@@hopelogen5406 I looked into this in more detail. Most RFID wallets money belts etc do not block signals the layers are too thin on most of these. This means your cards are not being protected. Also many have banking apps on their cell and when we move to a cashless society fraud will escalate. With phone banking apps tho the best security tip is to use the fingerprint access. Reject any app that does not allow fingerprint authentication. It has been possible for some time for a POS to be modified so it can take payments from people walking past. I'm glad to see you touched on all the sensors that still track you even in a faraday bag. People don't realize your phone can and will record every bump jostle and movement and send that info out. Think about it this way, your phone is in a bag. You're riding on a bus. Person on the bus has their phone out. Even days later on when you take your phone out, it connects and sends your movement info. They can then match your bus related movement to someone else on the bus and know exactly where you were. Why do you think they made batteries non removable? So they can track and record everything regardless of whether you turn that fake off button... off! I watched a phone security video where they had 2 phones, one turned off and and another on and being used during a trip. When they got back, they plugged the phone in and read everything that was being uploaded to google. Even though the phone was off it traced EVERYWHERE they went and how long they were there. The ONLY difference was the location resolution was slightly lower with the phone that was off.

The best way to minimize tracking is to keep apps OFF your phone. You can download them when you need them, and then delete them again. Also, delete both the cache AND all data before deleting apps. Especially if they were for a special offer -- you can usually get the offer again & again just by erasing the data before you delete the app, and then adding the app again. Calling to cancel works much better than calling to try to get rates lowered. When I call to cancel and am offered lower rates I simply say that I already signed up with a company that offers a fair rate in the first place. You might think that staying with the same company for many years without putting in a claim would decrease your rates, but they increase your bill every year because they've already hooked you and can increase their profits. When you call to cancel, they give you a competitive rate so you won't switch to another company.

Yes, your smart watch can in principle be used to track you, whether or not it is connected to your phone. Any device capable of Bluetooth, WiFi, cellular, or any other radio communication can possibly be tracked. NFC and other near-field RFID tech is the exception, I don't think you can reasonably track someone with only that. (But those have other problems) GPS is receive-only, so it cannot be used to track you if your device never connects to the internet or you trust the software on your device not to reveal this data. But in most cases that is obviously not the case and GPS is used for tracking.

Any idea if it blocks the microphone from listening in on conversations, or is it only for data and location?? 🤔
@elvendragonhammer543329 күн бұрын
I do board-level repairs & IT for a living, so assuming you are using a phone @ least 15yrs old then partially. New phone microphones (within the last 10 yrs or so) don't look or function anything like they used to. They are so tiny they are nearly indistinguishable from other chips on the board unless you really know what to look for. They are only about 1.5mm(L) x 1mm(W) x 0.5mm(H) now & look like a surface mount resistor with off coloring. They no longer rely on just the vibration of air molecules to transmit sound, but other modes as well. Most phones have a minimum of two, sometimes 3 or 4. One usually on the board around where your mouth would be if you are holding it to your ear, (behind the screen) one nearer to the charging port, one near the face cam, & one on the other side for video recording. They can combine that data with other sensors on board too. Also, even if you have a phone in a faraday bag with location tracking set to "off" the service that runs the hardware can't be disabled or even force quit from the processes tab anymore The phone will use the altimeter, accelerometer, compass &/or gravity to determine your movements from your last known position. It will triangulate using Bluetooth, WIFI, lidar/radar (if it has it) or the connection between other devices you have been near or connected to in the past- your friends router, your car info-tainment system etc. Hell they can use WIFI & the signals it broadcasts between itself & other devices to create a vision map of where you are in your house & what your doing- look it up- it was shown by security researchers. As for aluminum foil, it would work better than most cages, that said; it does not, & cannot block the whole spectrum. As stated by Naomi herself, if you would have watched it before making this comment. You need different metals to block the entire spectrum. At the very least you need another layer of Copper, or copper 770 alloy, a layer of nickel silver, a layer of tin or tin-plated steel, (this is where old aluminum foil would be useful as the bright side was aluminum & the "browner" side already was tin) & might as well throw in some lead sheet for good measure. Lookup Gamer's Nexus; they spent millions building a professional grade anechoic chamber & a Faraday cage with Faraday shield to test the claims from product manufacturers with laboratory grade accuracy.

@@VMR8648 You can't prevent the microphone from *listening* in a standard phone. You can prevent it from *hearing* by blocking the sound from reaching the microphone. Obviously a thin layer of foil is not going to do that.
@entcraft446 күн бұрын
@@elvendragonhammer5433 Your strategy of different metals does not convince me. What is the reason for each metal? For high frequency (far) fields, the main thing that matters is conductivity and that there are no holes. The thickness must be higher for more attenuation (signal blocking). Aluminum, copper, and silver all work, with less thickness required at the same attenuation for the latter materials. For really low frequency magnetic fields, you need a high permeability material like Permalloy or mu-metal, though steel is also good. I really don't see any need to use more than two different metals. (To block normal radio communication this is not necessary) For low frequency electric fields, grounding may be important. But it must be done properly especially if you have electrical appliances within the cage that are supplied with external power cables. For an an EM anechoic chamber you also need radiation absorbing material, but this is to prevent the radiation generated by the devices in the chamber from affecting said devices themselves. It isn't required for blocking the signals leaking in or out of the box. At least not if it is perfectly sealed. If there are openings, absorbing material inside the box might be helpful.

Is this problem solved installing grapheneOS? I was told that tracking is unavoidable because the phone gives constant signal to the antennas...
@markandrews1219Ай бұрын
Expanding on your series of videos on privacy phones - Have you considered doing an episode dedicated to mobile routers? The technique of using a DeGoogled Pixel running Graphene OS is extremely sound however, the weakest link will be the mobile broadband/4G|5G hotspot router. It would be ideal to be able to run Graphene or at least a hardened version of Linux on the mobile hotspot device to maintain a high level of privacy and security of data transfers. Are you aware that in Australia, the government has recently blocked numerous devices via their IMEI from working on all mobile networks? There is a political trend in Australia to make encrypted devices illegal including VPNs. The country is on the verge of becoming the most dystopian surveillance state in the world.

I’m struggling to understand how a device, which receives its location information through passively acquiring GPS signal, supposedly still knows where it is when inside of a Faraday. Which, through testing we’ve determined is not receiving signals whilst inside the Faraday. Naomi mentioned the accelerometer and compass. But a compass only points to a certain azimuth and direction. A compass does not tell you where you are.

@ so then why bother with a Faraday in the first place.
@XSpImmaLionАй бұрын
Basically, security and privacy are not black and white. It's not either you have it, or you don't. The more strategies you adopt, the harder it is to collect information. So... if someone is targeting you, not everyone will bother to use inertial navigation to track you, and it's a more imprecise form of tracking. Of course, whether you wanna bother using faraday bags or not is still your own choice... it kinda depends on your threat modeling.
