This is an excellent video, both Paul and Tanzeen bring up very excellent points in their critiques. I would softly disagree with the usage of terms like “patriarchal” or even “democratic” to characterize certain aspects of islamic social structure. Not because of ideological concerns, but simply on a semantic level. Patriarchy necessitates an absolutist power being disproportionately distributed to men over women, I disagree with this because the power given to men is conditional and they are accountable for it. Also, as Paul mentions, women are working in harmony with men, not in a position of inferiority. Other than that, this was a very strong conversation and It’s always a treat when BT uploads!

Patriarchy in a family structure where there is a contract between man and wife, or perhaps to the father, but that does not extend to sons and younger brothers to mothers and sisters in an extended family. It does not extend to sons, brothers or unrelated men to women. Does it? That patriarchy ends with divorce. The mechanism of patriarchy also relate to an extent to financial dependence or independence. More complex then it is being articulated here by Doha as pan patriarchy.

Ironically Muslims are told how Islam has very empowering laws for women, like the right to your business, your inheritance, keeping your maiden name, etc,yet in practice this isn’t the case for many women in all the Muslim countries, so when women like in the west had to fight to be recognised as having a brain and also needed not to be just chattels to men, Muslim women also started to voice their unhappiness of having to be subservient to men! I’m sorry in my home we were raised with equality between my brothers and sisters, and this enabled us to excel in our professions, and still,life a very fulfilling lives as wives, mothers, and grandmothers!

For example, I only know English language so communication would be almost impossible if I had a relationship with a Muslim who only spoke Arabic. When he is performing prayer, the angels send blessings upon him for as long as he remains in his place of prayer. They say: O Allah, bless him and have mercy upon him. While there are many types of patriarchy good or bad, feminism is presented as monolithic. Feminism is also a spectrum and to say it’s incompatible with Islam as a general rule is dismissive of the profound empowerment Islam brought to females at the time. Women participated in politics as evident in the formative events of Islam. The first believer was a woman, so was the first martyr; a delegate of men and women gave the prophet (SAAW) the pledge of allegiance before his Hijra to Medina. Women in Islam in the early years were given financial independence, a right to inheritance, education, and choice in marriage and divorce. They fought in battle with the prophet and treated the wounded. They transmitted Hadith and taught men and women alike. Many of these ancient rights of Muslim women are denied in many Muslim communities today and they have to fight for them. If feminism that is derived from authentic Islamic sources including the Holy Quran and Hadith is equated with radical secular feminism, the alienation of Muslim women and fossilization of a rigid one sided understanding of Islam are sure to follow especially in this day and age.
@enlightenlife2840 Жыл бұрын

@asadzaidi6188 Жыл бұрын
Wa alaikum assalam brother. The first point that should come to any Muslims mind is, Are we going to start believing Christians who will deny explicit words of Jesus and feed their own meanings in implicit ones? How can Umar or anyone reveal something to Allah? Allah is God and knows anything. Umar didn't reveal any verse to Allah (nauzubillah). Allah revelation came after something Umar suggested and affirmed what Umar said. It was Allah's mercy for Umar and a blessing for him that Allah affirmed his statement. These Christians know in their hearts that their book is contradictory and not the word of God, and now try to mislead the Muslims in believing the same about Qur'an.

Another example of what Muslim feminists mean by a patriarchal interpretation is the issue of paying alimony to divorced women. If you explore all schools of fiqh, you find some say it is not obligatory, some scholars say giving a woman one garment and a meal is enough, while others expressed more generous opinions, and yes, I say "opinions" If a Muslim country applies the first opinion, they claim to follow the shariah just as the country that follows the second or third opinion. Fiqh is a man-made interpretation and should not be equated with shari`ah, which only Allah has the exclusive meaning of. So, when Muslim feminists speak on the topic, they are asking for their God-given right in a world where many of them became the breadwinners and many times not with choice. We have to include women's perspectives to bring attention to their suffering, and we can criticize traditional scholars because they were not gods or prophets. Gender equality is mentioned in the Qur'an, and equality here means justice. I do not see you are interviewing women, why is that?

Why don't you interview a female Muslim scholar who may have a different view? Autonomy is an Allah-given right to women, and it does not mean that Muslim feminists are going against Allah. Qur'an's Hermeneutics is essential. Take the example of the woman who complained to Umar Ibn al-Khattab, regarding her share of inheritance. She has worked as a tailor with her husband and built a business, and they did not have children, so when her husband died she ended up having less share than her husband's siblings who never set a foot in the business. Khalifah Umar ruled, after consulting many companions, that she should get half of her husband's wealth beside her share, which he called labor money. Allowing women to talk about their current problems and allowing thinkers to find ways to establish justice rather than a blind interpretation of Shari`ah is what Muslim feminists are calling for. It does not make them evil, westerners, or want to change Islam from within. Let us look at Maqasid ash-Shari`ah to make sure we do not misapply it.

Shariah = Qur'an Alone, "If all the trees on earth were pens, and the sea were ink, with seven more seas yet added, the Words of God would not be exhausted. God is Almighty, Wise. [31:27, 18:109]". Traditional Islam will not prevail in the modern secular world because "the secular, scientific and material nature of the creations reflect the Deen of Allah" (Qur'an 3:83).

@@grnzrn The complete quote: "While it is certainly true that Islam’s corpus of texts, reasoning structure, and scholars are full of contradictions and paradoxes, there is still a sys-tematization of knowledge in which an orthodoxy is articulated. And to assume that the complex mechanism through which this articulation takes place over a period of fourteen hundred years is simply a determination of history is to commit tremendous violence upon Islamic epistemology and methodology. The multiple contradictions and the existence of plurality of thought within the epistemic unity of Islam does not necessarily negate, undermine, or delegitimize orthodoxy. To assume such a delegitimization is to essentialize difference" I think it's very clumsy of him. But he would have to justify himself on this passage indeed.

Go simp for women in other platforms. Won't work here. PS: According to 3.5th wave feminism, you have not asked the guest's gender.
