Maintaining Eucalyptus on the Flower Farm 🌿

As an Australian I find your eucalyptus in the UK really fascinating! They are a great tree, but many varieties do get very tall, and they can randomly suddenly die for no apparent reason, or twist/snap off in the wind.... so don’t panic if the odd one is weird! Wherever you prune them is where they will send out a ball of new growth.... so your tree near the greenhouse might become a pom-poms of additional shade! Globulus is what we call a blue gum... they are used for forestry plantations in some of our very cool climates... so I would expect them to do well once they get going... they don’t usually need feeding specifically.... high nitrogen will, as usual, give you lots of sappy growth.... but that’s kind of what you want to harvest really! Take care... too much will kill them! they can have extensive root systems, so take care planting them in your beds.... they might be feeding off the nearby beds and impact growth there... they may be better out on the edge of your property a bit? And I agree, eucalyptus mulch is great for eucalypts.... and on paths... See if you can get ‘snow gums’.... they grow in our high country where it snows over winter.... and can survive hot summers... beautiful trees... maybe they would be a good option? I grow it as an annual, I live in a cold climate in the US. The trick is to start it indoors really early, like January. Then by late August/September you can cut nice long stems.

montreal canada.. i grow it as an annual... it get 4..5 feet tall but not thick... i simply dry it and use it in flower arrangements... i start it indoor in october... put in the garden in june... harvest in september..short season here

Always love to see a new video out from you!! First time growing eucalyptus this year for me. I am in Canada ...although we are in the Sunparlour of Canada some may say..I live at the Southern most tip of mainland Canada. I am pretty sure I can only grow eucalyptus as an annual here. I have 12 going in 4 inch pots that I started in January. I am planning to keep 4 of the best ones in larger pots to attempt to over winter them inside. The others I am planting them out in the field at the end of May or early June. Wish me luck! :)

I grow eucalyptus as an annual in the US zone 7, but I'm trying to grow it like a perennial like you do! I'm growing some trees out to hopefully coppice in a few years. It seems like your coppiced tress put on so much nice foliage, and not having to fuss with seedlings to pot up would be amazing!

I am in 7b/8a in south Carolina. I successfully overwintered all of mine! I did a frost cloth and an old blanket and it was fine! Good luck to you. 🙂

I accidentally ordered 5 baby blues and did not realize how big they get. My bad. But I really want a hedge. Keep them at 4 to 5 feet for screening. Is it possible to keep them this small? Or I will need to give them away.

Hi Sarah, I've just found your channel and enjoyed this video. I saved sone seed from two varieties of Eucalyptus and I have a few trees which are ready for chopping back. They all seem to be healthy enough and i keep hoping they don't die off because one year I had a larger one just die in the field so I wonder if it was too harsh a winter that year. I'm pleased you are thriving in your business, it's admirable what you are achieving.

Love to hear an update on how your Eucalyptus seeding did during the year. I started mine in January, indoors on heat and under grow lights. They were so slow to germinate, and get going. We are now at the beginning of May and the largest is only another 3cm, most a lot smaller. I’ve never had anything so slow growing. Would be grateful for any tips to get them going. Thanks

Be careful with gums next to your glass house. They are prone to dropping branches and falling over in the wind. So keep it small. As an Australian I like gums (eucalyptus) but out in the bush. I don’t like them in a garden as you stated nothing grows near them, it’s even hard to get a lawn to grow under them. Also they are the messiest trees with the leaves taking forever to breakdown.

I am also growing euc from seed this year, hoping they survive! I think using them as annuals it is a climate thing, hardy eucalyptus come from Tasmania and southern NSW in Australia, and our sun is a lot stronger than the U.K. even in the south of the country.

Hi Sarah, I’ve followed your videos and subscribed a long time ago. I’m starting my second year of flower farming but this year I bought new land. So, I still feel like a new flower farmer! I’ve been researching eucalyptus care everywhere I can find information! I ordered plugs early and I’ll have too many as they will arrive in a 210 plug trays. Today I researched to figure out which hardiness grow zone that you live in and found it to be zone 9. I live in zone 8 and a few years back we experienced an unusual ice storm that killed several of my amazing trees. So, I’m working on making good plans for the arrival of my eucalyptus plugs in early May! Any suggestions from anyone? I think I’ll need to sell approximately 100 silver dollar & 100 of the other type. But I’m definitely not a nursery. I’m only a flower farmer in the northeast corner of Texas. At this point, I think I’ll overwinter mine in a somewhat low tunnel of 5 feet and heavily mulch with straw. But I’m nervous about so many plugs arriving at one time because I have another part time job. I’m looking for any advice or tips! ❤ I always love your videos! 😊

I love eucalyptus and recently bought two which i planted directly into the ground. I live in Florida which is supposed to be good for the tree. However, my plants has completely dried 😢. What can i do to revive it? Can you do a video on how you replant yours? Thank you.

Since you don't recommend putting eucalyptus shavings or chip in flower beds due to it possibly hindering other plants' growth. So in turn would eucalyptus be effective for weed control and used as a natural alternative for plastic mulch/weedblock . I ask because I'm currently battling crab grass on my second year U-Pick flower farm in California. I want something in the walking paths that is visually appealing over dirt. Ideally I'd like to direct sow a ground cover that would suppress weeds and grass but can handle heavy traffic Do you have any suggestions?

We do get freezing temps, I don’t know the stats but we probably don’t go down below minus 5 or 10 for a few days a year.
