I actually looked this up because I was nervous to volunteer for the first time and wanted to hear an example of a good way to communicate. I was afraid I might describe things in a way that wouldn't be helpful, and wasn't sure if I should say hello or anything or just get right to it. Thank you for this!

Seriously! Your mobility training problem is solved. Teachers refused me because I live out in the country. Even with transportation. My answer at the time was Aira, a paid video service with the option of glasses. Using the phones’ a camera,I took the door to door bus and got into town around the gym. I learned where the grocery store and some restaurants. Be my eyes is going in this same advanced direction. You could do the Sam thing. I found the phone easier than the glasses! So happy for you! You can surprise Corey by having be my eyes take you shopping for a gift for her.

I gave a seminar to Israeli tour guides in training yesterday about hosting people challenged by a range of disabilities; having completed the Israeli licensed course to be sensitive to different needs. It was a Ministry of Tourism English language course, which enables citizens who are not Hebrew-speaking to learn and become guides. When I explained and demonstrated hosting blind or visually-impaired guests an Arab participant told the class about this app; and here the next morning I signed up to volunteer. I am very moved at the opportunity to be someone's eyes. Thank you for demonstrating it.

I just downloaded the App as a volunteer. My thought About bad volunteers is that if a user isn’t finding a volunteer to be helpful they could just end the call and call back to get a different volunteer. If you want to ask a potentially dangerous question like which medicine is which, call four times and make sure they all identify the meds the same. Just ideas.

I think you will absolutely love helping when you receive a call :-) thank you once again! I agree, if a volunteer is not helpful for the situation needed, we can always call back and talk to someone else. At one point, I called four different times in a row and got four different people each time. I think the likelihood of getting the same person more than once is probably unlikely. Thanks again for volunteering and for watching this video, I hope to connect with you further and get to know more about you. Have a great day, Matt

I will definitely be downloading this app. I thought you had a cane with you LOL. You were doing so well. I think it would be scary but comforting at the same time. I don’t like to travel alone at all so this would definitely help ease that fear a little bit I think.

Hi Jerry! No, I did not have a cane. It just my phone and Corey was near me somewhere recording all this on video. I was just walking, slowly, but still walking on my own. The person that was helping me was great. I have had a couple people who were not very helpful at all and kind of rude, but this person in particular was great! I’m so grateful to all of the volunteers on here who take the time out of their day to help us, it is so cool! I think you’ll find this app to be very helpful at times when it is needed. It’s not something that I use all the time, but when I do need it or want to use it, it is really nice to have! Thanks again for watching this :-) have a lovely day! Matt

I used to have this app back in the day and it never rang or anything and I was disappointed I wasn’t able to help anyone. My dad is blind so I thought it would be nice to be available for others who need a sighted person’s help. I recently downloaded it again, i still had access to my old account. However, nothing is happening at all now. In the “home” section, it’s blank and looks like something is trying to load. I can click on stories and read those and I can go to settings. But that’s it. So I’m not sure what is going on....

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to help someone who is blind or visually impaired. Actually, all of the people I have talk to you rarely get calls as well. Maybe one call every month or two at the most. There are a huge number of volunteers in relation to the number of blind people. Either way, it is the thought that counts so thank you so much for doing this! I’m not sure what is going on with the app, possibly try to delete it and re-download it or turn off your phone and turn it back on. Or maybe there is a pending update for the app. Just not sure, thanks again for being here, your support means a lot to me. Matt

In 2016 my 14 yearBe My Eyes. To deminstrate it she my sister and I FaceTime each other because neither of us had the app. I never wanted an iphone or any phone that had a touch screen. I'm too afraid of doing something wrong. Last year I bought the Blindshell Classic 2 phone and they added the Be My Eyes app to it. Both of my sisters signed up so they can help blind and visually impaired people. Today I signed up with Be My Eyes. Usually I ask a friend to help me but I thought I'd give Be My Eyes a try.

Maybe you can discuss some of the Strank’s in weakness is between each app and what each one offers. I think it would be very good coming from someone like you who uses both of the apps versus me who only uses Be My Eyes every so often. Hey Matt it's really good to see you out and about navigating however yes I will say you should have had your cane with you. I see someone else was with you. I would imagine the volunteers behind that app have to have pretty good vision and I would imagine that the camera on your phone has to be fairly decent I could barely tell that that was a bench when I was looking at it I had to zoom in with my magnifier on the phone. I was saying to myself what bench? One thing I could distinguish was she said you were on a sidewalk when you are actually on a jogging Trail and the street was right next to the trail and there was a strip of grass in between dividing the trail from the street. It's good to see that you have an iPhone I really love how accessibility works on iOS devices you know I have difficulty reading labels and ingredients in the grocery store I don't always have my magnification with me there are magnifier apps that I can put onto my phone however I find that they really drain my battery I wonder if I could use be my eyes at least just for that application. But anyway you have a great day you take care and good work keep it up your confidence will build and your Independence will greatly increase.

Good morning Sam! Thank you for all the encouragement, that is so nice of you. Yes I am not sure how she spotted the bench, but she did. It was a really cool experience to work with that person. I have called the volunteers on Be My Eyes a few times and they have been incredibly helpful and nice, it is just so great to have the ability to call somebody to get assistance in a matter of a minute or two. I don’t use the app all that often, but just knowing that it is there and available to me at my disposal is what matters. As for your question about using this app in the grocery store to read labels, I think that would definitely work. Maybe you will need to try it out sometime, but I think that would definitely help. It’s always so great to hear from you, I hope you’re having a great summer and doing well! I see this video and it gives me inspiration. Blind people need gyroscopic feedback from thier phone on at least one axes. To better capture /aim thier phone. I think blind people can develop visual perception through touch. Design a tight T shirt where the back and front of the T shirt, is made of a piezoelectric dot matrix. The blind person would wear a head ban with two small cameras front/back connected to a small processing module on the neck of the shirt. The processing module would translate deferential colours to deferential voltages to the piezoelectric dots. The more resolution, the better. Anyone can develop a visual perception out of dot pressure matrix. It doesn't take specialized training. I hope some engineers would read this , and put thier mind to the challenge.

Good morning Lenny! Yes, that app is very helpful and fun. I’m really glad to have it. Well, I was a little bit apprehensive walking around since she was guiding me through the camera on my phone and could easily missed something, not only that as a result of losing my vision, by default I typically walk with a little bit of hesitation unless I am with someone that I trust. There of just been way too many times that I have tripped on something, walked into something, or hit my face on something that I don’t really trust a whole lot of situations anymore. It’s a gray it’s a great app and I’m really glad to have it. I have connected with a couple great volunteers. Yes that date was very nice and sunny! We will be riding the bike again this weekend :-) have a great Friday Lenny, see you again soon :-) Matt

Hi, Matt! Great video! I myself have the Be My Eyes app, but I have not used it as if yet. However, I think it's a good app. The Specialty section of the app is for customer service with other companies. The companies partner with Be My Eyes in order to give their blind and visually impaired customers live support. The only companies I know that are in that section are Google and Microsoft Word. However, by now, there are probably more.

Hi my friend :-) so nice to hear from you again! It is awesome to hear that you have the Be My Eyes app, I think if you ever have the chance to use it you will be very happy and impressed. It also depends on who you get as a volunteer. Some of the people are very good, while others are not so good but generally I have had really good experiences. Thank you for the clarification on the special tea tab, that makes perfect sense. I appreciate you reaching out about this information. Thanks again for watching, as always, it is so nice to hear from you :-) have a great weekend, I look forward to talking to you again! Matt

Hi, Matt! No problem. If you need any information and I happen to have it, I will definitely provide it. I feel like this community is all about providing as much information as possible to one another. On an unrelated note, I have a question. I want to do some tags in my channel. Do you mind if I tag you? I plan to do the Disabilities Misconceptions Tag and the Blind/,,vi KZbinr Tag. Carrie tagged you in the second one, by the way.

Hi! I completely agree with you, this community is all about sharing information and resources to everybody so that we can be as independent as we possibly can with as much freedom as we can. It’s a great community and a lot of us share such valuable information. Yes, you’re absolutely welcome to take me in anyway that you want to. I have a question for you, please forgive me for my ignorance. And, before I ask, please do not take offense to this. May I ask, have you been blind your entire life? Are you totally blind? Based on your videos and what I remember about you, I think you are totally blind from what I recall. And possibly have been from birth or from a young age. Please correct me if I am wrong and once again, I hope that you do not take it offense to this. I am asking for a specific reason, because I’m wanting to find a couple people who are blind from a very young age or from birth and you were totally blind to do some type of collaboration videos with. There are so many questions out there that people have for others who are blind from birth and who are totally blind. I think it would be a very interesting collaboration video if you were at all interested. Thanks, I hope you’re having a great weekend! I’m excited to hear from you again :-) Matt

Hi, Matt! No worries. I take no offense to your question. I get asked this question all the time. Before, I was unwilling to answer it, but now I don't care. I think it's a valid question in certain circumstances. It truly depends on the person. For example, as I continue to learn, I feel that, if the person I encounter is showing me pity, I wouldn't answer. I've been blind since birth. I was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma when I was five months old. I had a tumor in one eye and I got surgery. However, the doctor or doctors (I don't know which) operated on the wrong eye, so the tumor spread. I got another operation, resulting in my complete blindness. Although the diagnosis was at five months, we usually say I was born blind. I never saw anything beforehand, so, most of the time, I don't go into the story. However, I'm more open to going into detail now. I don't mind telling my story to people. This, again, depends on the people. I would be interested in a colaboration. I think it would be awesome. It would actually be my very first one. What type of video would it be? Also, how would we do it? Would it be a video on each of our channels and mention it's a colaboration or would I send you a video and you guys will edit it and post in your channel? Would it be another way? If it's accessible, I'm all for it.

Good morning, thank you very much for sharing your story and more information about yourself. It is really fun getting to know more about you. I completely agree, since the surgery happened at such a young age, I think it is relevant to say that you were born blind. In other words, you do not have any recollection of what anything looks like prior to the surgery and the loss of vision. Again, please don’t take offense to anything I’m going to say which I don’t think you will, but I just want you to know that I’m asking these questions and making the suggestions as a way to learn more about you and help other people understand blindness. I’m just sharing my potential collaboration ideas as I get many of these questions but I’m on able to answer them. I’m sure you have heard many of these questions already. I have had numerous people ask me questions such as, what do blind people see when they dream? What does color look like it is up to a blind person? What does it look like to be blind? I’m sure you have heard all of these questions and know all of the common ones. I was thinking to be very interesting to make a video of you answering these questions. The reason I am not relevant to answer these questions is because I lived roughly the first 27 years of my life with relatively decent vision. So when I dream, I can still see vivid images from when I actually had vision earlier in my life. I also know what colors look like because I have seen them so even though my vision is very poor now, I can still visualize many of the things I’ve seen previously in my life. But I’ve been thinking about it and thought it would be very interesting to do a collaboration video with someone who has been blind from birth and who has no recollection of what something looks like from previous years. In the situation, you would be an excellent person for this video since you lost your vision at such a young age. Let me know your thoughts, how would you like to approach this, and is this something you would even be interested in doing? I think it would be very informative and educational for many people as there’s so much confusion and miss information regarding blindness. Let me know your thoughts and we will go from there. Thanks again, have a great Sunday it’s great to hear from you! Matt

Hey, can I ask how do you edit your videos? I would love to start a KZbin channel but I’m not sure how, I know most people use Macs but I don’t have one

Hi, thank you very much for watching this video and for reaching out to me with your question. Yes, we actually just edit the videos on our iPhones with iMovie. It is a free software that comes with an iPhone. I would highly recommend you start a KZbin channel. If there’s anything I can do to help answer any questions or be of assistance of any kind, please reach out to me and let me know, I will help in anyway I can :-) I hope this was helpful. Otherwise there is a lot of editing software out there that a person can use, we just use iMovie which is basic, but it gets the job done. Thank you again :-) Matt

I saw this app just for the first time today.. Great idea and features.. I am looking for something like this for my 86 year old blind farther. We are from SOUTH AFRICA Afrikaans speaking and good bilingual. My question is. he does not have a smartphone because of his blindness just using a button type phone. How easy is it to get into the apps and open it if we do get him a phone.. any experience with beginners would be great

She should have had you continue down the same path and it would have led you to that same bench. If she would have had you not only pan your camera to the left but had you bring your camera back to your center position and have you tip it slightly downwards and pan like you did before she would have been able to see that pathway better.

It is just so cool that you take time out of your busy day to be there for someone who is blind or visually impaired and need some assistance. I hope you are able to get a call sometime soon and have a great interaction with that person. Thanks again, I would love to hear how it goes if you were comfortable sharing after you have your call. Hi, that would be very cool if you were my volunteer! That would be so cool. I think he will love the interaction once you’re able to connect with somebody. I just want you to recognize that it could be a few weeks or maybe even a month until you get a call. From the people I have talked to you, many of them have said they don’t get all that many calls and it is usually only about one every few weeks or month. I do not want you to be discouraged, but just letting you know. Thanks again for being a volunteer, and I really appreciate your support here on this channel :-)

It’s really cool to have the ability for the agent to look through the camera now. That is an awesome feature and app. However, I could see how many people could possibly abuse this by calling and just talking to people because they are bored and lonely. Overall, it’s a great app and has helped me a lot so far. Thanks again, Matt
