A bit confused around the 5:25 - 6:10 mark. The sketched areas look like 1/4 of a hole, not 1/2 of the diameter hole. Am I not understanding the diameter hole correctly?

how do we determine the critical portion that block shear will occur?

If you want to check it robustly, you would check each potential block failure plane, but based on connection tests, the potential failure planes shown in the video are the ones most often encountered
