This is a major sign that a game company is now being run by career businessmen/sales and marketing types, rather than passionate gamers. Once a company gets to a certain size, people start getting promoted based on metrics that have nothing to do with product quality or innovation.

I'm certain it has to do with inter company publicity. People who don't know much if anything about game design start to lead companies because they are seen much more by leadership, and are therefore much more likely to be picked for promotions.

Or more likely they are trying to appeal to two different audiances and appealing to no one. Nah, it's because marketing and business tends to assume that anything can be brute forced through if only the right "buttons" are pushed in the right order. They are trying to find the right ones while not changing their core strategy or goals. They think they have all the power because they own the games and the services they run on. They think Diablo 4 is a sure fire thing that people will play no matter what because it's Diablo and there is no other Diablo on the market, IE they think like someone with a monopoly. However they fail to appreciate that Diablo 4 is not a monopoly, it has many other games it is competing against, both in its genre and in general. The key to understanding modern AAA is to understand that the publishers and studios have convinced themselves that AAA games and AAA IPs sell no matter what, so they think they can do anything and retain the core market regardless. Again they are thinking like monopolies rather than savvy businesses trying to compete in a larger market.

But On June 6, 2023, Blizzard Entertainment announced that Diablo IV became the fastest-selling game in Blizzard Entertainment's history.[85] Diablo IV generated $666 million in revenue within the first five days after launch.[86] Diablo IV reached 12 million players by August 2023.[87] The PlayStation 5 version of Diablo IV was the second bestselling retail game during its first week of release in Japan, with 24,375 physical units being sold. The PlayStation 4 version sold 8,524 units in Japan throughout the week and was ranked at number five on the weekly all-format video game sales chart. The state of d4 arm kind of reminds me of a rave i went to once. They spent thousands of dollars on advertising but it was the worst lineup anyone had ever seen. Additionally, The rave was split into 2 parts, a daytime concert in a small town ampitheater and then a nighttime rave in a large city after. Tickets were 3x the price of other similar events, and although they had spared no expense on the flyer (which was enormous) and the amount of flyers (they made like… 150k flyers) they cut costs almost everywhere else. The concert opted to rent a local $700/night soundsystem…. Suffice to say, they expected 10,000 people to come to this event, they needed 5,000 to break even on expenses. About 1,500 actually came, which included the staff and people who had gotten free tickets (like myself). Was a disaster. I think the producers skipped town the next day 😂
