I agree with this, except that Russia is already a totalitarian fascist state ruled by the dictator Putin. Putin does not care about international law, but his own nationalist obsessions in trying to recreate the Soviet Union, by force if possible, where Ukraine is an old and important component of it in Putin's eyes. But according to many people in Ukraine, they want nothing to do with Russia. In so doing his war there, Putin engages in lawless acts of bombing and killing civilians in Ukraine, so he certainty does not care if China engages the Philippines with hostility.

I think there is a strong chance that Russia (Putin) has already started the opening skirmish of WW3. But it might only get called WW3 when China openly ignores the US threat, and continues fuelling Russia's military effort against Ukraine. Be patient. Loose lips, sink ships. China knows better than to hit population centers. All that does is pull involve all of our allies and China is NOT that powerful. The Philippines has a ton of Chinese here and they are not playing with crayons. The Philippines and the USA are well aware that China would love to stage a coup. If I may commiserate with you for a moment. What I personally wish the USA would do, is fix your power and water infrastructure. The Philippines is VERY rich but NO ONE wants to spoil the beauty of this country, so everything has to go so super slow. 7400 plus islands. Crazy difficult to do. If it were only that simple. Russia solves two of China's BIGGEST equations. Importing oil and gas, and agriculture, lumber and such goods from Russia. They work like a barter with Russia. China gets resources that can't be cut off globally, and in turn manufacture goods to Russia. No good alternative for China. Cut off local trade that can't be stopped by third party actors, or accept foreign trade resources that are more expensive and can be stopped in a heart beat. YOU BET China is worried. Either way is not good for China. ( a cornered rat will always strike out with no option of escape). Not calling China a rat, just using an analogy. Japan chose the same action in WWII. For China to be secure in global importing and exporting, they must control the Philippines. ALL country's defense departments are aware of this. With out the US, the Philippines would be absorbed by China, they would have no other choice. Remember how badly Japan wanted the Phils?? Mainly the same reasons. The Philippines is in the center of Asia and with untapped resources, geography is against their security.
