Have you ever looked at Gerhman's eyes by zooming in the camera? He has beastly eyes, and i cannot remember who I saw this from, cutting off the left leg was a failed yet considered way to stop the beastly scourge. I personally believe he is a beast. My theory to his nightmare form is pretty simple. He was the first cleric beast in life, so he's one in the after life. He's on fire to symbolize how he got in the nightmare to begin with, burning old yharnam to the ground, being marked blood drunk by proxy. I don't have a reason why he drops beast embrace but I don't believe he is the bloodletting beast. It probably would make more sense if he wasn't in the dlc. Why would the game say he was the first cleric beast, but be the bloodletting beast in life, but turn back to a cleric beast in the nightmare

The bloodletting beast is a form of cleric beast. Any prominent church member who becomes a beast is a cleric beast. His form in the nightmare is symbolic. It was not his true form in life. During the bloodletting beast's third phase, its head is removed and a parasite rears its head, which means that the host of the body had already been deceased. Laurence died when the parasite took over and so he took shape in the nightmare.

pena No, it isn’t. Look at the shape of the skull in the Grand Cathedral and look very hard. It is extremely similar to the Bloodletting Beast, even matching the massive crack on the left side. Also, if you look at the cleric beast’s face in the pre-rendered cinematic on the main menu(it’s the best look you’ll get), It is very, very different from the the skull in the grand cathedral, and how can the skull be visible and at the same time have the cleric beast still standing in the same room.

But in the dream, where we find him as a cleric beast on fire, that is his own representation of himself within the dream. He is on fire because he is burning for instigating the burning of old Yharnham. And he takes on the look of the cleric beast, because (this is my own theory) he may have had a close friend or a loved one, who turned into a cleric beast. So he takes that form part of his own guilt and horror of his actions and what happened because of it.

Laurence is my favorite character in bloodborne, which is why my character is made after him. He was smart, but ambitious which led to him doing anything he could just so he could be as loved and successful as willem. But he went down a more dangerous path which led to him ending up in the hunters nightmare where if he was just more patient... He wouldn't have been suffering for eternity.

I always thought that Byrgenwerth was built on the Pthumerian tombs. In the game there is a hatch inside of the building that reminds me of the chalice dungeon tomb hatches. You can't use it, but it's in the corner when you enter the building on the shortcut side of Byrgenwerth building. Even after 5 years this game give me a headache putting all the pieces together. i like to think that laurences skull in the real world is shaped the way it is due to it being a midtransformation between a human and a cleric beast, and maybe at that stage laurence had very little humanity left but wasnt fully beast-like, which is why brador considers killing him a betrayal. the laurence in the nightmare is a fully realised cleric beast as a representation of who he became and who he was on the inside, and is being eternally punished for his sins as represented by his headache, being on fire and the nails in his body

I really enjoyed this video, thank you for making it. I'm playing through Bloodborne for the first time right now, and everything in the lore made sense to me up until Lawrence's skull and the cutscene of him and Wilhelm. Your video on Cainhurst also really helped me understand that as I was going through it. I just got into this series when DS3 came out, and videos like yours and Vaati's convinced me to pick up Bloodborne after I finished my first Souls game. Thank you.

My only issue with this theory is that Lawrence's skull specifically states he became the first cleric beast, not a bloodletting beast. Though it could be possible that maybe bloodletting beasts are an earlier stage of beast hood like how those smaller beasts in old yarhnam might be a precursor to the larger wolf like beasts.

Personally from the description of the ailing loran chalice it seemed to be saying that the scourge of beasthood came from the abuse of blood not as a way to solve issues. The tragedy is the people becoming beasts the land was ailing because of their growing dependence

It makes sense, their transformation was the result of basically overdosing on the mutagenic Blood that can completely rid someone of all their ailments in a single dose. In Bloodborne, blood contains memories of the person or being from whom it came, and it's possible that it's only at the point where you start to lose yourself in the torrent of foreign memories that you become a true monster. Looking at the suspicious beggar though could suggest that it's possible for anyone who's taken enough blood to transform of their own will, and only when you lose yourself and become mad or feral are you irreversibly changed. It could even be that it's kind of like a pressure valve; if the pressure keeps rising because you're taking larger and larger doses without winding down between hits, it eventually overwhelms the vessel and it bursts. It is part of the key to ascension, but it requires wisdom (Insight), the patience to not be too hasty, and not fear, but rather respect, because if misused it can also be the key to self-destruction, and fear might cause apprehension and subsequently cause the previously mentioned burst, by sealing the valve as the rise in pressure becomes constant and unstoppable.

I like the clarification about being alive in a dream and being dead elsewhere, it's incredibly simple but I hadn't given it much thought. We have to touch the corpse of Mensis to enter his nightmare, and Maria tells us that a corpse should be left alone, either in an attempt to protect the hamlet or to warn you from your wanton exploration of dreams. Something that kind of throws things off for me though is that the Chalice dungeons aren't physically entered from what we consider "the waking world". No matter what, even if they are their own separate dreams, they're disjointed from the Hunters Nightmare so I suppose it still makes sense for Laurence to exist in three places simultaneously (skull in cathedral, fire cleric in nightmare, bloodletting beast in the dungeons). I guess I'm just confused as to what the chalice dungeons are or where and when the exist as opposed to Laurences supposed multiple appearances. Anyway great video as always, happy holidays mate.

Great video ! I personally really dont think that the Bloodletting Beast has anything to do with Laurence, especially if you read the Laurence's Skull description. Plus the form that we take with the rune is just the form of a basic beast in my opinion, just because of a supposed similar apparence doesnt mean its him either. I mean, it could be the Abhorrent Beast too... maybe lol. I'll agree with the part that Maria could see herself with the rakuyo tho... and so Laurence would normally be a normal Cleric Beast, but he see's himself in fire in the dream. This looks more right to me.

I've had the theory that Laurence was a much more corrupt person that we first thought. He saw the opportunity to become a renown figure in Yharnam after discovering the blood, but since Willem was not for it, he took it to the School of Mensis where Micolash and his scholars had some sort of ailment (The ashen blood) that could be unleashed onto the people at the prospect of the old blood eradicating the ailment. Now whether Micolash was with that idea, or was possibly blackmailed into surrendering their disease (Mensis being a scientific institution would have been seen as controversial in their secular society) is up for interpretation, but Laurence must have thought he had it all figured out. That is until the true consequence of the blood ministration began to take form.

There seems to be two distinct strains of the old blood and a potential third. Laurence's strain causes lycanthropy while Cainhurst's strain causes vampirism. We can see correspondence of these effects from the blood vials we receive from Adella, Arianna, and Adeline. It makes sense that strains received from Adeline and Adella feature the same improved healing effect in contrast to the stamina improvement by Arianna's blood. Under Alfred's account, a Byrgenwerth scholar is responsible for the Vilebloods. This could mean that the Vilebloods possess the original strain from Byrgenwerth. This lines up with the similarities between the Pthumerians and the Vilebloods. Since we only know Laurence to have experimented with the blood, it's thus plausible that he is responsible for inventing the lycanthropy strain. Furthermore, the improved healing ability seems conducive to the goals of his church. The final supporting detail is how Laurence's church was able to produce a substance that is exclusively toxic to Vilebloods. I'm not sure if Laurence himself was responsible for this or whorver commissioned Ludwig was. While I think that the vampirism strain is the original one, I think it's possible Cainhurst has also experimented with the blood they took. This would suggest a third origin strain from Byrgenwerth but I don't have any evidence that indicates that Byrgenwerth produces beasts that are neither vampires nor lycanthropes, for that is exactly the kind of evidence we would require to reach this conclusion. In conclusion, Laurence is responsible for lycanthropy, and every "beast" is derived from his strain. Byrgenwerth and Cainhurst likely share the same strain that causes vampirism instead. The two strains theory is further supported by the fact that the healing church was able to produce a poison for the Vilebloods that didn't affect Yharnamites.

I believe the chalice dungeons exist in a state of stasis, and once someone has visited the place in it's physical form at a certain time; they will be locked within the dungeon regardless of their current position as the place becomes a chalice dungeon. That's how Queen Yharnam is pregnant in the dungeon but has already birthed everywhere else, for example.

I found that theory of what a character may become in the hunter's nightmare is their own visual perspective on themselves a very interesting theory, after all it is in some cases a dream. I understand Laurence and Lady Maria on their visual perspective, but the one that catches my interest is Ludwig. I've seen the Ludwig video and loved it, but was curious about his mental perspective.

Ludwig is ashamed of what he've become, he was put aside etc...So I think it makes sense to him to be represanting in the nightmare as his beastly form, killing everybody who enters his cell, the beast taking over his mind for eternity... The Moonsword is the only thing capable of remembering him his glorious past as the holy blade, hero and first hunter of the healing church. Maria appears in the state she was during the attack on thé village probably, she feels guilty so it makes sense to find her where she killed herself, with her appearance from that shamefull night. Laurence is the more complicated one yes, my theory is that he really was the first Cleric Beast, killed by Brador. ( Maybe that's why he is kept in a cell, he killed the first vicar and knows too much so he remains hidden in the nightmare ) He appears in fire due to his guilt and failure about the old Yharnam. Everything is left to anybody's mind so...I suppose there are many acceptables theories.

Design wise the beast forms are 100% abominations, but strangely there's an order to it(although that idea maybe stretching a bit). How ever, Ludwig's beast form is more chaotic than all the others.

@@willbessing4846 Yeah that's true. I think this choice of design for Ludwig helps to be empathetic. Ludwig the Holy Blade, the hero of the healing church, legendary hunter after Gehrman becoming the most ideous ans chaotic beast encountered in the game. Like a symbol of his downfall and his shame ( The fact that he seems to be melted with horses can be a hint at his "heroic holy knight" status in his past. It is ironic and a freaking good choice of design to keeping elements from his former self but this time to show them in a hideous and terryfing way ). His body is as chaotic as his mind, we see him first as the ugly beast he looks like and in Phase 2 we see him as the human and hero he was and still is deep inside thanks to his bond with the Moonlight Sword. I agree, they worked very well on Ludwig. From his design to the music, the voice actor, the boss fight...Just by looking at him you can make deductions, everything have a meaning. Ludwig probably is the most human beast we encountered throughout the game, despite his design being an absolute living nightmare. ( in a good way ahah ).

I really dislike Laurence being the bloodletting beast theory this theory was so popular and I always thought it was stupid. I personally think people just dont want to admit they are wrong there is little to absolutely no evidence Laurence is in anyway connected to the bloodletting beast and we see him in the dlc. The Bloodletting beast is fought before with a head, something alot of people seem to forget. I also don't know how he would make it into a chalice dungeon after becoming a beast, not to mention his skull is very different in shape thab the Bloodletting Beast's head. The chalice dungeons are farther back in time the deeper you go. That's why u fight queen yarhnam still being pregnant with mergo. The only other places we see her are in the lake by room which is like a nightmare pocket alternate plane of existence and in the nightmare menis which is another plane of existence. So with that logic we can think that the bloodletting beast could be Laurence also. He's headless. We know the head by vicar Amelia is his and looks more like the bloodletting beast than the cleric beast. We also know he went to the chalice dungeons looking for mergo to bring back the moon prescense and gerhman. So why can't he be both beasts? Also amygdala and room are found in the chalice's and their nightmare areas also. There's a lore reason for that and not just to fight cool bosses or recycled bosses because they were too lazy to create new bosses. So there's more characters/bosses in multiple places than just Laurence. It's not fool proof but the evidence shows it very well could be. Jsf has shown this evidence and communicates it better than me

Above all other senses smell is one that is most used and most crucial in insect colonies. Pheromone trails are left by insects like bees and ants to lead others to food, water, or back to the nest. Also in some species it's the pheromone smell that can even do things like change the makeup of some of the hive if it is lacking in specific tasks. If a queen is lost the pheromone smell of healthy active potential mates that are unable to breed that work to unlocking a change in a normal larva into becoming a queen. I believe smell and the hive mentality is a large part of the beast plague in Bloodborne. Many know your a hunter or even that you are an hunter of the dream by calling you "moon scented" like those that share in blood ministration have heightened smell awareness of such things also sharing in a unseen bond like a hive. Also when you take on the thirds of the umbilical cord when the moon presence draws close I believe it's your smell that forced it to recoil and grow aggressive. Plus what keeps the beasts from entering the church (and a hint the beggar was a beast) is the smell of the burning incense that acts like a repellent. Also the way beasts alone seem animalistic and only using instincts, but when you come across beasts that had the insight thus got closer to the cosmos and great ones they seem more intelligent acting more with emotions and less like a rabid dog similar to how one ant isn't capable of much but the colony can accomplish great things. This is my thoughts on it and how Laurence ties in is I believe his name is meant to be a hint of the insect idea and a joke on the lore community how like a insect colony we each don't have much of an idea of what the story the lore is trying to tell us but as a networking community we have came up with many insightful ideas. That's right Laurence is meant to sound like "lore ants" working to piece together the stories told in the Soulsborne series. And yes that's a lot of work to end with a jokey pun but i regret nothing!

Ludwig and Vicar Amelia are also cleric beasts; it's just an (exceptionally grotesque, generally) beast that a cleric turned into.

I not buying into Laurence being the bloodletting beast. Biggest thing for me is the fact that the beast embrace rune transforms you into a beast similar to the cleric beast. I also think that Fromsoft wouldn't have gone through the trouble of new animations for the cleric beast. As for the skull I think this is more down to Fromsoft not planning ahead much like the Nameless King statue. Also the headless bloodletting beast parasite reminds me of those worms that come from the sliverbeasts.

I don't buy into it 100% myself, believe me. It's a very shady area of the story and I'm not perfectly confident in saying it one way or the other. This is generally why I like to stick to the more confirmable aspects of the lore, instead of the speculative stuff. That being said, an episode on Paleblood is coming up.

I know this may be a stretch, but if it contains any truth, it could implicate several new theories. The "parasite" inside the Bloodletting Beast resembles a large vermin. It seems you collect vermin from greater beast and those that most likely received blood administration. You find the Bloodletting Beast deep within the dungeons, so it had plenty of time to feed and grow. Maybe Valtr understands this, which is why he implores you to collect and destroy them. Who knows though, just a thought.

it doesnt, the parasite in the headless bloodletting beast looks like a worm/maggot, if you read the description of vermin it states "creature that resembles a centipede" and if you look at the picture of the vermin, that and the parasite within the bloodletting beast look nothing alike
