The main issue for Toph's parents was that they afraid to be ashamed that people knowing their daughter blind, not fitting their expectations. @@patricktorres1292 Bumi has the experience to back up his power. Toph is young but as seen in this episode earthbending came very naturally to her. Being able to "see" the earthbending about to transpire gives her an overall advantage to defense. As far as power goes Bumi definitely has the advantage. However if they both fought I believe Toph would still win.

Bumi has more raw power and strength. Dude could possibly move a small mountain if he wanted to. Earthbending also seems to take physical strength; Bumi seems to struggle with lifting huge rocks. Toph being a 12 year old girl has very little in terms of physical strength, but more than makes up for it with raw skill and learning how to actually listen and feel the earth, just like Bumi has, but being blind has increased her other senses, surpassing Bumi's abilites. I don't think Bumi could ever EVER defeat Toph.... She is just too skilled to lose, but Toph will NEVER be able to move the sheer amount of earth that Bumi can. 1v1: Toph wins. Boulder toss competition? Bumi all day.

Since you mentioned it in the intro Kysohi was the longest lived Avatar at 230 (also longest confirmed lived human). There are books about Kyoshi that I haven't read but I've heard explain, at least somewhat, how she was able to live so long.

Yeah the books explain it but her age being so crazy long was because of an error the show made. It came from the leader of Kyoshi Island when he talked about how long ago she was born. They realized that they made her birthday too far in the past since she was only the Avatar before Roku but it was too late to change it.

Toph is extremely powerful because she uses a bending style more like the original way of earth bending. Her connection to the earth is way higher than other benders. If you've ever driven a manual transmission vehicle vs a automatic you know the connection to the car and road is way closer. That's why I find it more fun to drive stick.
