Doing the right thing (paying your own way) is never appreciated. Who would you hire: The person who put themselves through school by working several jobs or someone who got to go for free or are in debt up to their eyeballs? Which one is going to show up on time everyday and already has a good work ethic? I'm not dissing charity, but maybe it should not be given indiscriminately. In the end, it's this guy's money and he should do with it whatever he wants.

Very generous offer. I can't help but think about the kids in the audience who worked 2-3 jobs and their parents sold their houses to help graduate debt free. Those industrious, hard working folks got no prize. Only the people who took on massive debt win the "prize". Kind of messed up if you look at it that way. All the parents who saved for 20 years and spent tens of thousands of dollars did it all wrong. Not preparing paid off BIG in this case.

“Where you live shouldn’t determine whether you get educated. Where you go to school shouldn’t determine whether you get textbooks,” Smith said. “The opportunity you access should be determined by the fierceness of your intellect, the courage in your creativity and the grit that allows you to overcome expectations that weren’t set high enough.” Unfortunately if you are in high school and the curriculum is so low that your fellow classmates still don't know how to read, your teachers are trying to teach your classmates what a 'verb' is and consumer math ( basic addition and subtraction) is all that is required to graduate, it does. At such a young age you can not move to a city with a higher accredited school and make a path. You are subject to the opportunities or lack there of afforded to your parents. When you do graduate, colleges will look at your lowly accredited school, and deny you believing your diploma isn't worth the paper it was printed on. Even colleges will pass people unworthy so they can have a high graduate turn out rate. It is all about numbers. Unfortunately it is the world we live in. They did use the word 'SHOULD' I know it hurts. That money was more than likely wasted on at least 30 people.

Americans really don’t realize how far behind we seem to most other developed countries where college is either free or really inexpensive. People (Republicans) are really arguing that someone should have to work hard to pay off loans and don’t realize the global ramifications the astronomically high student loan debt has and how we look to the world. Which really the student loan system is a vulture anyway. I don’t know any bank or loan business that would give a $50,000 loan every semester or year to an 18 year old with no credit history yet that’s exactly how the system works.

Why are they obligated? People who are rich actually benefit other people because they are providing a good or service that people find valuable. In order to make money, one has to be providing something of value, otherwise no one would be purchasing it. In a free market, being rich typically indicates that you have provided society something that they have benefitted from because that is what typically happens in trade in the market: both sides usually gain from it (it's not a zero-sum game). So when people say billionaires are bad people, my response is not necessarily; they have provided society with something and are rewarded for it. Also, college students who have debt have chosen to take that course; they have only themselves to blame for the accumulation of debt.
@_rob_.
@_rob_. 5 жыл бұрын
@@robsmith961 .... no one here has said billionaires are "obligated". The OP just stated a "wish" that they would. And "I"...wish they would also.👍 It's called hope Mr. Vogel. Seriously dude?.... take a step back and look at that statement and meditate on what you just typed. Why would you wish that college students have no skin in the game? The rest of their lives won't be this way, why should college? What is their motivation to finish college, or to finish in a timely manner? There is something to be said for developing the discipline and motivation required to pay for a college education, whether through scholarships or working. This is not a good life lesson to be teaching young people.

@@kevindavis5966 .... 1) Their "skin in the game" is their commitment, willingness, and work to attending college and graduating with an informed mind. It's NOT...just money. 2) I refer you back to the answer I gave to your first question.👍 3) A better life. To be part of making a better world, a better country. To honor those who sacrificed before them, who made it possible for them to do it. To advance the opportunity for those who come after them. To BE...an example of possibility. Seriously....the answer to number 3 can go on, and on, and on. You can't seriously think student debt is the motivator?? ((can you?)) 🤔 Now..to address your closing statements.... Seriously dude...this right here is about as GREAT a life lesson as these kids could get...right here. BE SOMEBODY, AND DO GOOD, PAY IT FORWARD. THAT...is one hell of a life lesson right there. Anywhooo.... I hope all your questions were answered to your better understanding of WHAT JUST HAPPENED HERE!!???? 🤚😎👍

I was wondering why the students didn’t seem more elated, then I realized they had no intention of paying the loans back anyway.

Why is it that all the well off students are getting their student loans paid, when they are well capable of paying them, while the average college student is drowning in debt.
@turnthepage867

Because average men don't attend Morehouse. Only excellent students with supportive families make it through the house. That's how it is. Black privilege! I love it. If only Dr. King and Julian Bond were alive to see this day.☺

I'd love to see the details behind this gesture. He said he'd give a "grant". That implies the money would go to the school... and therefore be a huge tax deduction. No hate...I'm just being a contrarian and wondering the details of what he's doing.

@Almighty God George Soros #420 #GetRekd If the end result is that these students aren't in debt, then it DOES help. Ask one of the students that this benefits if they care if someone gets a tax deduction as a result of this, they'd have to be extremely stupid to complain about not having to pay their own debt.

@David Walker I agree. I feel like people without means expect those with means to simply offer themselves up and allow themselves to lose everything for everyone else's benefit. You can give back to people and communities without putting yourself in a financial ditch. If you can figure out HOW to to do both, why shouldn't you? How is the end result any different because the Billionaire can also use this act of kindness to his own benefit? Because one thing he could also do is NOT help these people at all and keep his money. If people are going to complain regardless, maybe they don't deserve any assistance. I'm sure these kids are EXTREMELY grateful. The hole they're being pulled out of as a result of this is enormous.

@Almighty God George Soros #420 #GetRekdI was working on another response to you, but I have to reply to this one simply because of how absurd it is. HOW THE HELL ARE YOU COMPARING THIS TO SLAVERY?! Your analogy makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. The only way it would even be comparable is if this man personally MADE these students go to school, and personally held their student loan debt in his HAND. He didn't ask or tell any of these students to attend college, that was THEIR decision, and now he's paying off debt that they accrued as a result of THEIR decision. How the hell do you pull slavery out of that? I'm not even sure if you know what you're talking about anymore. I'm convinced you're trolling at this point, because if that was a serious comparison everyone else that agreed with you needs to reassess their viewpoints. This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read.
