Mostly it is an irrational personal belief, but it was him and his kin that first unleashed the old one, and resealed it at the cost of half the world. i believe he told Allant about the old one, the soul arts and everything else because he would of had to go through the Nexus to get to the old one, and i believe that door right at the top of the stairs was how he entered. This would then logically lead to him being responsible. I have no reason to believe he is "holding the world together" and he gives you little to no help or information throughout despite wanting the demons eradicated. Even Patches and Freke provided more support and by the end the latter wanted the demons to take over but he still assists you. What does he have to lose by demons consuming everything he will gain and lose nothing in fact he will be freed from his shell. Even if his intentions are true hes just training you as a replacement monumental. I have no proof but it is my opinion. I dont believe the Old one was the true evil as it was just hungry and deliberately woken from its nap, it doesn't know what its doing. Claiming it is evil is like claiming a lion is evil for eating Gazelles As for Allant i think he just went insane seeing the inevitability that the old one would destroy all his psyche just shattered and he become nihilistic. I dont even think Mephistopheles was evil, he was just trying to keep the soul arts a secret.

Interesting that Laurence is a real easy boss to miss, and is in no way necessary to fight in order to complete the DLC. Since the Hunter's Nightmare is a punishment brought on by Kos, you could argue that killing the bosses trapped there is a mercy killing. All of the other bosses are in some way victims. Ludwig genuinely thought he was doing the honourable thing and just wanted to help people; the Living Failures were just random patients transformed into horrible mutants; Lady Maria turned her back on the hunters in remorse after what happened in the Fishing Hamlet; and The Orphan is just a baby. Laurence on the other hand is responsible for everything that happened to Yharnam despite being told it was too much of a risk. Since death would be a mercy, it's up to the player whether or not he deserves that mercy, or he deserves to keep burning in the nightmare.
@mauelo69104 жыл бұрын
What i find an intriguing detail about laurence which many people don't usally debate about is that he's on fire or differently put, his blood has become lava. There is a question whether or not it was a case after he became a beast or after he was sent into the hunter's nightmare. The latter makes more sense from certain perspective: Laurence was the one who enraged kos the most (for example he could be the one delivering the death blow to orphan or be in charge of the hunter's group who invaded the hamlet) and as ultimate punishment he was granted the fiery blood which would put him in constant state of agony for all the eternity given the fact that he's stuck in hunter's nightmare forever, quite fitting metaphor of "burning in hell".
@plutohendrix29414 жыл бұрын
Mauelo with the bosses they’re usually the same as they were in life when they died. i assume he turned into a cleric beast and was put down by being burned to death as fire is how all the yharnamites killed beasts
@plutohendrix29414 жыл бұрын
Mauelo but also there’s no reason he’d still be in agonizing pain constantly burning in the “afterlife” so then it also ties in with kos’s punishment
@VenezuelanEagle3 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is a year old but I just wanted to throw in some things. The whole mess in Yharnum is the fault of 3 men: Willem, Micolash, and Laurence. They all desired mankind to ascend to their next stage in evolution faster than what was natural and they did it their own way (hence Laurence breaking off from Willem). Micolash, on the other hand, wanted the "next stage" and power that came wit it fo himself and his followers instead of the improvement of mankind like the other 2. The whole fishing hamlet incident was orchestrated by Willem; he sent Maria, Laurence, Ghernam, etc. to find eyes within the residents. The School of Mensis under Micolash orchestrated the genocide of Ya'hargul, the desecration of corpses in Hemwick Lane under the witch cult, and the kidnapping of residents fo experimentation. The Choir under Willem/Laurence experimented on everybody, especially children in the orphanage, to create Great Ones and ended up mass producing the kin enemies found in Yharnum. All Laurence did by himself was bring about the scourge of beasts through abuse of the Old Blood acquired from Ebrietas
@AnnoyingJason2 жыл бұрын
@@VenezuelanEagle The Choir wasn't under Willem though, was it? The Choir wass a high-ranking branch of the Healing Church, and we all know that that was founded by Laurence AFTER splitting with Willem.

Laurence pushed for the usage of Blood Ministration to get closer to the Eldritch Truth. But the Scourge of Beasts overtook those who took too much blood and Willem seemed to have predicted the issue of using blood. Old Yharnam burnt to the ground because of the blood ministration's errors and the symptom of Ashen Blood was the cause of it, all leading back to Laurence. Fitting that Laurence burns for eternity after turning into a beast himself.

I think that 2:06 represents the mind of Laurence as an apprentice, calm and without influence of the blood, as you hear by the solo voice and violin reciting a "creed", being a soft thing to hear. 2:25 It's become more 'caotic', with the add of more instruments, turning it 'disturbing', as if Laurence was start to feeling the effects of overusing the blood, but almost unnoticed. The creed-like thing start to be just a little overshadowed by the instruments. 2:44 It explodes when more instruments is added, so shockable that it's almost do you forgot about everything you heard before this by being so "different". But it's unnerving to hear, it's so chaotic and disturbing, causing a sensation of fear. Laurence sure was afraid to everything that he did and that was happening to whoever used the blood, but the exposition was already did, there was no coming back to that "peace". The creed continues. 3:03 The tranquility comes, peaceful, brings heals to ears, you dont even hear the creed anymore. But this is not a calm tranquility, note that a dissonance from another instruments soon happens, Laurence was already drunk past limit. What the hunters become when they are drunk? Beasts, thristy for blood. Laurence was feeling the same. The calm represents him accepting what he was going to be. So the progression feels like "you're" being well received to whatever thing you would to transform, like nothing but good things. Nothing but escape from death. But in the end we know what happened to the clerics, right? 3:41 Right here its just caotic, you cant stand hearing it anymore, you just want it to end! Note that now the creed came back, but it is like a festival, SANGUINE SANCTA! This is Laurence beging this to end, he is suffering like he never suffered. All he want is silence. Its angustiating to hear this, but it sounds so festival!! You want to stop, but you just cant do you do it. Myself repeat just this part a lot, it's addicting, i'm liking this so much more right know. To me this is the music represeting Laurence's mind behind his demise. English is not my first languange and i never did a learning. Sorry for grammaticaly errors. Thank you to the KZbinrs T B Skyen and Davi Vasc who made me feels like more "sensitive" about things and music or context which represent that thing.

@ToxicallyMasculinelol9 жыл бұрын
god damn that almost made me cry, maybe its just because i know the story and can kind of understand the emotion the song is trying to convey, but god DAMN this is one of the best scores i have ever heard. its just exactly the sort of vibe bloodborne is built on, total fear, cosmic horror, mystery, and tragedy. and this theme in particular really conveys the tragedy of laurence, the total replacement of his consciousness with beasthood, while still conveying the immense power of the beast you're tasked with destroying. it's utterly perfect
@josiahyork82279 жыл бұрын
+Toxically Masculine it really kinda reminds me of Alex Roe's Fall of Artorias remix, only darker and more terrifying. But the emotional parts stand out just as well. Everything aspect of this theme is wonderfully balanced, and probably one of the few things From manages to perfectly balance if you know what I mean.
@7Kagutsuchi79 жыл бұрын
+Toxically Masculine Thank god for you putting that into words. I was capable of understanding the tragedy part, but I couldn't musically understand everything else. You put a lot of context on this song for me. This part specifically -- "this theme in particular really conveys the tragedy of laurence, the total replacement of his consciousness with beasthood, while still conveying the immense power of the beast you're tasked with destroying."
@blklee5g5529 жыл бұрын
+Toxically Masculine I think it conveys the mistake Laurence, and his associates made by using blood. Willem says "Our eyes have yet to open". Meaning humans can't physically perceive the entire spectrum of reality. We have to find another way to perceive reality on a more grander scale. Willem's path was to gain "Insight". "Insight" stemming from the word "Intuition" which means to immediately apprehend things without the need of conscious reasoning. Basically utilizing the collective unconscious mind, which is suppose to be far superior than the conscious mind when it comes to apprehension. That's why Willem meditated, and wore blindfolds to look "within". This method takes years and years of practice and effort. One of the results were Caryll Runes. They granted what would appear as "supernatural" powers when the individual's mind focuses on a particular symbol. Since the unconscious is purely subjective, it conveys things through symbols and feelings. Making it difficult for science to work with because science is purely objective, using numbers and facts based on physical evidence. Willem had a hunch that using blood would be bad. Laurence and his associates grew arrogant as most brilliant minds become, and ignored their hunches. They tried to use blood to actually hasten human evolution using more practical methods. The result is that it causes lifeforms to degrade into ghastly creatures (Beast/Kin).
@lucasbiagi34589 жыл бұрын
+Blklee 5G I dont think kin come from drinking the blood, but from insight actually, and some sort of communion with a Great One. As Micolash says "like you once did for the Vacuous Rom, grant us eyes, grant us eyes" when talking about Kos (which at the time we thought was a word for the cosmos, but it is actually revealed to be the Great One who gives birth to Orphan of Kos in the DLC). The blood, I assume, it mutates humans into beasts either because of some incompatibility or a curse laid on it to take revenge on the Healing Church branch of the Byrgenwerth Academy.
@marshallcarpenter25349 жыл бұрын
+Lucas Biagi All of Byrgenwerth is what was cursed, not specifically the church as that is what came afterwards when Laurence left with the old blood to glean what he could from it. I take it both Master Willem and Laurence knew of this curse, but that Laurence either thought he could overcome it or cared not for superstition.

Personally, Bloodborne made me 'feel' for a lot of the bosses, more than the those in the Souls series. Obviously Sif and Artorias make me want to curl up into a ball and cry like a baby, but other then them not really. Like with Bloodborne you have Ludwig, a great hero (similar to Artorias) who is now nothing but a mindless beast, and when you talk to his head he says he only wanted his hunters to be 'honorable spartans' (i didn't have the heart to tell him no). Laurence, a man too pig-headed for his own good, just wanted to help people, but he messed with crap not meant to be messed with, and became a beast that in my eyes is almost reminiscent of Sif, you injure his legs and he falls over before eventually falling off completely, I felt like I was putting a rabid dog out of its misery more than anything( not to say Sif was a rabid dog mind you) Gehrman, who was there since the beginning, taking the burden to be bound to the dream upon himself, killing hunters so they wouldn't have to suffer as he does. Hell even Rom, the big bitch she is, a person who became a Great One and lost all sense (In the Japanese version her name literally means 'the retarded spider' correct me if I'm wrong) and now her only purpose is to sit in the middle of a lake doing nothing. And Logarius, true he was probably a bit radical in his actions, but he chose to condemn himself to undeath in the freezing cold to make sure no one found the Queen. FromSoft's feel points are OP as hell. I know it's a long comment, sorry just felt I should say it. :)
@elevate078 жыл бұрын
+Aknaught92 Laurence is more Manus than Sif. One of the originators of the nightmare that exists in the present day. Formerly powerful (Manus was more raw power while Laurence was influence) today they're nothing but mindless monsters endlessly looking for something special to them. For Manus it was the pendant, for Laurence it's his skull. But in both scenarios their hopes died long ago and now they're only the epicenter for the tragedy and destruction that have waylaid their respective worlds. The difference between Dark Souls and Bloodborne is that in Dark Souls the catastrophe that is the Dark was unavoidable. Everyone was just doing everything they could to stop or delay it. In Bloodborne the catastrophe of Yharnam was entirely of their own making and Laurence and Willem have no one to blame but themselves.
@Aknaught928 жыл бұрын
True I just meant the fight itself, you damage Laurence's legs, he falls over trying to attack you. Hurt him enough and his legs fall off completely. The more you damage Sif, he starts limping, falling over that sort of thing. That's what I meant, but I totally agree with the Manus comparison.

The man who set everything in motion, the student from Byrgenwerth, the creator of the healing church responsible for pretty much everything that ever happened in the game, possibly the biggest and most important character lore wise is the most optional of all optional bosses of the game. So much that even when you first encounter him he can't even attack, so much that you have to actively look for some item hidden in the underground of a cathedral to trigger his boss fight.

Poor Laurence. Created such a good religion in Yharnam.
@elevate078 жыл бұрын
+Rasputin The Savior Good religion? I'm sorry but no. He knew from the jump that the Old Blood was something to be feared. Swore to Willem that he would continue to fear it. And then starting passing it out like it was candy. Used Old Yharnam as an experiment site in hopes he could find a way to get past the Beasthood problem and then when it fell through he burned the town down. The beastly scourge continued to Central Yharnam and he closed the city off from Cathedral Ward. He kidnapped orphans and forced them to train in the arcane until they turned into the Celestial Hosts and the Celestial Emissary. He did all of this until he became blood addled himself, fell to the Hunter's Nightmare because of his contributions to ransacking the Fishing Hamlet, and finally turned into a Cleric Beast forced to burn nonstop for the remainder of his life. Because he was an arrogant man who messed with things far beyond his understanding and ruined the lives of everyone in Yharnam.
@marshallcarpenter25348 жыл бұрын
+elevate07 Dude, I know he was being sarcastic. Trust me, he doesn't give a damn about Laurence. Also, I disagree with many points you made, about Laurence and other things. The Powder Keg Hunters had their own agenda in burning down Old Yharnam. It may or may not have been at the behest of Laurence, however, that blood is on the Powder Kegs, Gods bless their souls. Different personalities deal with fear in somtimes outlandish ways. I believe Laurence did, indeed, fear the old blood just as he said he would. However, his fear was too much for him. He became threatened by his fear, thus he chose to face it and bring from it what he could. His experiments were cruel, there is no denying that. Fear will make man do horrid things, but, without fear, we become beasts ourselves. He eventually emraced the beast within, unable to cope with his fear.
@elevate078 жыл бұрын
Marshall Carpenter Except we see from the Healing Church his disregard for the dangers of Old Blood or at the least the fact that he didn't pass that fear down to his followers. One good bit of evidence of this is the Blood Saints. So you know the Old Blood is something to be feared and you idea of fearing it is to modify the bodies of the nuns who work for you so that they can produce Old Blood on their own and pass it out. There's also the blood vials which I guess are diluted versions of Old Blood but we can see from the Hunters that it still is completely capable of addling and mutating the people who use it. There's also Vicar Amelia's prayer in which she says to "seek the Old Blood" so that they could partake in "communion." What? I could see if Laurence thought the Old Blood was necessary for ascension to Great One status and so he did controlled experiments in isolated areas but he passed it out to all of Yharnam. Considering what he knows, or should know, about Old Blood that is completely insane. What's more the Hunters that actually executed the Church's order to burn down expressed apprehension in doing it which is why you find the note saying "is our only choice to burn it down?" So yes Laurence is even if his intentions were right. He played a very dangerous game and all of Yharnam paid for it.
@marshallcarpenter25348 жыл бұрын
+elevate07 He was willing to do anything to conquer his fear. This most likely led to his followers getting the wrong message. They saw gallantry and heroics where there were none. He continued his pursuit of the arcane as evidenced by the research hall. Many despicable things happened there, but it was all in the name of overcoming his greatest fear, the old blood, more specifically what he did not know about it. If he could have recieved the insight and guidance he wanted from the great ones, then he would have been freed from his fear. His intentions were questionable, but he did bring ruin upon that which he started. Blood vials are a different matter entirely. The only hunters that turn into actual beasts were all associated with the Healing Church institution in some way. Gascoigne, the Yharnamite hunters, the Yahar'gul hunters, Ludwig and his hunters, the Choir- -all consumed the old blood from the Church. Blood vials seem to do nothing but keep the user alive. The Powder Kegs were not necessarily working for the Church. They were their own institution; their own workshop. The one who questioned his actions I believe to be the hunter tied in the chair we get the charred hunter set from. He was most likely one of Djura's apprentices and died in his belief that these beasts were in fact people. This is also most likely the event that drove Djura to retire and leave the hunters to do their unsavory work.

I managed to translate most of the lyrics. However, I would like to remind that I still had to catch everything by ear; hence why I cannot guarantee they are absolutely correct, though I'm still quite confident. Add the fact that Latin is an obscure language as well as the fact that whoever composed this lyrics either knew a great deal about Latin, or, most likely, little to none, considering there are some rather awkward and obvious grammatical errors. That might also be the reason why they never officially released the lyrics. This is what I managed to catch myself after carefully listening to the theme once more: LATIN LYRICS: "Si filii sci te tibi vi sacramentum Erit praemium sanguine sanctum Erit praemium sanguine sanctum absconditum Vel venio humanitas tendo pendere Sanguine sanctu Honesta rete sanguine Expectare iste (should be istud) blasphemia Est vitae ita dissemino - unclear part - Honesta rete sanguine Expectare iste blasphemia A mysterio nostribus (should be nostris) Aqua vitae eo absolvis Dinotus Timere Dinotus Sanguine Timere Venenat scitis Festiva praestabile Sanguine sanctu Ita venite Iste (should be istud) vinum - unclear part -" REARRANGED LATIN LYRICS: "Filii sci te si sacramentum vi (excoles - this verb was implied when sacramenta were involved) Erit tibi sanctum praemium sanguine Erit (tibi) sanctum absconditum praemium sanguine Humanitas, venio vel tendo pendere (when tendere+inf, it means "aim at") Sanguine sanctu Honesta rete sanguine Expectare: iste (istud) est blasphemia Ita dissemino vitae - part unclear - Honesta rete sanguine Expectare: iste (should be istud) (est) blasphemia Eo absolvis aqua vitae a nostribus (nostris) mysterio Timere dinotus Dinotus sanguine Scitis timere venenat Praestabile festiva (erit) Sanguine sanctu Ita venite Iste (should be istud) vinum - part unclear -" TRANSLATED LYRICS: "Oh child, know that if you will abide with great commitment by the sacred rite You will be blessed through the blood with a holy reward You will be blessed through the blood with the holy reward that was hidden away Oh mankind, I (now) find myself depending on the holy blood, (but) this was my goal. Laurence, and his battle theme, have always fascinated me: it's been a fun and compelling work.

I love the bit at 3:03. The way it starts out all sentimental and pure, then grows gradually stronger, gradually darker, gradually more an undertone to the mounting chords, until it's almost unrecognizable. A very nice audio metaphor for the road to hell.

its still insane to me how well bloodborne's ost embodies ancient tragedy and absolute carnage. not a single track is wasted and the one reuse in the case of this song is a complete remix calling back to the first beast fight in the game

@HiddenWen9 жыл бұрын
Mynameismegalex That's my problem with it too. Is everything in the nightmare even real? I think even if they aren't exact reality, they have some relationship to what actually occurs, so Laurence being on fire has some significant symbolism.
@Mynameismegalex9 жыл бұрын
+HiddenWen You know, I just read your original comment again, and I noticed you said he started it all with the *beasts*, which is not true. The Beast Plague (if that's what you're talking about) is not related to Laurence or Yharnam for that matter.
@natgrant-haysey37139 жыл бұрын
+Mynameismegalex I thought the plague started with the ancient pthumerians who built the network of catacombs and labyrinths underneath Yharnam and kept the old blood there. Then Byrgenwerth led an expedition down there with Lawrence as one of them, down there they discovered the old blood and brought it up with them. After experimentation it was found to be a "miracle cure" and then Lawrence left Byrgenwerth and created the healing church. unless i got the backstory horribly, horribly wrong doesn't that mean he is inadvertently responsible for the entire situation in Yharnam?

Its better than Ludwigs in my opinion. Hell, it just might be the best in all the series, the buildup and the climax of the song is godlike.

Yea. While Ludwig's gets you heated up and determined, Laurence's makes you feel sympathy and sorrow, making you want to put an end to his pitiful degeneration, which imo, is alot more personal.

The Hunter’s Nightmare is such a fitting title, since everything that happens in it is the “worst case scenario” for each respective boss. For Ludwig, he lost his mind and became a vicious beast. For Lady Maria, she was forced to guard the Fishing Hamlet in an effort to prevent hunters from committing the atrocities that caused much of the Night to occur. Also, she had to use the power of the Vilebloods even though she despised it. For Laurence; not only has he become a beast, but all of those he wished to aid with the ancient blood became horrid beasts that were lost to instinct. And finally Gehrman, a man who was separated from the one he loved. He carved a doll of her, gave it life and a duty, and swore to tie himself to the Hunters’ Dream. He waits in the Dream, taking it upon himself to slay hunters (in one of the best goddamn boss fights) so they may leave the Nightmare that he aided in designing. God DAMN this game is so good.

Wow... What a great theme. That stressful still bittersweet at time cello theme mixed with the almost always present choire which tone change with great timing along with the other instruments and the sweet and dark organ melody in the back... He probably felt the scourge take over him bit by bit and knew what had to be done. So he did it. Either that or the nightmare is giving him poetic justice for his foolish actions and overuse of the blood, which led to the burning of Old Yharnam.
