In another scene Archer asks : " so, Solomon you're a fisherman. What do you generally catch? " . Solomon simply replies " Fish ". I don't know how many got this humour amidst this intense moments of this masterpiece made by Edward Zwick.

This scene is incredibly deep. Though it isn't in my view the best, it's certainly a scene which requires a depth of understanding. This scene is meant to highlight Archer's unending greed for diamonds and wealth and more. It's also to show how when one is consumed with greed, they're unable to truly live by being human. Archer has no wife nor children and states that even after finding the pink diamond, still he won't have enough money. The last line said by Archer is the most significant: 'That makes two of us.' Archer is desperately confused due to his lust for wealth. Very powerful scene.
@jeffersonsteelflex30567 жыл бұрын
He didn't state that he wouldn't have enough money, he stated that he wouldn't have the wife and children. His soul desire is to find the diamond to leave the "godforsaken continent" of Africa. Not out of greed or lust but to finally stop having to do what he does for a living. The last line "that makes two of us" was simply him saying he was confused by why Solomon thinks that wife and kids come along with wealth.
@murukami787 жыл бұрын
the scene is about white people stopping having children.
@elementengine7 жыл бұрын
I think Archer was just confused about life in general, and where his would go. Solomon's talking about settling down in peace and having a family which are foreign things to Archer cause his entire life had been chaos.
@albrown71676 жыл бұрын
No no it is a foreshadowing scene of when archer gives Solomon the diamond. Solomon is confused because archer has nothing and when he has the diamond archer admits he will have nothing still, Solomon is confused as to why he wants it so bad if no happiness will come of it and archer agrees. he has no idea why he wants the diamond if it won’t improve his life. So in the end he gives it to Solomon to build a happy life with his family where archer would have been the same miserable bastard. At least that’s how i took it

Some people have said that Archer couldn't have a wife because he was only obsessed by money. But I don't think that's the main issue. The problem is he is so emotionally scarred by his experiences and lifestyle that on some basic level he cannot relate easily to others or connect. That's the tragedy! He has had to live without women and believes that even if he had money, he would still not be someone women would want. Hence his confusion.
@morrisheinersz2005 Жыл бұрын
look what happened to Archer's mother and father when he was a boy...
@r.b.ratieta6111 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's because he believes he's not someone women would desire. I think it's because he's learned that by not being deeply tied to anyone emotionally, he can be in greater control of his decisions and live a life free of fear. (Read More). That said, I think you're spot-on about severe trauma being the primary reason. His Mom and Dad were brutally murdered in front of him, his Mom raped. It makes sense that his brain would recover itself by saying that love and intimacy were potential weaknesses, not strengths. Better to be alone and happy than intertwined with someone who could devastate you.
@peteschweddy4263 Жыл бұрын
@@r.b.ratieta6111 yeh it’s more he can’t truly have a life or family because his life has led him down this path. He’s good at what he does. He could get any woman. But a family is different. That’s the misconception. He’s ex military and smuggling diamonds. He’s clearly young enough to remember what it was to be Rhodesian (timeline-wise) and considers himself Rhodesian may have even been raised and trained by former Selois Scouts or some shit. He’s a mercenary turned smuggler. Clearly he’s good at what he does. He’ll fuck but he doesn’t let relationships or potential threats (like journalists) get in his way. At least until Jennifer Connelly…but he’s committed to his cause initially.

I identified so much with Archer and he communicated it better than I could. I was 27 then, now I'm 31, the same age as Archer and I'm still in his shoes.

This is not just a film to watch for entertainment.There are so much to think about every scene in this film.There are many valuable lessons to adopt to our life from this masterpiece. One side there's Archer who is willing to die for money and the other side there's solomon who is willing to die for his family. There's love and affection between Archer and Maddy but it's only expressed in the death scene of Danny. Every actors are just extraordinary in this film. We can see that for some people there is no friends or bonds when comes to money. Peoples mind changes accordingly. It may take only just a single incident to realize who we actually are. We can also see how the training and drugs change one to a brutal man from Dia Vandy's change . . There's so much in this film and it's the favourite film of me for years. I've never seen a movie like this before or after.. The closest one so far is The last Samurai.Like that film too.
@Shore19854 жыл бұрын
Solomon grew up in such a poor environment that for him money has no real value. Sure he earns some here and there but he basically can just use it to fullfill his basic needs. Everything beyond that is out of his horizont. For him other values like family are much more important. At the end of the movie you can see him standing in shock in front of the jeweler in London. Thats probably the first time he realized what some people are willing to pay for these diamonds.
