I have a main sewer inspection manhole in my backyard. The sewer department has been a couple of time when there was a blockage and l watched on one occasion to see what its like in there. Firstly there is an aroma certainly but surprisingly not as offensive as you might think,mitigated somewhat by scented soaps,laundry detergent and washing up liquid.Secondly it is very warm in there,l suppose from the hot water of dozens of household showers,washing machines and dishwashers. Thirdly it was inhabited by Redbacks(spiders) and roaches,the large brown ones that,not surprisingly,get into you house through the drain holes in your bathroom and laundry. There were probably rats too but l didn't see any of them. Fourth,there was a constant parade of turds in infinite variety and streamers of toilet paper coming past(this was about 7 am so l suppose that was the morning rush hour,lol.) All in all an interesting experience,certainly not like the sewers you see in the movies.
