All the fault lies by the company that programmed and built the bot. No? I thought so.

SPOILER My sole question isn't how Blinky overpowered a bratty (though he did have an unfortunate upbringing) child, it's how he was able to kill both cops. The ending leads me to believe he killed the police officers, but this takes place in the future so wouldn't two well-armed and trained cops be able to overpower one butler robot? I liked this movie (made me feel bad for the robot, then scared of it) but the last few seconds of the ending made no sense... unless they were a flashback to when Blinky killed the kid.

xavier herrera Plenty of people have it way worse and behave much better. Obviously, everyone's different and the kid didn't deserve it since he'd probably grow out of all of that. He'd also probably be told better ways to deal with his frustrations than lashing out at others. This also brings up the question of "should sentient robots be considered lifeforms and be granted rights like every other living thing" that is very prevalent in sci-fi. If the answer is yes, then he was being treated like shit and was created for the sole purpose of being used and abused which is against various laws. If the answer is no, then at what point do we draw the line for what we can and cannot abuse. And the robot missed firmware updates and wasn't taken to the shop, both of which were advised. The real question is, why would a robot that missed firmware updates and testing find murder an acceptable directive? The answer, because plot.

Hau Tak Leighton Tam Not necessarily. The kid gave him a bunch of conflicting commands while talking about killing his family and the mom talking about Blinkie cleaning and cooking the kid if he makes another mess while he stands there glitching, then they did a hard reset on him. They've also issued a product recall. Blinkie was certainly programmed not to kill, but it's heavily implied Blinkie was defective...
@hautakleightontam7719 жыл бұрын
Bill Casey You make good points, but the fact remains that Blinky wasn't just lethal; it was actively (and independently!) malevolent. How else can you explain its relish in getting to kill a kid, then pulling a Hannibal Lecter on his parents, even though it was supposedly 'just following orders'? Hell, a T-1000 is less cruel and more obedient compared to this abomination, if only because of its ruthless efficiency and relative lack of ego. Thus, my point; just what kind of 'malfunction' could have fundamentally rewritten a simple robot's programming to make it a sociopath, unless the potential for cruelty was always there?
@billcasey34929 жыл бұрын
Hau Tak Leighton Tam Meatballs have no relish. Blinkie reacts the same to all of its tasks. Blinkie has no emotional range. It doesn't relish killing, cleaning and killing the kid any more than it relishes standing in the rain counting down from a million or killing the dog. It's not a very strong AI. Its tasks when glitching out were staying put, cleaning, killing the kid, killing everyone, killing the parents, killing the dog, cleaning and cooking the kid if he makes another mess, and counting down.
@hautakleightontam7719 жыл бұрын
Bill Casey 'Ready or not, here I come!', while holding a sharp knife. 'I cleaned him and cooked him for dinner. You're eating him! Did I do good?' Does this sound like an impartial servant to you? And besides, it still doesn't explain why he went the extra mile in making the parents eat their own child, right before he killed them as well!
@billcasey34929 жыл бұрын
Hau Tak Leighton Tam "Ready or not here I come" is from the counting, which was going on during the glitching out. "Did I do good?" is what Blinkie asks after completing a task. The Mother earlier on during Blinkie glitching out: "If you make another mess like that, I will have Blinkie clean and cook you for dinner." It's extremely clunky dialogue, and so is the kid telling Blinkie to kill everyone, but it's clear those clunky bits of dialogue and that whole glitch out scene during the clunky dialogue is there specifically to set up why Blinkie does what it does... It's interesting what causes the glitch out is two simultaneous conflicting orders from a human, which causes Blinky to violate the laws of robotics no matter what it does...
@shyguyrocks18 жыл бұрын
Tfw you realize Blinky kept asking the kid to play a game and if he had said "Yes" this all would've been avoided. Instead, every time Blinky asked if Alex wanted to play a game, Alex said no and kept pushing him away, blaming him for things he didn't do, and even so much as to both verbally and now PHYSICALLY abuse Blinky. All the kid had to do was just tell Blinky to do something else and he would've gladly done it. He could've told Blinky not to follow the order of killing everyone, him, his dog, or his parents and it would've been solved. There was so much this kid could've done to avoid this at really ANY time. The robot even gave the kid time to rethink his order. That's what the insisting of playing a game and counting down was. Blinky, while having no emotions, was probably programmed with the Three Laws of Robotics, but since the kid told him he had to obey EVERYTHING he said, that effectively malfunctioned the robot and the rebooting was symbolic of the fact that it wasn't just a physical reboot, it was an entire REPROGRAMMING to the robots systems. It got rid of everything it knew of it's so-called "Morals" and replaced them with one of his master's orders in order to not be seen as a failure. That's how I saw it, at least.
@markkroberger7398 жыл бұрын
That is true. The problem, is that somewhere along the story, Blinky began to malfunction, and a simple 'reboot' didn't fix the problem, as it seems mutable 'commands' got jumbled together (he's still playing a game and counting, while following the command to 'clean and cook Alex for dinner'). The 3 laws of robotics do not apply to a malfunctioning robot. I would like to see this done as a fully theatrical film. Maybe take this film, and extend it to go deeper into Alex's life, which we could see him being 'bullied' at school, which along with seeing his parents fighting constantly, lead Alex to the reasons why he treated Blinky badly. A second film could show a large problem develop, as more 'Blinky' robots suffer the same malfunction problems, and recalls are made to not fix the problems, but to destroy all models of the same type....of course, this 'has' been seen before, in the Animatrix (The Second Renaissance Parts 1 & 2).
@Nif-kun8 жыл бұрын
It doesn't apply to all robots. They're all programmed uniquely and differently. If by chance, Blinky had a program to kill or "protect" the owner from physical threat. It would be usable as an order to do such things, even if it includes harming (or killing) the owner, as it is an order.

Mark Kroberger Right before Blinky goes to the kitchen near the end, the tv even says Blinky needs regular maintenance and updating. I doubt the kid would do that and based on the scenes the parents are in I bet they neglected to do it either. This, plus the rain, led to Blinky malfunctioning and for some reason only caching "murder everyone" and "clean and cook [son] for dinner" along with the 'do hide-and-seek after 999,999 seconds' countdown, except now it was for the much darker commands rather than just playing hide-and-seek... Somehow hide-and-seek got overwritten by the murder commands when it malfunctioned.

To everyone that says it's the kid's fault. This is how the cycle of abuse perpetuates and grows. The kid was in a situation he had no way to help or control. THe kid was angry. It only got worse instead of getting better and eventually his treatment of Blinky caused him to grow worse.
@mangaas5 жыл бұрын
It's not a cycle of abuse. It's personality types. Kids with loving parents grow up to be abusive, while other children with abusive parents grow up to be the opposite. Even when he was treating him badly, Blinky seemed pretty nice to him. So Blinky wouldn't be sad that he can't play at the moment. That kid is just a jerk. Also, he's an idiot, because by now he should understand that Blinky does EVERYTHING he says.

Honestly I'm on blinkys side, I thought he was cute, he had a cute voice, and I liked his funny personality. The kid could have just asked blinky to study marriage and talk to the parents, I'm sure he would have done it with no problem.

I see this as a tragic villain backstory more than anything. Blinky was just a normal companion robot trying his best to please his masters, only to be driven to insanity after that kid took his anger out on Blinky and pushed the robot too far.

This film is so genuinely well made! I watch it every 2-3 years when I try to find new killer-robot type short film kind of thing, we can see on the news at 0:20 that the year is supposed to be 2022 and while I believe it will take us at least till 2032 to get to something like this and yet it's 2024 already, AI is trending as never before, alas I'm still failing to find something even remotely as good as this 10+ year masterpiece on killer AI robot thematic. Really wish that film would get a few million views, one of the most underrated videos I know
@qwer58j9 жыл бұрын
I would have been nicer to the robot. Poor robot :( This is a realistic scenario within the context of these robot servants existing. I guarantee if we did have robot servants like this some people would treat them reasonable and some people would treat them better than themselves like some pet owners while others would be absolutely abusive like this kid or worse.
@JL-dance8 жыл бұрын
yeah this is exacly why asimov's law exists: ''A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law''
@Her_Sisko8 жыл бұрын
Yeah but we see it malfunction in the rain, so it could have bypassed the laws or he could have "lost" that coding through short circuits and damage over time.
@aladrew078 жыл бұрын
I feel like that was not malfunctioning, it was him trying to accept all the orders he was given.
@JL-dance8 жыл бұрын
aladrew07 well if he was well programmed and this wasnt just a video to scare people, the robot would of just reset when he was RESETED, or he would of just killed the hole family without being all creepy and shit, like a real robot that has no emotions would do
@singletona0828 жыл бұрын
Nope. the three laws of robotics exist to show why a set of rigid immutable laws that do not take context into consideration are horrible as proven by every robot story asimov ever did.
@JL-dance8 жыл бұрын
Andrew Singleton yeah but come on in this video they could of at least shown that the robot had some sort of failsafe because all i'm seeing is a robot thats gonna kill your parents simply by asking it to do so

I watched this as a project for my film class when I was about 15. 1080p screen, 4k resolution and a quality audio system with top-of-the-range headphones. Scared me shitless. I still can't bring myself to watch it years later, I paused the video to type this comment the nanosecond it started and you better believe I'm not hitting the play button.

It's a tonal thing. Yeah, we KNOW what he did, but we also know his design and personality, and the two ALREADY don't jibe. You need that ending stinger to kind of reconcile the two, number one-- and secondly it just gives you that whiplash kick that good short horror is supposed to have. It's SUPPPSED to twist the mood even more, that's why it's THERE.

The mother says "If you make a mess like that again I will make Blinky clean and cook YOU for dinner" so Blinky may have overheard while glitching in the rain, and when the kid spilled juice in the living room, Blinky followed his instructions.

ok, so kid wants his parents to stop fighting and to be a family again so he asks for a blinky, but after a while he sees that having blinky around isnt helping bring his family any closer so he takes out his anger on blinky, which would be sad for the robot if it had been programmed emotions, but he wasnt and it only angered the kid more... in the end blinky followed the orders, killing anyone...all i can think is "This is what happens when there is false advertisement, blinky i am so unsatisfied with my care"

*SPOILERS* I remember watching Blinky in my freshman year high school film class. It was absolutely excellent and my teacher especially loved it. I remember how sick I felt after learning that Blinky had "cleaned him and cooked him for dinner." My friends tormented me with that line for weeks afterward. One gripe I have with this fantastic short film, however, is the end scene where Blinky is shown killing the police officers with blood splattering on his face. This is one of those cases where showing less is more, and my film teacher made a point of that by pausing the film when the door was shut at the end. He wouldn't show us the ending because he felt that it, in a way, ruined the rest of the film, being far too "on the nose" and provided too cheap of a scare. Coming back today, never before seeing the scene that was described to us by my teacher, I have to say that I'm inclined to agree. My criticisms aside, I do quite love this film and commend the writer/director, despite (what I consider personally) the unnecessary ending. Keep up the great work!
