When I was teaching young kids to ride in England it was common practice to put a English stirrup leather around the horse or ponies neck and we would get kids to tuck their little finger under this neck strap and they would use that until they where steady enough in the saddle that they weren’t at risk of using the reins to stay on it was particularly useful when first teaching them to jump and it stopped many a horse or pony from getting a jab in the mouth every time they went over a jump

I have a horse that will flex its nose around to me very softly but chomps and flips its nose about and does not keep its head quietly at its side. Should I keep his head flexed to his side until he quiets his attitude or is there something else I am missing in his all around training that would address the quietness?

My horse has gotten better from a giraffe to courtesy softness but when we pick up a lope ,head goes up and I use both reins to check him . If I let a loose rein he goes full speed. We dont have a big flat arena we do this on trails and logging roads. Really hard to bring him down on a trail until I let him rip till hes tired. Ha. Working on it at slower speeds but . What oh what can I do? One rein at a gallop is a bit off balance on a twisty trail.

Warwick, do you keep on using your reins like this all the time? Do you keep such a slack for the rest of their lives? Or just till they get the part about giving to pressure? don't you take your reins a bit shorter to keep a certain frame, or to interfere once they lose their frame? I have a horse who gives well to pressure, but just doesn't get it to keep the frame on a lose rein. So i ask, he gives, i give slack, but he doesn't keep the frame that long. Do i need to hold him a bit longer?

Do you ever feel the need to keep the slightest contact on a green horse when riding out, just incase it turns very suddenly and you can correct it mid turn, or would you be ok with correcting that spook/turn after the fact. I've generally rode on a long rein, but still with enough feel -if I think I'm going towards something that could possibly cause a 180degree turn...

Warwick =Such a smart operator! No matter what style you ride, you should subscribe to this mans monthly subscription on his,website.. there is so much to learn and if you start with your horse... You'll be amazed. It is a case of work smarter not harder! Im loving it! I did the hooking on with my horse and a few exercises... It's amazing! Im on my way to being a total convert even though IM an English rider, this a better way.

Very helpful information! I've been doing groundwork with my horse for a few weeks now and will be riding him soon. Thanks!

I have just switched to a mecate rein and slobber straps from split reins because my horse have learned that if he moves his head around enough eventually they are so long I have zero control. With the loop style mecate that is one thing less to have in mind.

When I get the length spot on I intend to wrap a piece of colored string around the center so I always have equally long reins in both sides.

Curious as to how this horse is bred? I imagine Australia has their own successful cow horse lines....? I honestly have no idea!
