*AS A TAILOR* can I just point out that coats are super profitable - they are REALLY easy to make - I just made a raglan sleeve full length in 50/50 wool/nylon tartan - it took less than a week! 3m of fabric, lining, 5 buttons, 1 buckle, no canvas, no difficult shaping or pad stitching. People's image of coats is completely at odds with the actual complexity and quantity of fabric involved. EDIT - there is MORE fabric in a suit than a full length overcoat...!

What do you mean by no canvas?
@piccalillipit9211
@piccalillipit9211 Жыл бұрын
@@mara23ification Inside a suit jacket there are several layers of canvas - linen canvas and horse hair canvas - that give the jacket its structure and shape. This is kind of the chassis of the jacket and the fabric you SEE [the fashion fabric] is like the body panels on the car. This is expensive material and there is a LOT of work "pad stitching" the shape into the canvas, we literally stick the 3D shape of your body into the canvas. It takes nearly as long to make a pair of canvases as it did to make that coat. 90% of the work in a bespoke suit goes into things you will never see, its all under the surface.

So, what about a coat in the same construction as sports jackets?
@piccalillipit9211
@piccalillipit9211 Жыл бұрын
@@karlenglewood8940 I just wrote a really detained answer and it didnt post - so forgive me if I summarise. An over coat would not be made in the same way as a sports jacket but a fitted 3/4 coat would be. I made one just before Christmas for myself - it took about 150 hours. This is a more historical item of clothing, I make mens historical clothes 1890 to 1940. A high quality more formal overcoat might have a single canvas at the front for body and for hanging the pockets from so they dont stretch the fabric, but it would not be shaped.

Huge ditto on this one. Smoky Glow does a round of fashion websites looking at their non-clothing selections and just about dies of sticker shock every time. It's funny but you can also see what the brand is trying to do, either in terms of making small items available to a wider market or blinging out someone's life in the brand in question

As for water resistant wool coats, the ones from Brunello Cucinelli and Loro Piana are superexpensive, but British brand Mackintosh make coats like these (in "specifications" the fabric is called "loro piana storm system", since loro piana produce the fabric), great quality, good look, price point slightly lower than Burberry coats.

@macheifach

Also great topic for a video would be: Under what circumstances are the prices justifiable? Of course, material quality and blend is a factor for the price as is the manufacturing process. I also see the accumulated experience of a designer, that goes into a piece as a justifiable factor for the price (similar, as if you pay an beginner photographer a lot less for the same amount of pictures than an professional with 30 years of experience) but at which point is a price not justifiable anymore?
@mrPlayAndSay
@mrPlayAndSay Жыл бұрын
I guess it would have 2 viewpoints. From the designer: as long as someone is willing to pay that price, it is justifiable. As a consumer: As long as it is worth it to you. For example if I see an amazing looking piece, but I see it is made from polyester (and it wouldn't give the product a real benefit like a jacket using it to be more water resistent), even 100€ don't seem worth it to me. But if it is a unique, well crafted piece made from cotton, silk, leather or cashmere I am willing to spend multiple hundred € on a single piece. But that's just my take on it.

Hey Bliss, usually high performance skis (for racing) cost around 1100$ CAN. Different type of skis will cost more or less but that is generally what it will cost. These Zegna skiis are crazy overpriced but it seems like they collaborated with ski brand Zai, which uses different materials than what I'm used to seeing. I love skiing, love your videos too :))

Luxury retail prices are not even logically justifiable. Especially haute couture runaway pieces, handmade, etc. An haute couture shirt (SHIRT!) from let's say Chanel atelier (basically bespoke piece) would be in 45000 euros. Not even a joke. I've just accepted the fact that this is some kind of completely parallel reality to the one I live in lol. Made in Japan can be pricey, but not necessarily outlandishly expensive. Like for example moonstar and shoes like pottery canvas sneakers (2 brands producing in the same factory in Japan), the sell in retail for similar price to CDGxconverse. So a bit more then a regular converse, still, reasonable for the quality. Etc, etc.

There was no one around to stop me from touching it or trying it on. The price tag was $110,000. I wish I remembered who was the designer. May be Ralph Rucci, but I cannot be sure. UNPOPULAR QUESTION: What do you think about the fashion industry's obsession with and appropriating Native American art and textiles? There's such a long list of it. I'm alaskan native, east coast Native and Caribbean and have seen it happen especially in southwest culture. Some examples are the Jeremy Scott × Addisas international line that stole artwork from my tribe in southeast Alaska and the most recent controversy of Pharrell's continued use of plains and southwest esthetics in his personal style and the recent LV show. Another example is Ralph Lauren's appropriation of the Cowichan wool Sweater of Vancouver Island native cultures.

But so much of this is more about extreme displays of wealth while SACRIFICING the quality and style. I guess high fashion is for people who hate clothes? And want to use it for clout instead of comfort / style / elegance.
