Awesome! I was living in Courchevel at the time when this was made. I watched this movie endlessly and it defined the ski bum dream... and still does nearly thirty years later.

I was 17 when this came out - we all watched it for the first time on a Friday night before we skied at Whistler the next day. The coolest part about writing this now, is I know there are thousands of others guys out there that know much the film effected them too. Best times with my buds!

Throughout my teenage years whenever skiing, references were made to this movie all the time. It's by far the best ski movie ever.

They were the days. Watched this film so much I had the narration in my head... "I looked down at his skis and it said 223, this was the day before a mogul competition and he was racing bumps in DH Boards."... Classic

What about: 'After Scott jumped the crowds started to leave and we began to pack up. But look who is in the starting gate. Notice the back handspring over the crevasse.' :-)

I skied with Scot 1/2 a day @ Alpine Meadows, Tahoe ( he was testing some downhill skis for K2... they were 210's ) and he out turned all of us Schmidiots ! It doesn't matter about the gear... greatness adapts... the best are the best anywhere, anytime... always.

Thats what a lot of young skiers don't get when they watch these old ski vids. If these guys had today's skis they would be outskiing a lot of today's pro skiers.

It's funny you say this gear was rudimentary. I skied 207 cm K2 VO-Slaloms with Salomon 747 Equipe bindings and SX91 Equipe boots (do they even make rear entry boots anymore?) To me, that gear felt cutting edge. Tuckerman Ravine in New Hampshire. Fifty degree pitches on wind pack. Had to pull myself out of a couple crevasses, but it was fun. We only got 50 or 75 yards of pitch, not 200 like this. Good times. With a wife and kid to take care of, I don't hit pitches like that, anymore.

LOL I think all of us have a run in our past that *felt* like the Poubelle. Comparatively it was a speedbump, sure, but it never feels like it.

Are there two Couloir Poubelles in Cham? Because there is definitely a Couloir Poubelle off the top of Grand Montets, but this one appears to be off the Midi? Anyone know?
@hughcdavies
@hughcdavies 7 жыл бұрын
That's what they say in the film, they abseil into the Grand Montets one later and ski down to the Propaganda tune Frozen Faces. Quote "another couloir called the Poubelle, this one off the Grand Montets, and this time Murrary had us take the hard way in." Like Martin Mckay Skiing I could recite the whole script verbatim during the 90s. I've even bought or down loaded most of the music from Blizzard of Ahhs and Maltese Flamingo. Can't find much of the music for 'Good, the Rad and the Gnarly', I think most of it was produced just for the film and so was not released separately. Happy days
@dillikins
@dillikins 7 жыл бұрын
@hughcdavies Yeah, Ted Musgrave, Tom Blackwell and Bob Thompson did most of the music for GTRATN. I had an email exchange with Bob Thompson a few years back and he was very gracious. Great guitarist. If I remember correctly the only tunes not made specifically for the film were those by Barrington Levy and Propaganda.
