@@tonyb313 depends if academic or practically speaking. Practically for an investor it should be viewed as the opportunity cost of putting that capital to work here as opposed to elsewhere. Academically, if you’re in the US, you determine the capital structure and the cost of debt vs equity to get a discount rate. The CAPM and WACC formulas. Typical benchmark references in calcs are US 10 year yield and S&P500.

But clearly, it appears to make his present value analogy bulletproof. But I’ve never heard anyone else model it that way.

There are better technologies in crypto and blockchains that consume practically nothing in energy compared to Bitcoin. The irony is that you are clinging on the first in crypto. While Gold is money, its ultimate value is as an insurance policy for when the sovereign debt of countries like the US collapses. Gold as an investment is subject to the vagaries of the dollar, the manipulation by likes of JPM and GS working with governments to keep prices down. The price of Gold can be seen in terms of its insurance value, more formally in the Southern American countries, Argentina, Venezuela and the like. When US sovereign debt fails the price of Gold and BTC will reach prices few if anyone can pay. Paper gold will be useless as will be fiat. Who would be willing to dump their insurance policy after the house has burned to the ground. BTC has other uses as stated by Ark and others.
