Did you check out Jamestown (across from Newport)? It is a shorter walk from the waterfront/marina to the grocery store and there are yummy restaurants, an ice cream shop, bakery, liquor store, hardware store and chandlery along the way. I spent summers in Jamestown growing up and lived much of my adult life in Newport.

Far and away my favorite sailing personality. That perpetual smile and any "issues" are real, and handled the way they should be. Spent many long weekends at Block, finally changing to Montauk (far end of the lake is real quiet, and motorized dinghy gets you to town easy enough) due to the crowded anchorage. Funny how imo, some places are better visited by boat, others by land. I've been looking at RV's lately. My wife fell in love with one, saying "the woodwork is beautiful...like a Cape Dory." I thought of you and your sloop, both enjoying life.

I never had winches for the first twenty years, because I built my own boats. Later I did because the winches were there. You can do it both ways. Nice to feel compentent to take a winch apart for adjustments and maintenence. I thought I saw a girl on board; glad you have one. Wish you well.

It's great the way you sail your boat everywhere. Instead of seeing the world as land masses, mountains, fields, roadways, borders, etc, you see it as oceans, bays, canals, anchorages, harbors, marinas. LOL!!

Thanks. It’s certainly an interesting way to see the world!

New Harbor's bottom is FULL OF JUNK. One summer day I watched a "salvage boat" and diver free a fouled anchor. The price for which was abut $1,000 bux in 2023 $$ to the owner of a brand new 50'+ Swan. The anchor was caught on landing gear from a Cessna. After the skipper's anchor was aboard his boat and he veered away the salvors dropped the mangled rusty mess right back into the drink!!!!

I used to really enjoy the harbors around Shelter Island L.I. when I sailed. Coecles, Dering, Greenport busy but fun, the others were real quiet. Last couple years I was making Montauk my harbor of choice, as Block was getting too crowded, the anchorage anyways. Lake Montauk, far end, away from the Marinas...nothing to do but surf across the street, but nice breeze and super quiet.
