At 55:50 Paul asked 'why did the 'church' retain the gospel of Mark when it has things missing....the other gospels 'upgraded the story'? I think what this actually shows is that the idea that there is copying from Mark and developing further is in fact, false! What Paul's question inadvertently reveals here, is that it is illogical to "upgrade" or "develop", but continue to "run the old outdated software"! When software is upgraded the old is removed! The point is that "if" it was the case that Mark was simply "a prototype" to be developed further as per a popular academic narrative, Mark would not have been kept in the canon, but deemed to be superseded by "better quality gospels"! The idea behind the "development narrative" is that the gospel writers were cunningly making more and more of the story of Jesus and making Jesus more and more important and divine! And what this means is that if that were ACTUALLY true, then Mark would have been removed, going by this same logic! However, Mark's gospel also makes Jesus divine, and this is often overlooked by critics, eager to push the 'evolutionary development idea'! ...and this is consistent with the fact that a great deal of material that is in Matthew and Luke, is absent from Mark, not because it was "developed", but because the gospel writers were not copying from Mark at all, but were using now unknown writings and testimonies of early Christians.

Fascinating discussion of Mark's Gospel. Again Professor Martin is very clear, and eruditely brings the New Testament background to life. On the final part of the discussion, about the more primitive or Low Christology of Mark, I'm reminded of Professor Allisson's discussion on the channel previously. He remarked that it is not so easy to determine the beliefs of the early Christians in terms of high and low Christologies from the Gospel writings. Paul has a high Christology, and is the earliest of the New Testament writers. So when Professor Martin leaves it at : Mark believes that Jesus is 'somehow' divine, I think there is room for further elucidation. Professor Allison's distinction between: knowing what the text of Marks says, not being the same as knowing what the author thought, is something that might be considered here. That although Mark may present a Low Christology, it is not necessarily the case that that gives the full picture of Christian belief for him or his community. Ideas about Jesus could well have been circulating, and held, whilst not fully emphasised in Mark's text.

@@matthewpaulson6497 Thank you Matthew. Bauckham is a top scholar and has produced this classic work on how the gospels were actually written! What Bauckham points out is that the many names of people listed in the gospels were actually the eye witnesses of the accounts which they in the close Christian community of the time, related to the gospel writers. I think you will find the book fascinating as it does give good insight into the subject. It is written academically so you have to be prepared for that if reading it - but it is not too much - it is approachable, but needs patience to get through. But its well worth investing the time for anyone who is seriously interested in this subject! Those whose agenda is to rubbish the gospels will probably choose not to read it as it will contradict their assumptions!

Well friend, according to the Christian New Testament, Christians will not be brought to "trial". Only those who have rejected Christ will be brought to trial to be investigated by Christ, for their rejection of him. The reason for this is that Christ went to the trial for us and died on behalf of us, receiving the penalty of sin on our behalf. There is no need for anyone to go to trial, but those that have rejected the Christ of the Cross, have chosen to attempt to make their own defence in their coming trial! God help them! Christians are to be judged by a separate event in which they will be judged by their "works" to see if their works are worthy to be received as acceptable to the Lord! They themselves are however exempt from the trial of unbelievers and the sentence of eternal death.

For every god may rebuke the sea and its waves calm down, but not everyone who rebukes the sea and its waves calm down is a god, because the existence of that which is more general does not necessarily result in the existence of that which is more particular. A somewhat unrelated note, the injeel we speak of as Muslims, are the gospel of Jesus. NOT a gospel from Mathew, mark, Luke, John, “Q” or paul. Since those do not hold proper chains of narration and aren’t even noted to be written be their ascribed names. We can affirm the message Jesus ACTUALLY brought, by alignment with the Quran and that which the Quran affirms. But when we as Muslims speak about the injeel, it is important to note that it is Jesus’s gospel, not to be confused with the New Testament contents as a whole.

The greater reality of the message and meaning of Messiah, who was a man, touched by the Prophetic blessing of Our Creator, was born to accomplished everything asked of him and did so, just as required to fulfill his purpose to show a light to humanity. That he could do nothing alone, other than overcoming the evil of the world. The exact requirement asked of all humanity, but by succeeding, left a record of the way ahead for those who believed in him, could follow. That every miracle, every Prophesy fullfilled happened through him from Our Creator, who set up lights for this world to know He alone is really there above us all. That he was rejected, is nothing different other Prophets also suffered. Yet his real Hebrew name Y'Esua tells the truth of his outcome. Yahowah (He Who Is (Allah) saved him.
How does "his real Hebrew name Y'Esua tell the truth of his outcome"? Can you explain better? Thanks !!

@Juley beeb It's an historical fact that Jesus lived and died a Jew. He would have known Hebrew to read the Jewish Scriptures, in Palestine, although a Greek version of the Jewish Scriptures existed - the Septuagint - used by the Greek speaking Jews of the Eastern Roman Empire. Aramaic would have been Jesus' everyday language, but given that Greek culture had made its way into Palestine ( a few miles outside Nazareth was the town of Sepphoris, a Hellenistic town, and there were the Greek speaking towns of the Decapolis), so Jesus may well have known some Greek. Perhaps some Latin too, to deal with Roman administration. Even the architecture of the Temple, built by Herod, in Jerusalem was Greek inspired. The Gospels did not exist before Paul; he is the earliest writer of the New Testament, and Jesus himself never wrote anything. what the four Gospels contain are the traditions handed down about Jesus in the early Christian communities. Early Christianity began as a movement within Judaism. Basically, you have Judaism - Christianity emerging from Judaism, and the rest of the pagan beliefs of the Roman Empire. Jesus was crucified, not because he taught a new religion, rejected by the Jews, but precisely because he was a Jew who challenged the religious status quo, particularly the aristocracy who controlled the Temple.

@@johnbrzykcy3076 John - the gospels were definitely written in the 1st century and Papias and Polycarp are both said to have had personal contact with the earliest disciples and Christian community - so the evidence for the authenticity of the gospels is pretty strong! The early church fathers made approximately 1 million quotations from the earliest gospels, in their own writings which is why the argument that we don't know what the earliest gospels said, is false. Our earliest existing gospel manuscripts are from the 2nd century. Although they are fragmentary, they cover the entire New Testament in total. Opponents of the gospels either don't know this or don't mention it, but it does mean that the popular claims that the gospels weren't written for hundreds of years after Jesus is false. What it actually means is that there wasn't such a long period of time for the gospels to be modified as is the popular view by many. I'm sorry to say it, but there is a great deal of popular deception going on, being propagated by the internet and especially over You Tube!
@peaceinjesus52213 жыл бұрын
Ebenezer - its also worth pointing out that the dating of the gospels by academics is partially dependant upon the idea that there is no such thing as prophetically telling the future - ie, if the gospels say that Jesus said that the Temple would be destroyed....then this "MUST" mean that these words were placed INTO the mouth of Jesus after it actually happened! In other words a position of total scepticism regarding the idea that such a thing as prophecy can literally exist! The position of many scholars is that the NT and gospels are simply 'literature' like any other ancient literature. ....and therefore if there are claims of prophecy they must be indicators that Jesus didn't say such things, but were placed into the mouth of Jesus by the gospel writers who 'fabricated' these prophecies! This is a position of not only scepticism but one of making the writers to be outright liars! This then becomes an 'indicator' that the gospels must have been written AFTER the Temple destruction in AD 70, if the gospel writer included such a prophecy from Jesus in it! By the same token, the same cynical academics assume that Jesus can't have done miracles either, so these too must be 'made up'! and on and on.. and by this so called 'academic reductionist approach' they end up with virtually nothing and a teacher who simply went around preaching...ending up with a complete conundrum! ....they can no longer explain why the authorities would be angry with such a preacher who simply taught the Torah!....and there is no longer any reason to want to stop him, kill him or crucify him! ....and likewise the false accusations made about Jesus saying he would "destroy the Temple and rebuild it in 3 days" (when Jesus meant his own body and resurrection), no longer make any sense if he never predicted the destruction of the Temple aswell to happen a generation later! This kind of critical academic reductionism can be called 'radical scepticism' and that's what it amounts to! They lead themselves and others down the garden path to nowhere!

@@johnbrzykcy3076 Yes John, and it is becoming ever more sophisticated! Never, has the gospel of Jesus, ever been under so much attack, in its entire history. I offer that as my opinion, but I'm convinced that is the case, facilitated by the internet and Information Age, that has been accompanied by the "Misinformation Age"! As we can see in Paul's videos, it is so easy for someone to co-opt the contentions of sceptical academics or to use their lectures and writings selectively, for the purpose of promoting one's own agenda! In Paul's case his agenda is purely to promote Islam, but in the case of others it can be to promote Atheism or some other ideology - all of them are more than happy to quote what they call "Christian" scholars, against the Christian writings! ...(as if that was even possible!). ...but apparently, "if the end justifies the means, then who cares?" If someone asks you: "Have you read 'Misquoting Jesus' by Bart Ehrman?" you can ask him similarly: "Have you read "Reinventing Jesus - how contemporary skeptics miss the real Jesus and mislead popular culture" by Daniel B Wallace et al. (which refutes Ehrman's misleading statements and explains why they are misleading!). There is also "Revisiting the Corruption of the New Testament" by Daniel B Wallace. I'm, not suggesting that you read these books, unless you are interested in the academics of this subject, but you can refer critics to them, as they are refutations of the popular misleading allegations against the Christian New Testament.
