Just listened to Neddy and Millar's podcast (Never Strays Far) on the Boulting book "1923" (published 22/6/23) and it sounds terrific. This is the footage of the 1923 Tour de France stage (Brest›Les Sables d'Olonne 412km) which sparked the book. Sounds fascinating - not just a cycling book but by the sounds of it an account of the state of Europe in 1923 politically, culturally and cyclistically - that's a word - an exploration of the post First World War Lost Generation and a reflection on how the Covid pandemic parallels the Spanish influenza epidemic of the early C20th. Have to say this kind of thing sounds right up my Strasse innit

Hopefully picking up a copy tomorrow, the podcast was a great teaser for what I’m sure is going to be a great read
Thank you so much for including the link to this fascinating little film. It captures the history and intensity and captivating quality of this brilliant race. I watched it scene by scene as set out in the book and it brought it to vivid life. Chapeau!

Just finished the book. Really enjoyed it. So clever in how Ned has put it together using just the film as his starting point. World history, local history and cycling history all linking back to one rider. Definitely going to try and attend one of Neds one man shows if any are due ?

Wonderful book and the film itself is amazing. I had the pleasure of seeing Ned at the Edinburgh Book Festival discussing the film and book with cyclist Emily Chapman - a memorable hour!

I'm a few chapters into the book. First heard Boulting talk about it on the Rouleur podcast. Fascinating stuff. These riders were some hard men!

Brilliant, microscopic research in the style of Professor David Olusoga. A fascinating study of life 100 years ago.

Just listening to "1923 the mystery of lot212...." . So pleased the film was shared, and I can really understand the obsession, how did those guys do that mileage on those machines?!

It was Henri Pélissier that showed that he took cocaine "for the eyes," chloroform "for our gums" liniment for the legs and an assortment of pills that meant they could "keep going on dynamite."
