubt" is the standard in criminal trials in the West for a reason.
@MayTheSchwartzBeWithYou2 жыл бұрын
@@brized Unfortunately, it is a somewhat vague and even cryptic idiom that many if not most people would fail to accurately articulate or define. After all, we know for a fact that innocent people can and have been wrongly convicted-some of them were even subjected to capital punishment. I think a tiered approach ought to be taken, in which there is a distinction between absolute certainty (witnesses, camera footage, and/or the "suspect" was apprehended at the scene of the crime) and "beyond a reasonable doubt" (when the jury has to deliberate about whether the defendant is actually guilty). A binary, black-and-white approach may be simpler but is not an ideal approach to justice, especially in the US justice system where third parties often have an incentive to prosecute, and even when the wrongly convicted is later proven innocent, those who knowingly worked to wrongly convict that innocent person face no repercussions.

on that times very few criminals where actually caught so people knew that their chances of getting away with their crimes where higher than the possibility of getting this kind of punishment. That's why you should put your effort in a good system of security rather than a cruel system of punishment. A few years ago I got hit on the tip of my pinky finger with a hockey puck that broke off my fingernail from the back. I definitely learned why pulling out fingernails is used as torture or punishment, one of the most painful things I've experienced for sure!

The narrator joyous voice fits well with the brutal treatment of criminals in the old days.

Is "A short, sharp shock" part of the British lexicon in terms because when the narrator said it, I remembered it from Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon.

'Blind Them' ! I have to say that sounds like the Perfect punishment for those who prey on and hurt children. It's Highly unlikely that they'd Ever do it again.

the blinding by basil was done specifically so that those blind men would become a burden on their country, having to take care of them and feed them.. as well as instill mass fear.

Some serious skill to take the skin off without damaging muscle. Literal skin walker. I'd be impressed if I could pull that off, especially if they survived.

It's amazing how little things have changed. Granted, you don't get killed for a "wrong" opinion, but you will get your life destroyed.. Especially if you are a person of any merit.

People have always been like this, from Witch hunts, Communist hunts etc. People like to persecute each other then look back on how wrong and dumb it was then do it all over again. People have never changed.

I don't understand this comment. How have things not changed dramatically in every conceivable way? Criminals get 3 hots and a cot... Nobody's getting their eyes plucked out...

Rulers . Rulers had never changed. Wait till the zero zoning comes, carbon credits come & Megacity walls would come up. Let’s see how many would be brave enough to hunt the masters deer.( I WISH that I was kidding).
