A detail that's been pointed out to me: During the fight with Hama, Katara stands her ground and STOPS Hama's attack instead of redirecting it -- this is why Hama is surprised. Because that kind of maneuver is an EARTHBENDING move. Katara learned to use Earthbending-style techniques in a similar vein to how Iroh learned to redirect lightning by watching Waterbenders.

@@carlosramos87693:50 most waterbenders would have used the attacks momentum to spin around and launch it right back somehow but instead katara stops the attack in its tracks, which is an earthbending style move she probably picked up from toph. im pretty sure each nations fighting style is based on an actual martial art but earthbending is more like 'power and iron defense' while waterbending is more 'fluidity and redirection'. so for hama its a shocking move especially coming from another waterbender because shes probably never seen it done

Sozin wiped out the air nomads during the comet because the next Avatar after Roku would be an air bender. His son Azulon seems to have tried rounding up all the water benders under the assumption that the air Avatar was killed so capture the next Avatar since water is the next element. Clearly he didn't fully succeed considering how many water benders were still in the Northern tribe but I do think they tried to take them too since that would explain why the Northern tribe had those 80+ year old Fire Nation uniforms in The Siege of the North Part 1.

Also sad fact. Since all the waterbenders from the south are dead except Katara and Hama, that means that the southern water bending style that was brought up in the library episode is kind of dead, since I doubt Hama could have taught the entire style to Katara in one day and Katara learned northern bending style with Aang.

It is theorised that the whole reason the fire nation was so desperate to take all the waterbenders from the southern water tribe (why they came back when they heard Katara was a waterbender) was because they were scared there could be more blood benders after Hama escaped this way, so they were attempting to wipe them all out.

An interesting point I saw someone make is that Katara doesnt make a move to physically stop Hama when she is bloodbending Katara. She renders Hamas power useless without affecting her directly, and the most likely way that she did that is to bloodbend herself. Because she is naturally more powerful Hama wasnt physically stopped, her actual power wasn't interrupted, she just was suddenly no longer in control. Always thought that was interesting

Just some points I've made👇: Bloodbending is alot more darker when you realize Hama was suggesting that the 'blood' could be pulled out of the body. She referenced there being water in unthinkable places, and then stated taking it further when Katara reference plantbending. That's why she was kidnapped alot of people, she was going to bend out all of their blood (and likely already has). On the flipside I do think bloodbending has strong potential for healing techniques being developed. There is one healing technique that is borderline bloodbending. 13:50 Hama was surprised because Katara did an earthbending move (face it directly) rather than redirect it (Katara was there when Toph told Aang this during his earthbending lessons). I love how this show basically sets you up to imagine if the benders were to incorporate other bending styles to their own. Iroh mentions how incorporating other bending styles to your own bending can make you stronger.(makes sense as he developed a new technique out of it) and you'll see Team Avatar incorporating eachother's bending styles to their own bending. Well your partially correct. As the avatar, Aang can pretty much learn any bending, however there is a limit to it. The bending that the avatar has struggled to master, is more than likely the bending in which he'd struggle to develop the sub techniques. Example Aang struggled with earthbending, so metalbending would already be way difficult. However he may be able to do lavabending. As the avatar and since water was very easy for him; he has more than enough raw power for bloodbending, however they don't want any avatar to have access to such dark technique so that's why he won't learn it.

"It's the way you use it" I mean. The thing is it's no so easy to say that about blood bending. Fire bending was perceived in such a negative light due to its destructive ability, but it has direct uses in industrialization and other applications like food preparation and later on powering electrical devices. It's not just destruction, it's life, to put it in words used later on in the series. But, with blood bending, to use it on others has an inherent invasion of privacy and autonomy. While it theoretically has uses in medicine, this would realistically be accompanied by a crap ton of waivers and signed agreements for written consent if we ever see it in the Avatar world. The only other way I can see it being used that doesn't strip away someone's control over their body is if a bender used it on themselves as a performance enhancement (get your mind out of the gutter).

Bloodbending referred to as the highest level of waterbending, as well as the darkest, most powerful, and most feared of all bending techniques. 🩸🩸

Imagine, theoretically speaking, if someone bloodbends, that person is controlling the blood in the body which causes the blood to stop flowing naturally to vital parts of the body, blood travels at three feet per second when it leaves the heart, but it slows down as it gets into smaller arteries and capillaries. It takes a minute to get around the body. In total, five quarts of blood per minute are transported around the body. With that being said, if you control the blood, it suffocates the body of oxygen going to the brain. Another things is the excruciating feeling of pins and needles as blood rushes back. I think you could die instantly because of the sudden rush of blood. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate that the villagers outright heard Hama say there was another bloodbender and yet they didn't outright go after the group? I know there's obviously a 'we owe you for saving us' grace period, but there was absolutely no talk of a 'young waterbending witch in fire nation clothes' after this fact.

she's too old to be friends with katara's mother, objectively . she says she was arrested 60 years ago , but Katara's mom wasn't even born back then if you consider Katara's age (13 or 14) and the age of her mother when she gave birth to her . Hama is definitely from the earlier generation based on that clue, and also she's the one who stuck that fire nation ship in the ice , the same we saw in season 1 , the one with the booby trap that Aang activated . ps: then that woman that looks like Katara in the flashback could be Gran Gran , Katara's grandmother we saw in season 1 , not sure but it could be ( first time i think about it actually)

almost all the knowledge of bending air has been lost since aang is the last one left and he is a child, but there are also powerful and forbidden techniques, in the legend of korra you can learn more about them but remember that monk gyatso, died in a small room and took with him about 8 or 10 fire benders.

I've been watching a lot of ATLA reactions from a lot of different channels lately, and I ALWAYS read the comments on this episode to see if anyone else got that, but so far I haven't seen anybody comment this. (P.s. sorry for the long comment. I'm kind of nerd when it comes to like world building/background info. I blame being an author) I'm honestly surprised that no one has mentioned or caught on to the fact that Hama escaped ALONE (although yes technically she could be the last one alive, but somehow I doubt that, because if any of them HAD been the Avatar, it would have started the reincarnation process over again with the earth benders. So no, I don't think she was the last alive when she escaped). In the flashback you see the other waterbenders in other cages alongside Hama's, but when she escapes she doesn't help any of them escape too. She walks out alone. She doesn't pause or stop to talk to them. She just walks straight out. Although, it did occur to me that the water benders spirits could have been extinguished a long time ago, similar to the earth benders in Season 1, and thus not have escaped with her. However, considering that Hama specifically mentions that "any sign of trouble would be met with CRUEL RETRIBUTION" leaves me to believe one thing: that being tortured (and considering this is technically a kids show, the show writers probably wouldn't mention this even if they could, but you have to consider that they are war prisoners, and this happened a lot in wars, historically speaking anyways) and probably raped for decades, I think would have anyone jump at the chance to escape. But Hama doesn't even spare them a glance. Which when given more thought, probably led to the death of all the rest of the water benders who were still alive in the prison. The fire benders would NOT give any of the rest of them a chance to do the same, nor let them develop something so powerful as Hama did. Which also leads me to Katara's Mom, Kya's death. The fire benders were looking for Hama "the last water bender in the Southern Tribe" and when Kya said it was her? If they killed all the rest of the water benders that were still alive, they obviously weren't going to keep Kya alive either. I would also like to point out the reason behind the Raids from the fire benders on BOTH the North and South Pole, was because Fire Lord Azulon (who is the son of Sozin, who started this whole war, so he probably wanted to continue his father's legacy. He was also father to Iroh and Ozai, and grandfather to Zuko and Azula incase you missed that) assumed that the reason his father could not find the Avatar was because he perished in the Air Temples along with the rest of the air benders. The Avatar cycles is Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. So Azulon's obvious conclusion was if the Air Avatar is dead then the next would be born in Water (which he wouldn't have been wrong if Aang actually was dead). The only reason that the Raid on the Southern Tribe was even successful where the North one wasn't, is because they are a LOT smaller, not as hidden, nor have as much of a military/guards/army, etc. Yes they had water benders, but they were more of... (these are probably the wrong words to use, but for lack of any better ones) a peaceful and humble tribe. For example, they lived in igloos and had a small and tightly knitted village and community. I'm sure everyone knew everyone there pretty closely. They didn't have any "real" nobles or nobility besides having a Chief, which is normal for any type or kind of Tribe of that nature, even in the real world. In complete contrast, the North lived in this hugely crafted city made of ice that lay BEHIND giant ice walls in the middle of even more huge icebergs. I wouldn't necessarily have said they were hidden, not with the giant water symbol on the wall, but they WERE better protected. Not too mentioned they LITERALLY housed the Moon and Ocean Spirits in the middle of their city. They had nobles and prestige, hence "PRINCESS" Yue and her "arranged" marriage. They had some type of formal military and (at least I think this part, I'm not sure how much this is my opinion or if it is what they were based on from the creators) were basically a feudal nation, similar to Japan in some ways (I look at this picture when I think of this, specifically the left side column: medievaljapanalyssa.weebly.com/uploads/1/4/4/5/14459458/7348417.gif?614) AGAIN just stating that that is my opinion of how I view the Northern/Southern Tribes based off what I saw, it doesn't mean that it's true! Anyways, all in all the fire benders had a MUCH more difficult time trying to Raid the North Pole vs the South Pole. Also, to back up my theory that there WERE other alive water benders when Hama escaped, take into account that they are called RAIDS for a reason. They were obviously meant to steal what they wanted in quick and sudden attacks. So yes they "captured" rather than "kill" any water benders they found. If any of them actually were the Avatar, they would have already been in prison and not a threat, AND had the added benefit of 1. not having to look again in the much bigger Earth Kingdom for the Avatar and the threat they posed to the war efforts, and 2. destroyed the resources and basically "conquered" another nation which was the whole basis of Sozin's plan for the war, i.e. expanding his or rather the Fire Nation's Empire under Azulon. Anyways, sorry again for my very long comment, I just thought I'd share my thoughts on Hama and the North/South Poles as I don't think I've ever seen anyone else mention any of this before. Am I wrong for thinking like this? Or did anyone else think of this too?

Always felt bad for Hama ,she was forced to use this power to escape . True she started attacking people who did nothing but decades in prison like those will make you do things like this ,she should have been forgiven ,if the fire nation didn't attack her villaige she wouldn't be in this situation.

That's like saying we should forgive a rapist because they were raped as a child. Just because Hama was tortured when she was younger doesn't give her the right to torture innocent people. She was once a victim yes, but now she's an abuser who harms defenseless people for bigoted reasons.

The Fire Nation government is the one who decided to commence war, which is why Hama is stupid for attacking the civilians who have nothing to do with that.
