Short Panatela Cigar, Roller's POV

I bunch and wrap a short panatela cigar (5.5 x 34). The closest standard-issue cigar I find to this size is the Cuban Bolivar No 3, which is 4 7/8 x 34. They call this vitola "placeras," pleasurable, and I agree with this vitola name. The ones I roll have half an inch more pleasure, that's all.
I don't really have a casquillo (cap cutter) that fits this size, but I aim to procure one soonish.

I remember years ago getting some variety of nictotina rustica seeds and growing a small batch of tobacco as a project. It was amazing to see. Not quite how I expected. Even as a totally unexperienced grower I was able to end up with something. I didn't end up with alot. Only had a handful of plants. Couldn't quite get the curing to work right for some reason. Even still it was a grounding experience to inhale the fruits of my labors. One thing I learned......that variety was suuuuuuuper strong. Got nicotine spins after 1 puff. Later learned....it's usually mixed with another variety hahah. Great video friend.

To be honest, I had zero clue what I was doing (I grew them in a very large raised bed, the same way I grew all my vegetables) and didn't really treat them differently then say lettuce or cabbage and they grew amazingly. Prolly wasn't amazing quality by most standards but it was fun, easy, and lot more potent than I anticipated (at the time I was a pack plus a day smoker). Weekly tending but yeah....bout it. I'm sure you could easily Google or find vids on utube that would give muuuuuch better advice than I since I just winged it. I figured my seeds were bad as they were very old so I tossed a couple handfuls in the bed and shortly there after had a sea of sprouts. Each week I'd thin a 1/4 of em away till just the most vigorous were left in about 1ft sectors.

About $5 for 1 stick is about as cheap as they go for and still be made with whole leaf and made well. A lot are around the $10 range for 1 cigar. $20 is high end stuff. The most expensive 1 that a tobacconist showed me was $50 for 1 stick. He said he couldn't relax and enjoy the $50 cigar because it's literally money going up in smokes. Cigars that cost with $1 or $2 each are made with shredded up leftover leaf that you can see the roller leaving behind here. I tried them. They're very bland and hard to draw smoke in because of how tightly packed shredded leaves can get. Not really worth the hour or so it takes to smoke unless you're addicted and just need something to smoke.

@@BlissCigarCo a lot are of Spanish and Cuban descent, immigrants fleeing a life of hardship to start anew in the United States of America. When the weathers nice I always see their little walk up wooden booths displaying fantastic assortments of just about anything you could imagine. The sweet and nutty, spicy and peppery aromas of fermented tobacco creating such a serene atmosphere wafting down the streets. I always loved seeing the culebras of varying flavors. And I never strayed away from a nice light bodied corona, I also love panatelas and churchills to the classic torpedo styled smoke. And I must say Claros are definitely my top pick!

But in 30 years of smoking I have drifted toward enjoying a quality maduro smoke as much or more than a CT shade.

I'm soon 84. Had to give up my Fuente and Upmann cigars 20 years ago. However, if I find a guy smoking a quality cigar I follow him around downwind like a bloodhound. I once smelled a fresh tobacco plant in an indoor garden. Later, I learned about the incredible processes humans have learned to cure and stabilize this product. Very interesting. I grew tobacco last year and dried some. It's nice to see what dried tobacco is supposed to look like and how it can be made into a cigar. Mine was way to brittle, no way I could have rolled it into a cigar without it breaking into pieces. And even if I had dried the leaves properly, rolling them properly would take a while to learn. I was able to smoke some from a pipe, but I'm not much of a smoker so most of it is just lying in the pantry.

@@BlissCigarCo If I recall correctly, the seeds were labelled as "Virginia Smoking Tobacco". I'm not sure if that's a specific variety or more of a marketing term. The plants got about as tall as a man and developed pink trumpet flowers but I get the feeling that doesn't narrow it down any. I hanged the leaves from the ceiling in my basement to dry out but I think they dried out too fast and thus became crumbly. The first batch of leaves were a bit yellow already when I harvested them. The second batch I picked while green since we got an early October frost. I did not cut off the tops of the plants when they started producing flowers and then seed pods as some sources suggest for encouraging more leaf growth, since I already had more leaves than I will personally use in several years.

@@robertdeckard2136 Yeah I think Virginia is a type. It's definitely a cig tobacco, tho, not cigar. Sounds like your first crop did have some issues. Tobacco is picked green, then cured in the shed to yellow/brown, then, in the case of cigar tobacco, fermented. I think maybe cig tobacco like VA isn't fermented, tho. Just cured.

@@BlissCigarCo Virginia blends are also used in pipe tobacco. They can be fermented to bring out additional flavors, or you can leave the blend in a tin or mason jar to age it to bring out flavors.

I smoke a cigar back then and i couldnt forget the feeling of it. It was different from the rest. It smell like perfume and when you puff, it makes this popping sound. It was not canabis since it had no effect on me. It just felt very relaxing when i smoked it in my friends porch on a rainy night while drinking cofee. I just didnt know what it was.

Get into Thai (tie, because you do actually tie them up) sticks man, it's essentially the og cigar art form of cannabis. But it's definitely the complete opposite of fast production, it's a bit tedious and time consuming particularly the three month aging process of the sticks. They're a bit less heartbreaking to attempt if you live in a legal medical or recreational state, since it's affordable and abundant and you more than likely can also grow your own to produce the fan leaves needed for rolling.

Thanks. Yeah, the tripa (filler) and capa (wrapper) are totally different varieties of leaf that have been grown and handled in very different fashions on the long road from seed to cigar. The molding smooths out the surface to help make it pretty and also sets and balanced the correct internal pressure of the bunch.
