*IMPORTANT*: I realized later on that Career mode actually removes GUARD BREAKING ATTACKS ALONG with Air Recovery and Heavy Guard, basically **everything** is stripped away from your character. Either Konami was involved in this game's rushed development since at the time Hudson Soft was a subsidiary of Konami and thus being slowly absorbed BY Konami before being completely absorbed in 2012, or Kenji Fukuya just had a horrible idea to design this game's beast system the way that it was handled, or both. Regardless, what we got was not good. They tried to pick up what was left and make something out of it, only for a mess to be the result. Play any other BR game except this one, unless you wanna have a laugh. Bloody Roar 4 is a great example of how to not make a BR game.

Bloody Roar 3 will aways be my favorite. B1 is my 2nd favorite because I remember being introduced to it at a young age, I also think Greg, Fox and Mistsuko were great characters. Bloody Roar 4 was such a let down especially with how good Primal fury/Extreme were. It's ashame that game was the last hurrah for the series.

I still wish that Hans (Fox) and Mitsuko got their time to shine instead of just being in one game. Hans to me is more interesting then Jenny, and Nagi just looks like they took Kasumi's DOA2 model and modified it. BR4 is not just a mess, it's a very confusing mess.

Same. The negative reception towards Hans was just rooted in homophobia at the time (it was the 90s so not surprising). I actually do like Jenny but I don't see why her and Hans' couldn't co-exist, maybe give Hans some new moves since unfortunately his moveset has been fully integrated into Jenny's but either way, I'd love to see him come back. And Mitsuko, people regarded her as "too ugly" but I thought her design was unique and stood out, it gave something different when it comes to female characters in fighting games and I would love to see her come back as well. Story-wise she could just be searching for Uriko to bring her home and you know, cliche mother/daughter conflict ensues lol. And you're right, Nagi totally looks like a red-headed Kasumi from DOA. I thought her fighting style was cool and fun to paly as but I personally hated her design. There's sexy and then there's desperate and her outfit design is the latter imo, just tacky...

I am someone who mainly played bloody roar 4..when I watched older bloody roars I def felt trippy how different they were..I was like wtf are these electric move spams..and I dont remember supers chunking half hps??...def the whole beast mode being a healthbar is a HUGE change.. I do prefer the visuals/music of bloody roar 4 tho.

I didn't like Reji at first, he was the living embodiment of 2000s edginess back in the day but I loved how they were able to fit a crow into the mix of fighting and with time I eventually came around to having some fondness for him haha.

14:57 I got this game just recently out of morbid curiosity, so what im saying isnt coming from Nostalgia. Most of the complaints im hearing about this game comes from comparisons with the previous games which, is fair in that it completely changes what people might've gone to the game expecting, I dont think fully explains what the issue with the beast gauge is. Honestly, it sounds alot like 'its different from the previous games therefore its bad.' I've played BR2 but not recently at all, so I dont have that perspective. Im not seeing the issues that having the Beast gauge act as health causes. I get its different from most games, but the main issue im seeing is that matches are longer which, least in my experience, matches have not felt like they dragged at all. Might be different against human players (I'll admit most of what I've played is versus CPU's though I did play against my step-bro whos not into fighting games at all. In fact, he seemed to be into the game's pacing) but I never felt like a match went on too long. I mostly just see the Human form as a weakened state instead of Beast mode being an empowered state. If you try to be offensive in human form, you run the risk of being punished and taking un-recoverable damage in exchange for getting more Beast gauge where you're safe. Hyper Beast mode is arguably similar as you'd want to use it when you're low enough on health so there isnt a huge drawback to activating it, but thats still debatable. I dont have a good defense for Beast drives being worse than just regular combos, other than it could just be a 'flashy move' to use before you know how to combo properly. Admittedly, damage was still pretty easy to get regardless. Also I beat the Dragon on my first go through arcade mode. I died to Xion multiple times but the Dragon wasnt an issue. That being said, I didnt raise the difficulty so thats probably why. Fighting games very rarely ever have good boss fights anyways so im not shocked the fight boils down to 'wait til the boss kills itself then get the last hit in' And I'll fully admit that Career mode is bad. Locking MOVES and mechanics behind a ton of boring fights you have to play through with everyone is just super annoying. I still say unlocking new characters can be cool in these older games before DLC was a thing, but I get thats annoying for the competitive scene too. Also in full admission, I skipped the section on Career mode in this video cause I already knew it was bad so apologies if something else is covered there I didnt realize. I wanted to hear about the issues with the game mechanics so I watched the other sections. I assume Career mode is actually worse than I expected.

Bloody Roar was the first fighting game I ever played on PS1. Not even really big into the genre but I always felt like I could play this franchise without being very good at it.

Everything said in this video i can agree with i still like 4 the most because of nostalgia reasons plus i played 4 before 3 3 has a way better beast drive system but at the same time i do like the extra health bar in bw4 definitely if more time was put in it would probably be an ongoing game i really want to see it come back.

Bloody Roar should remake or make continuation by Bandai Namco, like they bought liscence from Konami and hire few former employees of Hudson Soft who experiences of creating the franchise

It always sucks to see games that had so much potential but just fell very flat for one reason or another. KInda how I feel about Enter the Dragonfly, a game like BR4, had good ideas but was rushed beyond repair and resulted in poor design choices and fatal flaws. However, I will have to try Bloody Roar 1 and 2 at some point, not much of a fighting game person but I need to quench my retro thirst. Good review my guy. 😎

Reiji was a little tricky to get the hang of but once you did, he was pretty fun. Out of the 2 newcomers, Nagi was easier to get a handle of and she was fun to play.

The game was rushed hardcore because Konami forced the dev to make the game via RenderWare engine, which ofc they're not familiar with cuz the rest of the series used Raizing engine. RenderWare was used on lots of famous fighting games. Mortal Kombat is one of them, so Konami tried to capitalize on the engine's popularity. With this game killed the franchise, if anyone still hopes Konami to revive this series, get your copium ready, cuz not only you're dealing with a dead franchise, but also modern Konami, so good luck! And on a side note, Idm Nagi was promoted to be a sex appeal (I mean Konami tried so hard to put her on commercial and stuffs), but wtf is Jenny doing there? or Alice? or Uranus? are these chicks not hot enough that you must have additional character? That's why you don't want Nagi to turn into any animal cuz you're afraid she lost her sexiness? Have you seen Jenny's beast form?

watching this video again made me wonder if the potential reboot would have the option to select between 3 Evasion types like in 4, reminding me of the grooves in cvs2. Its inclusion in 4 was probably one of the only (if any) good decisions the team made for the game.

Dragon was standing puppet. I beat it first time and on the phone lol. No stand back or guard just turn to beast, spam beast attack button and use thr ultimate that's on the button preset. I didnt knew if I lose I go back to zero

Oh, and Hyber Beast Ryoho and Nagi with single button Beast Drive is absolute cancer. That is all.

Yeah I unfortunately have to agree with this sentiment of BR4 being the worst in the series even though it's also kind of nostalgic for me. I got into the Bloody Roar series pretty late with bloody Roar Primal Fury being my first BR game and it was a year before BR4 came out and when it came out, I got it within the first week of it's release. I loved BR;PF so much and I was super stoked for the 4th game and... I mean I was 14-15 at the time when the game came out and while I was initially excited to be playing it, that excitement waned down rather quickly as I played through it. I could tell that something was very off with the game compared to Primal Fury but I couldn't explain what that discomfort was. The game just felt like a downgrade in a lot of areas, it didn't feel as engaging. I felt like fights went by way too quickly, the force fields around the stages were tacky and made the environments feel horribly enclosed which killed the immersion of them compared to the previous game's stages, the dub voice acting while awkwardly hilarious was objectively terrible, and of course the terrible audio/voice syncing and sound mixing problems. The only new thing introduced that I liked was the evade system, it was just cool to look at lol. I do agree with your highlights of the game, namely the graphics. I agree that the game is a bit too dark in some areas but style wise, I think the game looks great and imo, it's one of the best looking PS2 games of that generation. It fits that perfect medium of a mixture of slightly realistic but still cartoony and you know, looks like a video game which is the kind of aesthetic that I love in video games. I was never into games trying to look super realistic so games on the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox will always be one of my most favorite art styles before developers started trying to make games look like live action movies after. I also think the music is decent. It's definitely the weakest in the series compared to the previous games but it's still a pretty okay soundtrack, I loved the themes for the Intro theme (Not as bombastic as BR2's but is still a beautiful melody), The Prison Tower, The Freezing Warehouse, and the Temple theme when you fight Ryoho's human form. So yeah, no real complaints from the soundtrack, it was diverse enough even though I do lean more towards hard rock and occasional techno style that the previous games centered around. Overall, it's such a shame that this game put the nail in the coffin for the series. It was a dud for sure when it comes to Bloody Roar but what long running series doesn't have at least one game that isn't as good? I feel like if they gave the series another chance, a 5th game would've righted the wrongs that the 4th game made and would be better for it. Anyway awesome review!

Actually, I agree with that: Bloody Roar 3 was great, and Extreme is the best game in the series, because game mechanics reached their climax. GameDevs ruined everything in BR4… But, new characters and arenas are awesome (even the Dragon). They could create a port of BR:PF for PS2 with characters and arenas from BR4. However, I have many ideas for Bloody Roar series reboot and I can share them.

i remember this is my favorite bloody roar and 3 also, bloody roar 4 gives me everything i need to complete my combos and just lets me be tight with my combos, nagi was hot and cool, reiji was cool, ryoho and dragon ryoho where fun and i knew how to beat them back then whether i lost or not, all the returning characters where buffed, its beast system gives all in and complete combos but you dont have to really risk everything you can still instant beast mode it out, beast mode was fun, i cant believe some didnt love it, its hella creative and beat its two gamecube entries by making more combos work even though those two where good, 3 and 4 where my favorite but next is primal fury. all bloody roar forever.

BR4 is what you get when you take what should be side characters and try to shoehorn them so hard into the spotlight, while making one just offbrand DOA Kasumi, reusing assets from old titles and adding in arbitrary invisible walls to old stages

at first, i enjoyed bloody roar 1&2 on arcade and i did bloody roar 4 on my friend's home. i thought this game is worst. i didnt accept hyperbeast and combinting health and beast guage. that was so sucks to me. but i contact with ex hyperbeast was so good and i know bloody roar 4 has a lot of problem. as see on this video. there are some characteristic that i can thanks to bloody roar 4. i hope to released bloody roar 5 or ex remake with good things.

I actually played this game and I had no problem with it... except for English Dub, not to mention you get a automatic game over if you lose to the final boss, also making both Long and Shina who are two of the several main characters, unlockable. I just got a mixed feeling towards it, I mean come on, guys! Hudson Soft/Konami just ruined a very good BR game. If only they can make it better like how they did in Primal Fury/Extreme...

bloody roar 4 is my favorite BR ,, but the Japanese version ,, not the American version .... japan version fixes a lot of things,, i like the career mode ,,i have fun customizing the characters move sets,, plus there are new moves and a third beast drive for the characters that are behind career mode..the game has blood too ,, there are a lot of good things about this game .. BR 4 is not for everyone but is for me ..

I was able to get this game at a retro game store for $70 and part of me is kind of regretting it somewhat but I thought the game was one of those classic gems that were hard to come by and I've had some difficulties getting though arcade mode but it's a meh game none the less
