Glen Plake has been called the "Pied Piper of Skiing." With his signature, multi-colored Mohawk hairstyle he is the most recognizable and possibly the best-known skier in the world. From his appearances at the smallest of ski areas in the United States to his descents of the world's most challenging mountains and his innumerable film, television and print media appearances he has done more than anyone to promote a love for skiing to millions of people.

I had the experience of a lifetime time when a friend ran into Glen in the Southern Sierra at the Muir Hut. We were regaled by the most amazing stories all night in the hut. He was so real and full of life. He is a wonderful ambassador. for our great sport. He is a living legend for sure!

He's not an ambassador. He's an ego maniac and a bad skier to boot.

About 1995 with Billy Idol Mony Mony on the head set, I flew over that guy with the spiked mohawk at Copper Mountain, he was in a mogol field that I launched from a road crossing and flew all the way across the mogols , about 300 yards further down my bow legs fatigued and I caught an edge and wiped out, Glenn skied by slowly shaking his head. Waiting on spine surgery now at 66.

I saw him when I was a teen at Angel Fire New Mexico. He had the pink Mohawk and short skis that were shaped like feet! It was probably 1993. He was behind me and my younger brother in the lift line. Coolest thing I had ever seen at the time, unforgettable for sure!

I first saw, and learned of Glenn on my very first time skiing and he just happened to be skiing in North Carolina where we were. I had never heard of him, but that day I saw him jump about 100 feet OVER the moguls. 1991 I think

I met Plake at Stratton Mtn Vermont for an industry demo day and his soon to be wife Kim was co-worker with us. After the après-ski we headed back to CT which was about a 3 hour trip but when we got back to town and stopped by the shop guess who called Plake! He had rented a car and was headed down to meet up with Kim and the rest of us but had blown a tire midway through Mass so he was a little delayed but we gave him directions and met up at a local spot. Since it was a spur of the moment desion for him to come down he didn't have a place to stay so he ended crashing at the house my friend and I were house sitting. We stayed up late just shootuing the shit in front of the fireplace. Great dude!

bumped into Glen in J-Holes lifeline, knew it was him because it was 25 below and he wasn't wearing a hat. Super nice guy, I asked him how he does all those big jumps without getting hurt and he laughed and said "I've broken more bones than I care to admit". He gives it all for the sport.

I too was once as being regarded as one the best (by myself, and a non skiing friend), but now I can't even afford to ski - I have to make do with sliding across the floor in my socks, and getting air of the shed roof.

Heavenly valley is exactly that. Unfortunately, I'm from Oregon and my evolution on the slopes came from Mt. Bachelor, Mt. Hood, Willamate Pass & even small places like Diamond Lake. However, Plake has been a mogul (pun intended) in my life since first watching his videos in my early teens.

I was hiding under a cliff in west bowl at Mammoth as I watched Plake take his Level II PSIA exam in the moguls. While Plake was clearly faster than the examiner my question for Glen is do you have a throttle? Can you slow down and demonstrate at the levels of students. Are your own techinical preferences appropriate for others to learn? Does show boating create a positive relationship or is it intimidating?

Glen Plake grew up skiing Heavenly and some of the European resorts with PERFECT conditions...lets see him toughen up and ski where I grew up...on ice packed East Coast USA resorts.....I have seen better skiers than him hammering this stuff, and with less flash with a stupid haircut, needing attention.
@peterlangley1757
@peterlangley1757 9 жыл бұрын
One TankTrip yeah i grew up on the east too but so what? the perfect conditions made him a better skier where on the east, racers and carvers thrive.. i bet you have seen better skiers.. but he was one of the best and most influential skiers of his time, things have definitely chanced sense then. BTW his hair is part of what makes him an icon, he did it to stand out and have fun with the sport, you need to stop being so stuck up. There is a reason that they inducted him in and they obviously didn't care for your opinion. Also if you didn't hear in the video they said he visited over 50 resorts each year which means he would have had to encounter some hard pack and ice so don't even talk about "toughing up" when he's been climbing mountains and ""starts his winter building legs and lungs climbing thousands of feet of vertical"" . so how his he needing attention and needing to toughen up?

+One TankTrip Plake hugely strong skier I grew on East Coast Ice, bumping outlerlimits in January, Madriver Glen, soforth, 1990 the mogul hanging around the ratpack at its height , Plake was highly respected and still is for a reason. By the way European skiing is far from Ideal conditions. Often heavy snow, icy coulairs, mountain hazards. Plake has a racing background I believe watch his turns. Lots to learn. Without him many of us would never have ventured to places like Chamonix, Greg Stump movies with Plake captured the essence of it

+One TankTrip Tough to tell if you were venting or bitter - Nice to know the Sierra has "perfect conditions". Wind was "60 mph with gusts to 100" @ Heavenly [per Heavenly] yesterday (end of 1/16) -far cry from perfect. Never heard of "Sierra Cement" it seems. In the 12 years I lived at Tahoe (skied most days of the week), mostly at Squaw, I have seen that elusive, highly sought after beast you have mentioned but surely not very often. Even the 14 years since, living well under an hour from Heavenly, I try to make the best of my Heavenly (sure as sugar not in the same ball park as Squaw or Alpine) season pass (w/ jr of course). Ice? Yeah, too much of that crap. After a couple days of non stop, often heavy, rain on a 14' base leaving corrugated 2 feet deep ridges top of run to bottom & then freezing solid (think concrete) - yeah, I remember that week from the early 90's vividly, although not so fondly. Again, hardly perfect. Point being, learn a bit before you criticize.
