“Operation Iraqi freedom” was the saintly title for the brutal invasion of Iraq. “Operation unified protector” was the angelic name for the destruction of Libya. “Operation enduring freedom” was the virtuous name given to the unjust invasion of Afghanistan. All in the name of "freedom and democracy".

I live in Fresno County, and the county charter only mentions property insofar as “the county controls county property”, and based on the State and US constitution, eminent domain allows for what Anya mentions about 1/3 of the way through this stream. Fresno County, and the Valley broadly, produces literally 80% of the world’s/country’s nut supplies and about over half of the country’s fruits and meat.

it irks me that Anya talks about how the US is propping up the EU military wise. She's totally missing the point that not only is the military industrial complex rinsing American taxpayers, but so are all the other complexes; the pharmaceutical, big-ag, prison, etc etc..... the problem with the EU elite is no different to the problem with the US elite & in actual fact EU (& down here in Australasia & across the rest of the "free" (guffaw) world) elites outside of the states are walking the thin line between lining their own pockets while giving sufficient support to the US empire to not get sanctioned. No one needs the military they have - especially to support the "war on terror", when the US are the biggest creators of it, & China, North Korea, Iran, & Russia because of their human rights abuses that are in reality are not as bad as the US empire's. Her point is so woefully short sighted despite the fumbled save. It deeply pains me to have to say it, Sorry.

I don't think logistically that would work because almost nobody would watch that which means that the events would lose money more than gain money, that's bad business in general regardless of economic model. I think maybe smaller level competitions for trans people that are more localized could in theory work (they would have a similar logistical problem but it would likely be manageable depending where it is) but I am not sure if in practice it would. Obviously distance running like road races don't have to worry about that since men and women already compete in it (but even then, you can't have men going up against women records just because they are "trans") so trans people probably should be allowed there. Plus sports have been largely infected with corporate corrupt bullshit honestly. This might just be my opinion but I have more fun doing sports than watching them anyways so I don't have much skin in that game of professional sports myself.

"America" is NOT the name of one single country but that of a huge continent. Maybe once U.S.A. finally ceases to be the world´s main superpower, people might go back to using the word "America" in its original and true meaning. Christopher Columbus came to America for the first time in October 1492 and he later sailed back over here on three more occasions. On NONE of those FOUR trips did Columbus ever set foot on what is now US territory. Let me reiterate this: Columbus discovered America, came back to America three more times, and never ever was in what is now USA. Then, Europeans gave this new CONTINENT a name: "America". Now..., what does this tell you about the real meaning of the name "America"? Did Columbus "discover America" without ever setting foot in America or is America the name of a huge and diverse continent, of which U.S.A. is only ONE of its many countries?

I fucking hate the argument - which Anya here uncritically regurgitates and which has become very prevalent in the post duopoly space - that country X can have ''socialism'' because America is funding them/their military. Publicly/collectively financing certain services (such as healthcare) is much more efficient than financing them privately/individually. It pays for itself, it does not need external financial support (we all know the math for M4All from the Bernie campaign). The same goes for transport. A transport system based on mass/collective transit (trains, buses) is much more efficient than one focused on individual vehicles (cars). Multi story buildings (apartments) are a much more efficient way to provide housing to people than endless rows of suburban single family homes. Etc. So please stop with this argument.

The point is that with all this extra money from the US they can fund social programs. There are books that go over how Europe can afford it because of the US. The US needs to prioritize itself more is the issue. But then if they cut off all the money and the savings then we'd see how all those other countries really run.

Wow, how disappointing by Anya. First the corny pan-American nationalism ("Venezuela and US should be bestest friends"), but more sinisterly, she is indirectly advocating increased military spending in Europe, which DD should obviously have pushed hard from a pacifist point of view. However, when it gets really, really bad is when she claims Europe's welfare states as indirectly sponsored by the US high military spending. The insane amount European states spend on welfare (15-30% GDP) dwarves the US-Europe disparity in relative military spending (2% diff GDP). She just didnt do the math at all. And you wrote a book Priya? Moreover, the extreme indirect costs in Europe of US involvement in the Middle East, especially the illegal Iraq invasion, which many people (including Putin) claim indirectly caused the Ukraine invasion, but also ISIS and the terror wave. The US is "paying for our welfare"? Is that some kind of joke? In summary, she is advocating pan-American nationalism, increased military spending and says the EU social democratic welfare model is unrealistic unless sponsored by the US. Kinda fascisty. Disappointing by DD to say the least. Considering cutting the sub.

it sounds like you're making a lot of inferences and assumptions. how is she 'indirectly' advocating for increasing military spending? by saying US shouldn't be funding it or NATO? they shouldn't. whether europe then has to increase its military spending is up to them. i don't know the economics of europe's welfare state so i can concede they do most the spending but i bet there's a lot more to US Europe relations than just military aid that makes it worth it for the European elites. again not an economics guy but their hybrid capitalist welfare model seems unsustainable, as opposed to say china which has central planning of economy and doesn't have to deal with the whims of US empire. going along with bombing of a pipeline that SEVERELY harmed their economy, shutting down power plants and following a green agenda that isn't even close to being able to replace previous power sources. shooting themselves in the foot over and over because of their idealogical ties to the west. in totality the relations with US have been very detrimental to europe. and policy about surrounding russia with US satellite puppets and pushing NATO eastward was in the works way before iraq invasion...which much of europe took part in, same with libya...are you trying to absolve EU complicity? and just simply wishing that the US doesn't completely crumble and if we expel the leeches controlling it, that at least hypothetically and ideally we could be trading partners with countries we once took advantage of...that's just a hopeful idea that makes sense for a patriotic american to believe in. rather than to wallow in doom or to flee the country. to call that sinister is really suspect on your part. reading between the lines of your post it sounds like you are an accelerationist, you don't want the US to reform and become a more reasonable world partner, you prefer the status quo and military aid to continue to europe and those who oppose this must be "fascisty" which kinda sounds "fedy" using such words that trigger leftists to smear. i'm sure i'm off just making the same bad faith assumptions as you made of anya.

@@russianpaul77 In short, Anya says Europe is prosperous because it is friends with the US. She wants other friends for the US that fit her social circles. She is clearly sketching out a zero sum game between welfare and military spending, and argues for a minimum amount of military. This is very obvious from her argument. In short, this isn't the utopia you are looking for. And yes, "fascist" is appropriate for this kind of ingroup/outgroup bullshit. Deal with it.
