Washington gathered to pay tribute to Jimmy Carter on Thursday, bringing together political rivals in the wake of a rancorous election to honor a former president praised by both parties for his humility and decency.
President Joe Biden to delivered a eulogy for America's 39th president at the Washington National Cathedral on a national day of mourning and designated federal holiday that saw US equity markets closed.
Carter was a former Georgia peanut farmer who as US president brokered a historic and lasting peace accord between Israel and Egypt in a single term marred by soaring inflation, an oil shortage and Iran’s holding of American hostages. He remained in the spotlight for his extensive humanitarian work after leaving office, particularly with Habitat for Humanity, and foreign-election monitoring through the Carter Center. He was the longest-lived president in US history and the first to reach the age of 100.
