I loved that Jumpmaster - laid back, casual - just another day at the office. I was surprised to see you had a green light for nearly 50 seconds before you were given the command to go. I couldn't help but think of night jumps I had made where the only light inside the fuselage was the red light at the door - that eerie red glow. Then, after going thru the jump commands, waiting anxiously for the light to turn green and the shuffle toward the door. Good times, eh! Having served in the 101st in the 1960s I had the honor of serving with some of the men who had made their combat jumps during WWII. Lifers, we called 'em. Today I recognize them for the heroes that they really were. My First Sgt., Orville "Snuffy" Jones - HHC 2/506, was one of those men. He had two brass stars affixed to his Jump Wings, symbolizing the two combat jumps he had made - Normandy and Holland. Snuffy only stood about 5' 9" but he was one of the tallest men I ever met! Not in stature but in character. His fatigues were always heavily starched and sharply creased. He always gave us the same payday talk about the perils of Clarksville and the women who would do their best to separate us from our hard earned jump pay - an extra $55 a month. I can only recall him making one comment about his jump over France. It was his response to the query; "Weren't you scared to jump out of that plane that night?" He responded; "Hell no! I couldn't wait to get out of that goddamned aircraft because we were taking so much groundfire that it sounded like we were inside of a popcorn machine!" I'm nearly 75 years old now and I have a much greater respect for those brave souls who were willing to give their all that we might live in freedom. Thank you, Sidney, for making this video. I envy you the jump you got to make at this historic site. Please accept a snappy airborne salute from this old Trooper! Currahee!

Enjoyed the Video. Understand it was a "Hollywood" jump - No rucksack, weapons, ammunitions, hostile fire...They showed current MC1 (steerable) vs T10B parachutes. Leaving from a C-47 you had a 5 (five) foot extension to the Static Line to clear the aircraft elevator. It appears they left from 1500-1800 feet vs 500 feet in Normandy. Remember, Pathfinders already on the Ground. My memories from 58 years ago. Go Army - Beat Navy

@@franzelbert259 yeah, but they didn't take very long at all to reload, and they could place the flak rounds more accurately in the air than a machine gun, Also with the flak they didn't have to hit them directly, it could be several feet away, and still hit the trooper with shrapnel, or even damage his parachute, maybe not damage it bad enough to render it completely ineffective, but damage it bad enough to speed up his descent enough that he breaks his legs, back or some other bodily damage when he landed

@@chriswest5360 There were only 100 8.8cm guns in France vs 1500 panzers and tens of thousands of machine guns. A paratrooper would have to be very unlucky to run into one. The other 20,000 8.8cm flak were either at home or deployed in Africa or the eastern front where they were much more useful owing to the flat terrain and lack of dense hedgerows and trees. Even the artillery guns at Brecourt manor that are commonly said to be 8.8cm flak were actually 10.5cm howitzers.

My Great grandfather was a para trooper that landed in Normandy right after the invasion and was on the front lines and he survived he said he saw a tiger 1 tank and a panzer 4

If he was a paratrooper he landed in Normandy before the rest of the invasion around midnight.

War is a molister running Free and a place were no one else should go. But from time to time a fool gets into power and young men walk into the valley of death at times never seen again. Bless all Who walk on the battlefield with true hearts for some are no more than kids. But leave as men

Today we will go over a variety of non-optimal parachute functions. Inversions, cigarette rolls, line-outs, totals. And my personal favorite, the Mae West.

A buddy of mine, canadian paratrooper, said he was having a few one day in the mess. Guy's counting their jumps in the usual pissing contest. One old guy sitting there with a paratrooper ensign. So one of the guys asked, "How many jumps you got?" Old guy, "one" "One?" "Yup, Normandy" Buddy said you could hear a pin drop. Edit: it was 11/11
@sidneytopf Жыл бұрын
I doubt it! He would have gone to Jump school and had at least five. Most had more after for training before the jump. Good story though.
@graham2631 Жыл бұрын
@sidney topf well of course, he had more than one jump. As did all of the guys there. But only one that counted. Old guy probably decided to join the pissing contest and won hands down. I grew up with WWll vets and they played stuff down. Here's to Fred and all the pieces we couldn't find, that sort. I went to a private school whose chaplain was a conscience objector. He was a medic he jumped with a hawthorn stick that day. Edit: l do know that most just had practice jumps from structures mimicking the speed you hit at 18mph l believe. I wouldn't be surprised if combat was the first jump for some guys.
