@@tristan9648 Well, what is a good argument in your opinion?
@phoenixriverton69752 жыл бұрын
@@tristan9648 I think Mary had a mental disorder, but I won’t call her evil. I’ve read some articles that reveal her devotion to her country, for example she didn’t make a decision to kill Elizabeth even though she knew her half-sister would destroy her hope to bring England go back to Catholics. One of those evidence said Mary didn’t want England to be in blood like her brother, Edward, who once brought chaos to England when he appointed Jane Gray to be an heir after his death. Mary also was the first one who said the statement of Queen Regnant was the Mother of the Nation, emphasizing that women could rule the throne. If you use this reason to blame Mary in terms she killed people alive, so you should blame Elizabeth I and other kings before them, too. If Mary had reigned longer, she would have done many good things for her country. Mary I shouldn’t be misunderstood. What she must be given is forgiveness and empathy.
@phoenixriverton69752 жыл бұрын
@@tristan9648 In my opinions, there were many greatest kings, queens, empresses or emperors who killed thousands of people. You compared Mary and Hitler, so I feel their situations were different. And I just wonder if people call Elizabeth I “Bloody Lizzie” because she got rid of more people than Mary did, or they feel nothing as Elizabeth brought England to the golden age. With this point, I think a length of time plays a crucial role in representing a historical figure because Mary’s reign was too short, thus most of her developmental plans were practical in the next one. Besides, the fact that, in Elizabeth’s era, there was a big propaganda, especially many paintings that portrayed Mary was the devil while Elizabeth was the goddess. So, it was possible that the conquerer wrote her history.
@phoenixriverton69752 жыл бұрын
@@tristan9648 I didn’t want to say that what Mary did was right, but she shouldn’t be hated that much while other rulers weren’t as much blamed as her. If I support the killing of a whole group of people, I wouldn’t defend Mary, but would praise Elizabeth I - cuz Elizabeth killed a thousand ones, yet a powerful monarch. Anyway, there are many good sides in Mary’s life awaiting us to study, not the story she burned people only. Mary could have killed Elizabeth and appointed other Catholics heirs to her throne, but she knew that plan wouldn’t work since her homeland would be chaotic and she expected to make the new joint between hers and Elizabeth’s reign as peaceful as possible.

I wonder if in her place, Catherine might have done much the same thing Mary did to heretics. Catherine’s own mother, Isabella, presided over the Spanish Inquisition, which tortured, executed, and finally expelled Jews from Spain-after conveniently claiming all their property. They pursued both Muslims and Jews who had converted to Christianity in much the same way Mary pursued “heretics” in England. People like Mary, her father, and the many people who actually made the persecutions happen genuinely believed Reformers/Evangelicals (later called Protestants) were heretics who threatened the eternal souls of Christendom. This was the messy road to freedom of conscience and religious liberty!

@@sistersamich2075Yes. I was like WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS MORON (you know I mean Henry VIII, right?😂) care if she goes to her funeral or not. She doesn't count as a daughter to him anymore, she's a "lady," she doesn't live at court, she's not a valid daughter and why the hell is he controlling her when he's already marked that they're not family. And the sweet thing is that Mary was very intelligent and kind when she was younger, and then she went a little crazy with her overly religious views. She had some compassion for all but Protestants, but she had a good relationship with her last stepmother, Catherine Parr, even though she was a Protestant. Mary even asked in her will to be buried next to her mother so that they could rest together when they were separated too soon. They did not honor Mary's last wish and Elizabeth was later buried next to her. Honestly, if she lived in this time, I would have hugged her many times, she certainly didn't get much from her dad. She is a tragic person and in my opinion she is not a villain at all because every ruler has death sentences, she was not the only one to be criticized so much. They didn't even call Henry "bloody," even though he killed his two wives and was a bad father and husband and all. Some present Mary as a tragic person, but while I was researching her because I wanted to know more about her, I came across the information that Mark Twain briefly mentioned her in "The Prince and the Pauper" as a cold, strict and unfeeling woman. That was so bad for me because why didn't anyone ever vilify Henry? Also, Mark Twain is one of my favorite writers. I really like to read Tom Sawyer repeatedly when I'm bored.

I wouldn’t go that far, while it was disturbing that Mary had at least 300 people burned at the stake over the span of a reign that lasted not even a decade, Hitler had about 10,000,000 people brutally massacred and 6,000,000 of them were because they were Jewish. Also add on the fact that him invading countries launched WWII, Hitler is still a much bigger monster than Mary Tudor was.
