Lots to unpack with a long history behind it, and lots of broken promises by political gov at national, provincial & local level. 1. Under apartheid, black people were given land in rural SA with most "white" people living in cities... where the jobs are. Black SAs have a long history of migrating to cities to earn a living & supporting family back home. Here grandparents raise the grandchildren. 2. While this is starting to change (global urbanisation trends) many Black SAs prefer to live as cheaply as possible as who can afford to purchase & run 2 homes? They also want to send as much money home as possible, and wages are very low in SA. 3. SA has many immigrants from around Africa - they also work in SA to support family at home and very few people can afford to purchase & run 2 homes. 4. When apartheid collapsed, the ANC promised to build all Black SAs a house but this did not materialize for many reasons incl. corruption. 5. Housing is the jurisdiction of national gov who allocate land & conduct social housing projects. Social housing is often of poor quality far from job centres, with few amenities & urban services (essentially little boxes on a hillside far from anything). However I am always amazed that there is always land available for retirement homes for rich people. 6. And yes, apartheid urban planning sought to separate the poor (mostly black) from middle & high income suburbs. But then that is true in many parts of the world (eg red lining in the usa). 5. Housing - as in many parts of the world - is a major issue with fewer & fewer people being able to afford a home of their own. 6. Under apartheid White SA were able to amass generational wealth, but Black SAs are beginning to catch up. However wages & salaries have not kept pace with inflation and many people, even those with jobs, are struggling to find affordable housing (buy or rent). This is a global issue. 7. SA cities are sprawling and public transit is sporadic & doesn't service all areas. SAs that live in suburbs have to own a car to go anywhere (it's also very unsafe to walk or cycle) - this is very expensive, adding pressure to shrinking budgets. 8. Creating compact, integrated, inclusive, safe, sustainable, affordable, gender sensitive, child friendly, resilient, climate ready, beautiful cities requires strategic & purposeful planning, development & management. SA cities are crumbling & decaying, even the rich areas, due to neglect & bad governance. 9. 80 - 90% of people will live in cities by 2050 with the highest rates of urbanisation occurring in developing countries. There are ways to provide social housing while densifying cities, but I don't think our politicians are particularly interested - want to amass power & influence for themselves, families & cronies (as in other parts of the world eg usa, uk etc). 10. Crime & corruption is having a devastating impact on our enviro, economy, socio-cultural systems awa our quality of life - for everybody. But it's usually the poor & vulnerable who are affected first & hardest. The hope was that the new SA gov would create a great SA for ALL SAs, but state capture has set progress back decades. Hope is fading.

The black middle class is larger than the entire white population, and the black upper class is bigger than the white middle or upper class. You will find that most of those nice suburbs bordering on townships are predominately black, because of white flight. There are a few white squatter camps, but of course the townships are predominantly black. The policies that were designed for the 'previously-disadvantaged' are not benefiting the currently-disadvantaged, but only the rich black elite. That is why not much has changed. If the policies were aimed at anyone (irrespective of race) with a poor socioeconomic status, you would start to see a change, but the ANC has no interest in creating competition for themselves.

SA has a way bigger problem than just the terrible urban planning.
@jabulanithema14678 ай бұрын
Informal settlements are not Townships. Townships are formal and approved. Some people move from rural areas and establish informal settlements, just like in USA where people who don't afford rental live in the street. It doesn't matter how many house are built by government. Beneficiaries rent them out to migrant labors from other Provinces and African countries, and they move on to occupy land and create more informal settlement. Some has nice houses in rural areas.

Same as in the US, the segregation is officially gone, but it's so baked into the system it's gonna take decades more to get rid of it all.
@thato5968 ай бұрын
South Africa is in this mess because of apartheid. anc did not kill and steal land and forced people into poverty and informal settlements and paid low salaries. The responsibility of anc party because they are in government is to fix the injustices of colonisation/apartheid. But the fixing will not be simple

@kwameadoko95428 ай бұрын
It's challenging to break this cycle of segregation. Because white people wanted the opportunities available to black people but did not want to live with them, black communities began forming around white areas. This scenario is prevalent in many South African cities and townships, making it difficult to address.

IMO, 30 years is a relatively short time from "independence". That is, it takes most countries much, much longer to learn from their mistakes and implement the right policies. The problem, however, is political instability. These initial policy mistakes may lead to a distrust of any government solution. Also, India is a good example of what I'm referring to. 30 years after independence, it was still very much learning of how to run the country. Most news reports of India, in the 70s and 80s, were about how dysfunctional the country was. Now, 76 years after independence, a majority of Indians say the country is on the right track; and there are infrastructure projects which would have been difficult to imagine 30 years after independence, such as replacing the slum dwellings in most cities with housing, schools, and other infrastructure. But -- my point -- India's policy mistakes during its first decades of independence didn't lead to a fall of democracy or a series of coups. This may have been the key of why India was able to experiment with many policy models and politicians before it found one that could help its economy grow and slowly lift itself out of poverty.

Exactly. One thing India focused during the first decades was to acquire food security. Then they venture in to pharmaceuticals and made it secure. After liberalistaion it was a steady growth, now becoming the fidth largest economy. Soon to become third by 2027- IMF report. Currently the fastest growing economy. Ofcourse poverty still exists, but they are improving at a fast rate. For eg. recently India eradicated extreme poverty in the country. Now the nation is building incredible infra. Hope INDIA and SA cooperate more. For a better future. 🍃

The current spatial planning setup is terrible, leading to poor integration in our communities. It seems like the ANC government hasn't really fixed these issues and some party members living in these areas raise questions about their commitment to improving conditions in the townships. With the elections coming up on May 29th, it's important to think carefully about who to vote for. Many people feel that the ANC's promises don't match reality. Some suggest voting for ActionSA, BOSA or DA , hoping for young, energetic leaders who can bring positive change for everyone.
