Make the corporate board sit in the same buildings as the engineers in Washington.

the former precisely wants to avoid this at all cost. They (the board) decided to do the way it is now in order to be able to focus on finances and increase the stock value. They didn't care about the engineering.

Cost pressures for efficiency are from customers and competition. The failure to properly provide safety systems and redundancy for engineering decisions supporting the efficiency goals are on Boeing management. Spinning off a piece of Spirit AeroSystems was a purely stock value move. However, it reduced oversight capability (and culpability) and that reduced safety. Capitalism works, but capitalism without counterbalance is deadly in many different ways. As we have started seeing in the US over the last ~20yrs.

I also heard that Calhoun said the next clean sheet design won't start until 2030. That means it may not enter service until 2040.
