Blood transfusion: Setup and Transfusion (2023 update)

This video demonstrates the process of setting up, verifying, and transfusing a unit of blood using a plum 360 pump, and a secondary y type tubing set. Changes from the previous (2021) version of this video include updates to the verification process utilizing the new labeling techniques seen at Trinity Health Livonia, and programing changes for the plum 360 that came with a library update.

Some people say squeezing the filter might break it. Anyone knows a reliable reference that would clarify that? Directives from manufacturer says to «squeeze drip chamber», and squeezing only above filter is not possible, so I guess it's safe but I would like to confirm. ICU Medical has not responded yet. Thank you

I Can only speak from experience, but at my facility there have been no reported incidents of the filter breaking. The filter is flexible in this product. I have seen filters that were more rigid and contained so they were not able to compress, but with those you would need to put effort into squeezing the filter and it would be a logical outcome that you would break it.
