Before and during World War II, Germany's Nazi Party condemned drug use. But the book, "Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich," claims German soldiers were often high on methamphetamine issued by their commanders to enhance their endurance. Nazi leader Adolf Hitler himself was a substance abuser. Author Norman Ohler joins "CBS This Morning: Saturday" to discuss his book.

This is Simply not true, if you read medical literature you will see they used them for a range of things just like today, these medicines weren’t new at this stage, but using for soldiers might be where you confused it. But yes they would also use for performance, but not in the method you’d think, meth was available to the public, it’s purpose was misused as many were.

The army which used much more drugs than any other was Finnish Army. 250 million 5 mg pills of 100% pure heroin and morphine (mostly heroin) during 1941-44. Finns also continued using German Pervitin after Germans abandoned it (mostly). After the war e.g in 1948 Finland used 18% of world's prescription legal heroin.

This same thing surfaces now and then and is repeatedly reported like it's some new information that someone has just dug up. Personally I remember first time I heard of this, or specifically Hitlers personal drug use (administered by his personal doctor although it began without Hitler's knowledge) was in the late 90's, and of methamphetamine use by soldiers (and lonely housewives, it was used in frigging chocolate confectionery!!) by early 2000's at furthest. Also, I really have no idea how long this information has been easily in reach of general public, if they were interested to know. Nowadays I'm actually surprised of people still not knowing about this!
@pluckybellhop66
@pluckybellhop66 Жыл бұрын
I'm not surprised to only just be finding out about it, no way they were going to teach us that in school, wouldn't want us to actually understand the world. People have no idea how destructive meth is or who literally moves it for world shaping kind of money. People like Min Aung Hlaing make el Chapo look like a dime sack street dealer. I also know that information won't make it into a history book.

Methamphetamine wasn’t “a German creation”, the first synthesis of methamphetamine has been done by Nagai, from ephedrine, in 1893. Later in 1919 methamphetamine hydrochloride has been crystallized in its pure form by Akira Ogata.

cocaine comes from the coca plant, indigenous to the South Murrica zone. One could imagine it has been used and abused since the dawn of humanity. Drugs abuse is just societys desperate way of attempting to cope with certain ugly realities of life. An interesting aspect of drug abuse is that once the stressful stimuli is removed from the consumers life (war, toxic relation, homelessness) most of them stop abusing it because of their association of the drug with that certain stressful situation.

Even the Finnish army had Pervitin, but really, the methamphetamine use in Germany - and not only by the army, even housewives took amphetamines (usually in form of chocolate) - was pretty much one of a kind in the scale they used it. Also Hitler's personal use is a point of interest and is a significant part of history, because of how much it would had to affect his decisions, especially in the later half of his reign.

It CAN lower said inhibitions but it doesn't cause it in everyone. Methamphetamine is used by over 40 MILLION people a year worldwide. Most abusers of the drug simply do harm to themselves and less to others. If it was a drug that simply just made people "evil" then that's enough people we'd have mass assaults and murders in insane numbers everywhere.
