If you look at the small shelf between the two wardrobes outside the killers secret room, there's an amulet. Picking it up fixed this for me

My problem is I investigated the house and got the clues necessary and it said “follow up with Jorleif about the investigation”, there’s an arrow above his head…but there’s no dialogue option to tell him you completed the investigation…therefore I can’t complete this quest!😒 PLEASE HELP!

The single biggest problem with this quest seems to be people looting the fliers from one of the boxes in the house, but forgetting or not seeing the amulet. That single thing causes a lot of problems.

I recommend doing this: Try starting the quest normally, enter windhelm through the main gate, between 7pm and 7am, go to the quest place if the guard is not there Go to the other gate and take a boat to solstheim, wait there about 10 hours and then go back to skyrim with fast travel, If it's not between 7pm and 7am, wait a few hours until it is, then enter windhelm through the docks gate and head to the cemetery. This worked for me, I recommend trying

Detail: do the quest as early as possible in a save, as killing any windhelm guard can make it impossible to do the quest, and continuing the civil war too much as an imperial can also make it impossible to do the quest.

3 years later, there's still a problem with this quest not wanting to progress, I always get stuck on looking for clues, writing the console command for completing the quest doesnt do anything either as the quest still remains even when ita registered as finished xD Bathesda, please test games before releasing them xD I solve it by just avoiding Windhelm all together haha

I know on Oblivion I had to enter console mode to broken quest from my quest log. At this point glitches are part of Bethesda's business model. You walk into a meeting and the arm chair flips out and jumps out the window.

The video is similar to my outcome. But after going into Hjerim I finished up fetching all the clues... it still tells me to go to Jarleif tho... (also found the 3rd journal in the killers chest. HELP PLEASE)

Still stuck, I already investigated the house and got the amulet, spoke to the guy and sold the amulet to him. The two markers are still stuck in the same spot and Jorleif is useless.

I was stuck at exactly the same spot. When back to the house and picked up ALL of the butcher notes, went to Jorlief and the next dialogue option finally opened up.

You need to not enter the killers house first but get the objective to search it then the mission should play out good but if not finding evidence should trigger the talk with the old lady about the butcher..then she'll tell you to tell the steward then youl find another body to continue the story but the amulet unless u sold it to the guy they told you to ask about it idk what happens to it but if you did sell it to him when you kill the killer he will have it on

Hello i am facing another bug with this quest to which i could not find a solution in internet So i go to the house investigate clues, find journals and amulet talk to that viola and then when i come back to caste i start to talk with magician the dialogue option about the journal appears but then the dialogue option about amuled does not, which actually should appear, then i try to talk to that dude near the jarl throne, i accuse the magician but then he says that it is a serious accusation but i do not hace enough evidence for this But i have the amulet so there should be appear a dialogue about the amulet which does not while i have it So i dont know how to fix that weird problem Some quests in skyrim r soo buggy and frustrating So does anyone know how to fix it?

the main issue is the game itself consuses you. if they just said figure it out that would be one thing. but instead they put tons of markers on your screen that are borderline useless. they spin you in circles. if they just said figure out the murder with no markers it would be easier.

I can only really comment on what happened in my game and what I did... the "Blood on the Ice" Quest is pretty notoriously known as one of the most glitchy buggy piece of work in the game. If this didn't help... I'm not sure, keep looking friend, I'm sorry. :(

Sun, Feb, 28, 21 and im having a hard time getting this quest to start. I'm using mods and using the patch mod but nothing seems to get it to start and I followed all protocol. I'm playing on Xbox one the elder scrolls V special person edition and any help would be greatly appreciated 9

It's possibly you'll just have to wait and allow it to start when it sees fit. I tried a patch but still had the same problem. Then yesterday, I was just wandering through and it triggered, with no patch.

i play skyrim special edition on xbox without mods, and i managed to solve it basically like this: Try starting the quest normally, (enter windhelm through the main gate, between 7pm - 7am). Go to the cemetery, if don't have the murder scene go to the other dock gate and buy a ticket to solstheim, wait something like 10 hours there and go back to skyrim using fast travel. Check the time, if it's not between 7pm-7am wait until then. Then simply enter windhelm through the dock gate (no fast travel) and see if it worked

Remembering, there is no way to do the quest if you have completed the civil war as an imperial, and killing a windhelm guard can make it impossible to start

What bothers me about this quest apart from the buggy mess is that the game forcefully directs you to suspect the Court Wizard for the murders. You only ever need to find one of the two journals located in Hjemir and the game pats you on the back for "solving" it all. Hurr durr journal about Necromancy duur durr only wizard here is the Court Wizard and someone told me he is a little bit odd so he must be a murderer right? You don't even have to find the Necromancer's amulet in Hjemir and the quest doesn't recognize you missing it at all.

I've never noticed that this quest was buggy before. After doing it the first time and accusing the Court Wizard and learning later it wasn't him, I decided to do more investigating in the next playthrough. Both times I found the amulate and was directed to Calitxo to identify it that tells me its the Court Wizard's amulate. This time instead of accusing him I confronted the Court Wizard and he says whomever told me the amulate belonged to him was either an idiot or lying because it's not his and that it's actually the Necromancers Amulate. This prompted me to investigate Calitxo which lead to me finding his Butcher journal so this time I could accuse him instead.

No one tells you how to get rid of the amulet after you've completed the Quest for whatever reason it doesn't have the enchantment on it so it says I cannot discard a quest item I finish the quest calixco go is dead help me please I'm tired of looking at it in my inventory the quest is done

Quest items often glitch out and get stuck in your inventory. After I was done playing through Skyrim again I had to go look up console commands to remove the items. (A luxury I'm aware console users don't have)

@@atratzuetcetera yea it's hard to explain. But the part it asks to speak with the guard. The guard is simply not there. The location marker just points to the ground where the guard is suppose to be. Only the surrounding witnesses are there.

There is an ancient, well-known tradition incorporated into just about every murder mystery out there. It's called the "Red Herring". Those markers that lead nowhere? Those are the red herrings of this story. ("clever" Bethesda) I think they imagined themselves very clever to do this. Of course, within the context of this game, useless map markers are NOT clever. They're a huge pain in the ass and serve only to increase your anger at the pricks who did this. Oh, well. What did we expect from Bethesda.
